I don't often have to wear a suit. Weddings, funerals and the odd interview, but I'm after a new suit. I'm not after bespoke as I don't wear them enough, hopefully some of you do and can advise.

I've got grey suit from M&S in size 42R I'm now a size 40R can it be altered? If yes does anyone know a good tailor near Cambridge?

Waistcoats, as a wedding guest would you avoid wearing one, leaving that for the groom, best man etc? I've found two suits I like in John Lewis one can be bought with a waistcoat, the one I prefer cannot.

What's everyones favourite colour combos? I have both black and brown shoes.

Thanks for any help.

Shop wise, I like Slaters for no other reason than they do free alterations which for tall, thin, long legged me is very useful indeed. The guys there will measure you up properly and make sure the suit fits as well as possible.

Waist coat is optional, I wear them occasionally and have worn them for weddings, they look good if they fit well.

Colours, navy and dark blue are the most versatile and look best in my opinion. Can be worn with any colour of shoe, black looks smartest, tan or oxblood look good if a little more casual.

You can have a suit altered but they can end up looking a bit 'wrong' if too much fabric is cut/adjusted and the price can get high. At a 2 inch change I'd suggest a new suit.. A nice upscale of an off the peg suit is to buy the best fitting one then go to a tailor for fine adjustments.

If you're a bit tubby then double breasted otherwise single breasted with 2 or 3 buttons for classic good looks. Remember 're buttons donut the top of 2 or the middle of 3... #sartorial!

That was my other question, so the suit is single breasted with 2 buttons. Why the **** do you undo the bottom button? Why does it even exist if this is the rule? Fashion really is an odd industry.

Just rules, 2 button suit, only the top is done up. With waistcoats, you never do the bottom button up.

Oh, and whatever colour shoes you wear, make sure your belt matches them.

Crombie - not Abercrombie & Fitch - do good quality off the peg, certainly better than M&S or JL.
Link to their summer sale suit page https://www.crombie.co.uk/suits.html

You could also check out Duchamp - their summer sale is also on.

You haven't indicated your budget - generally there is a correlation between price and quality.

The jacket chest is the one bit of a suit you can't really alter much, treat yourself to a new one, crombie is a good shout as are Slater's but their choice can be random depending on what they've bought (line ends etc). I for one from French connection and it was fine, it's all about the jacket, try on loads until you find one that fits

If you want to wear a 3piece then go ahead but not plain grey because then you will look too much like the groom. Thread.com is good for tips on this stuff.

I wear a suit about once every 15 years or so. I get mine from the charity shop.

I wouldn't bother with alterations either, keep the 42R in case you eat too many pies in future. As for where to buy, I mostly just wait for a decent sale at House of Fraser, although there's some good offers in the current John Lewis sale to. I've never bothered with a waistcoat myself and def single breasted.

Echo the messages above about getting it altered - especially if the canvas is bonded rather than stitched as most are these days.

Just buy a new suit and revel in the fact you're a size smaller - though with vanity sizing these days, are you sure it doesn't fit?

last suit i bought (had a couple of weddings in close succession and an ill fitting suit shoved in the wardrobe) came from M and M direct. They are a big discount place and i got a Ben Sherman suit for about 90 quid that everyone says looks really nice. Apparently the RRP for it was 350.
