...without GoreTex and similar liners.

They seem few and far between these days.

Zamberlan Vioz.

Full leather 3/4 season boot. I've not tried them out in winter or with a crampon. Otherwise great. Read the reviews.

alt-berg +1
hand made in Yorkshire, in 5 widths or a custome fit.

As comfy as a pair of slippers 🙂

but yes, they have a waterproof membrane.

I've had Meindl Burma's too

Great boots, just could never get them to fit right on my narrow feet

Aren't Brasher Hillmasters the default choice?

Mine are 5 or 6 yr old and perfect for the UK.

I have some Alt-Berg boots for work when I was in uniform and they are superb, but they are a bit OTT as walking boots. All their walking boots seem to have sympathetic linings now.

GO Outdoors have Meindl Borneo for £99 down from £185, which has to be worth a look. I assume GO Outdoors are cheap simply from buying in bulk, not seconds or something like that?

I have some other B2 boots so crampons not a factor, but as you'd expect they're a little too stiff for general walking.

Scarps for me and the wife. But the best answer is an expensive pair that fit your feet.

Zamberlan Vioz, these were my first ever serious walking boot, I dont have any experience of any other but nevertheless would highly recommend them.

All the Brasher and all the Vioz boots are GoreTex 🙁

Seems there is Scarpa Ranger, Scarpa SL, Meindl Borneo without membrane liners, and I've emailed Alt-Berg to see if they do any without, although that may mean custom = £££££

Meindl Burma has gore TeX. Borneo is what you want for calf leather inside.

The Scarpa SL Activ are great boots, stiff, well made but a bit heavy. Great for walking over rocky terrain doing munros and similar hills, will be fine with snow and ice using proper walking crampons. Waterproof if you keep up with treatment. I have crossed burns and small rivers wearing them with no problems. You wouldn't want to wear them any length of time walking miles along tarmac roads though.

The Scarpa Ranger is also a well made boot, but much lighter not as suitable for rocky and rougher terrain. A more flexible sole. Will struggle on snow and ice on slopes as they won't take proper crampons. Much better overall though for mixed walking and work well with microspikes for low level walking when icy.

For what it's worth I own a pair of both to cover all my walking and tried on probably every model of walking boots available across all my local retailers before deciding on them. They only way to buy boots IMHO.

Well, popped into Cotswolds this afternoon, and came away with a pair of Meindl Borneo's, and very nice they are too. Especially when they knocked off £85 to match GO Outdoors' clearance offer!

My Brasher boots don't have a seperate inner sock/layer? What is it about goretex that puts you off?

It's hotter and sweatier. Appreciate that not everyone will find it so, but I notice a difference between my non-membrane Alt-Berg work boots and GoreTex lined recently deceased Zamberlan boots, and prefer the former, hence the wish to avoid it.

Personally I find they don't breathe well enough and I get very sweaty feet. Hence my boots don't have GTX lining.

GTX lining can take an age to dry out as well.

Gotta be Scarpa SL. The clever one piece of leather for the whole boot, so there is no leaky tongue.

I was after the same thing, purely because they dry a damn sight quicker than soaked GoreTex lined boots.

I can't remember the model it was, but a pair of Meindl's looked good until I found they did not do sizes above a 12 in them.

As people have said, maybe consider a pair of Lowas or Alt-bergs without the GTX lining. If I don't get the new issue boots soon, I'll probably spring for a pair of one or other of those to replace my ruined issue boots. That way at least my feet will be taken care of before my next trip to Brecon.

I have Meindl Vakuum GTX which are Goretex lined so not what you're looking for although I've never had any problems with them not drying out or hot to wear. To be honest the leather doesn't get that wet as it repels water which I'm assuming is some kind of nano waterproofing. They are a very comfy, supportive boot without being too heavy.
I've not tried the Meindl Borneo but if they are anything like the Vakuum then you'll be pleased.
