Pigface - MemberOh dear God, some people liked Suicide Squad some don't like it,
Everyone likes different stuff, what are we bickering about?
Welcome to the internet.
It's entirely possible to make a blockbuster about superheroes that is smart and treats the audience as smart [or at least doesn't offer them idiot-grade content].
You better start looking for a producer then, cos Hollywood hasn't managed it yet!
Deadpool came closest, but that was down to dialogue not plot.
The Guardian thinks we're all sexist pigs, so it's a mute point really whether the plot, dialogue etc is any good.

Mute point, is that like a ... Etc
Pigfacejimjam you are a bit of a tool really aren't you.
Why so butthurt?
Hey just my opinion, its the internet right

Jimjam is the answer.
@ boingo - it's a "moot" point
@ dez - "Nolan" mean anything to ya? Bourne is basically a superhero as well. What about Guardians of the Galaxy...?

Yeah well if you resort to personal insults at the drop of hat when people are debating how to critique pop culture you maybe should stay off it. The internet that it.
Watched it yesterday, it could have been better but then again it could have been a whole lot worse. It's a little confused in places but there were plenty of laughs (mostly intentional) that saw me comfortably through to the end. Margot Robbie got the tone of her performance spot on, Will Smith was not far behind and Ben Affleck does his usual 'chubby bloke on tranquillisers' thing. Not bad but definitely not Marvel either! 🙂
Now who is butthurtt (what does that even mean?) you have been having snidey goes at anyone who seems to like films you don't or you think are bad films.
Pop culture????? critique???? Are you a media studies student?
*is 😛

Such a beacon of diplomacy
So, for the mentally dull, what I'm trying to say is that cine-literate people can make educated guesses and, as it turns out, be correct. Shocker.
But i do agree with you
But, yes I'm just some creepy weirdo
@ boingo - it's a "moot" point
No, it's mute point. Man, this thread is turning into a right damp squid.

Jimjam, you are to cinema what Surfmatt was to motoring.
Please let me know what I should be watching this year at the cinema with my hard earned money and valuable free time.
What about Guardians of the Galaxy...?
Was a huge surprise.

I can do that: Good films

The point I was making was that films based on comic books need not be bad. And that being based on comic books doesn't excuse a bad film.
I don't see why that's controversial.
To be so divisive Suicide Squad must have something going for it!
No idea what that is ^^ , but I want to see it! 😆

If you just want to look at pretty ladies, just hit up Pornhub. I guarantee it'll have a better plot.
Nah, it's the cinematography I go for.
DezBNo idea what that is ^^ , but I want to see it!
It's every bit as good as Suicide Squad.
I bet £5 jimjam hasn't seen either, why would he waste his money on bad films?
jimjam - MemberIt's every bit as good as Suicide Squad.
IM not sure suicide squad will be that bad !
sucker punch was ok but quite flawed really

Do you want to just send me that £5 via paypal 🙂 ?
Kick Ass is pretty damn close to a properly smart superhero film, and also just a good film. Vaughan is IMO one of the best directors of action scenes around at the minute, and is not too shabby at character and narrative either.
Scott Pilgrim vs The World I think is basically a superhero film, and is quite probably a bona fide classic film full stop even if hardly anyone has seen it.
Would quite like to see Tarantino take on the superhero genre.

Yup, Scott Pilgrim vs the World is a very entertaining film. Based on a comic book as it happens. As was Kick Ass. So was Batman Begins and the Dark Knight Rises, Dredd, The Kingsman, 30 Days of Night, Old Boy, Road to Perdition, History of Violence, Blade.....
Thanks for all the extra background info there.

Just randomly in the street like some sort of theatre?
"Oi, Mate! Can I interest you in a discussion on semiotics in Russian soap operas?"
😆
Now there's an idea...
I'm yet to see the film, but...
Surely it works in the favour of the studio to not keep releasing crap. The Joel Schumacher batman films almost killed the comic book genre and certainly delayed batman's return to the big screen it was only when Warner took a chance with letting Nolan have creative control that they became a success. They're now quickly eroding that Goodwill by letting Zach synder play at film making and releasing poor quality films.
Kick Ass is pretty damn close to a properly smart superhero film
Has anyone mentioned The Incredibles? Took the piss ahem, I mean parodied every super hero cliche in the book, then along came a load of films using those cliches seriously. "You caught me monologuing again!" Genius.
I guess the problem is Nolan, or any other non-hack directors, don't want to keep pinging out a superhero film every year. Especially if the script/screenplay is pants.
But the studio want to keep the gravy train going, so they get [s]hack[/s] Zack Synder onboard, who is more than happy to put explosions/money before artistic integrity.
Then when it's starting to show a tank at the box office, because even monsters like Dez and Craig* have had enough of turning their brains off for a couple of hours on a Friday night, they get someone decent in.
...and repeat.

but only one of them has Mary Elizabeth Winstead
Some people just epitomise the phrase "get a life".
"super" film, really good
I saw it. I was entertained. I win.
Good, wasnt it? Just nice to see a superhero film without Robert Downey Jr in it.
Or Chris Evans..
I just watched the extended version on bluray
even the soundtrack couldnt save it
yeah it was obvious that there was another film made before and then incorporated into the flashbacks
a few glimpses of an alright film, but even as superhero films go, it just didnt live up to its potential
It was a mess
Weird thread. I posted loads on it and don't remember it at all. Someone hijacked my account.
Lego Batman was crap btw.
I got it for Christmas and enjoyed it! Harley Quinn stole the show 😉
It did go a bit weird when they all started getting the bad lass but still worth a watch imo.
Finally saw it myself, I actually really enjoyed it. It suffered from the recutting and a bit too much of the plot just didn't make sense (OK, I appreciate it's a daft superhero action film, but you've got to remain in tune to your own bullshit, and it sometimes didn't). But still, I thought it succeeded at what it set out to do.
(no idea what differences there were between my version and the cinema release though)
I got the film free from Sky at Christmas. It was terrible, and generally I like superhero type films.
Disjointed nonsense.
Good film, I thought. Not gonna change the World, but a good film nonethelesss
But that birds ass though...
A really bad film, I wanted to like it and there was a good film in there just very poorly put together. In the way that marvel gave us the avengers one at a time before they got together the film spent way too long trying to remind us why we should care about them while delivering a lame comic book meal game villan plot over the top.
Some of the characters existed elsewhere first and needed to live there for a bit.
Dc seems to just be off in the films a bit, batman vs superman was the same plan as captain America civil war but in that case we had been with them for longer so actually gave a shit about them.
The justice league setup (or whatever it was) in suicide squad was strange and put of place, all a but trying too hard.
I started watching it on a flight, didn't make any sense, gave up pretty quickly.
I enjoyed but the editing was a mess, to it had much more potential.
