I'm feeling a bit sorry for myself having just seen my phone's screen gain a big green vertical line up the whole screen. Time for a new phone I think.

I am a Sony fan and want to stick with them. Currently using an Xperia 5ii. Looking for something similar in spec or better. I prefer refurbished phones to new as I get more bang per buck. I'm not after the latest coolest thing but want something nice. I want to buy outright too.

Price point about £350.

Any ideas for me? Cheers 🙂

Probably not the advice you want if you are a fan but I'd avoid them altogether. It's the only phone I've ever had fail and that was only after a few weeks. All other phones have lasted a few years. Also their warranty was terrible. Had to raise an issue through PayPal in the end. A friend also had one fail in a similar manner. Much better phones at a much lower price point out there. I'd never have another.

Must be able to find a 1 IV for that kind of money? I got a the next model on, a 1 V, new on ebay at the start of the year for half price. Pretty happy with it, certainly the best battery life and screen I've used. Came from a iPhone that turned out not to be as waterproof as it should. The flagship Google and Samsung phones are huge and heavy which I'm not that keen on. Plus I do like Sony.

I've had a few Xperia devices and they have all been very good...battery life has been brilliant on them all. I'm on a Pixel 6 for the last 2.5 years and it has also been very good. When I was looking to change the Xperia offerings weren't appealing so went for the Pixel. I'm likely to change in the next 5 months and looking at Pixels, but likely to check Sony offerings then a well.

I really really really miss my old Xperia..... Fitted in one hand. Small. Not obnoxious. Good battery life. Decent camera.

I've still got it, but nothing works on it.

Current Xperia offering is slim but too long for one handed use.

Xperia5iv arrives tomorrow. I paid more than I wanted to but I'm going to trade in a bunch of old phones. to (slightly) defray the cost.

I too really liked the couple of Sony phones I had.

Google are offering enormous trade-in prices at the moment (roughly 2x what I paid new), plus it stacks with other discount codes.

Hmm, they're offering 2-3x more than my last Xperia is worth now. I imagine once it's in the hands of the trade-in company they will try to whittle the offer down for whatever they can find under a microscope

Just for amusement I put my Xperia 1V details in to get a iphone 16 trade-in price last month. Entering a Samsung/Google at least got a derisory offer. Anything Sony "Good news...your device is ready for recycling" Blinking Apple pisstakers!

TBH, even if I get zilch for my old devices I'm going to consider it a bit of a win.

#1- return useful elements to the system, reducing a tiny amount of environmental damage.

#2- removal of degrading batteries from home that might possibly be a risk.

#3- free up some space in my ridiculously cluttered kitchen drawer.

Mrs Smiffy and I have had a few Sony Experia phones over the last 10 years and found them bullet-proof, weatherproof and idiot proof.

You just can't get a Quadlock for them!
