Good analysis by Andrew Rawnsley in todays Observer on Sunaks weakness and his crazy decision to give her the job in the first place

Rishi Sunak must surely sack his recklessly irresponsible and incendiary home secretary

I especially love the quote:

he has retained her in the cabinet on the Lyndon Johnson principle that it was better to have her “inside the tent pissing out than outside the tent pissing in”. Mr Sunak must surely now see that she is inside the tent pissing all over him.

I like this quote binners:

Expressions of horror are also to be heard from some Conservative MPs that you’d associate with the traditional right of the party. One of their number, who once worked in the same government department as Ms Braverman, fumed to me that she is “too ****ing dangerous” to hold the most junior ministerial rank, never mind occupy a great office of state with such grave duties in so many sensitive areas.

Personally I think Braverman has totally blown her chances of becoming Tory leader as a result of what she has said in the last couple of weeks, not that I thought her chances were ever good.

She is now seen as totally divisive, even by those on the right who support her, they realise that she could never be the leader of the party.

I think this is where we disagree Ernesto. I shoved a bet on her being next Tory leader a few months ago at 9/1. I've just looked and she's now 5/1. The only person very slightly in front of her is Kemi Badanoch with Penny Mordaunt on the same odds

I think you're underestimating just how insane the average Tory member is and it's them who decide. They love all this shit! Homelessness as a lifestyle choice? Lefty pinko police? Terrorist glorifying protestors? Where do I sign?!!!

I reckon whether Rishi sacks her or not, she'll become increasingly unhinged until they lose the next election and then she'll stand as the 'we lost because we weren't right wing enough' candidate and absolutely walk a leadership election in the same way Truss did. They were mad enough to elect her and they're mad enough to elect Cruella

Meanwhile Sam Harris has continued his rants on islamophobia by characterising the march in London as being filled by hundreds of thousands marching in support of Hamas in his latest podcast.

Poor Sam, he's becoming ever more irrelevant with every utterance

I think Braverman has a good chance of being tory leader.  Remember the party has been taken over by the hard right and that the membership are hard right.  Zero chance of becomeing PM tho.  Fartoo toxic

Ernie could be right in that this could cause a return to earth for the tories in that they choose someone who actually has a clue where reality is but I doubt it.

I think even Johnson would've binned her off by now, just to gain a bit of credit for himself.

Ken Sunak is so out of his depth he can't even grasp a quick win in an open goal.

The Tories would have to be barking mad to put Braverman in No10

But then I never thought the Tories would be mad enough to elect Truss, assuming that ultimately the membership would see through her vacuous self promotion.....

Honestly I'm really divided as to if I want to see cruella as leader of the opposition.
On one hand it should see the tories destroyed for a while, but the flip side is that it gives her more of a voice

I think Braverman has a good chance of being tory leader.

We will see. I don't prescribe to the view that Tories are clueless and incompetent - the fact that they have been in power for most of the last 200 years suggests otherwise.

You don't become the most successful political party in the world without careful consideration of electoral strategy.

Like capitalism itself the Tories are constantly reinventing themselves and adapting to changing circumstances.

Elements in the right-wing of the Tory Party might well be wetting their pants over Braverman's evermore attention-seeking diatribe but there is no evidence that the Tory Party as a whole see her as an election winner. Which is why combined with her divisiveness she will possibly be sacked tomorrow.

After the next general election the Tories will in all likelihood be on their knees, they will need a leader who both appeals to the wider public and unites the party.

I can't imagine many of even her own supporters will see Braverman as a unity candidate after the last couple of weeks.

Liz Truss might have been a disaster for the Tories but she at least didn't go out of her way to deliberately piss off members of her own party. I believe that Braverman relishes in doing that.

As long as they’re no longer in power, I don’t give a flying **** what they do.

I do think they’ll disappear off to the real far right with either Cruella or Badanoch at the helm of HMS Nutjob

Aren’t the few voices of sanity left within the Tory party, those that Boris didn’t purge already, all standing down at the next election anyway? This leaves a rump of those in ultra safe seats and they’re all the headbangers

Whichever Tory party emerges from the projected electoral Armageddon will likely make UKIP look like the Lib Dems

Tories are in charge of the country's narrative despite how unhinged they may seem. Otherwise they wouldn't be so successful at being in power, and setting the economic landscape which is evidently crap but sticky enough for Labour to borrow from.

Thatcher was as mad as any of them in my opinion and a flat out liar.

They've always been deranged liars -the lot of them.

I am surprised at the lack of police presence in that ^^ clip.

I don't know what time that was but obviously Waterloo station. Victoria station was full of coppers at midday and in the evening full chock-a-block with Palestinian supporters. I can't see something like that happening.

I guess it was very early before the bulk of ceasefire supporters and police arrived.

I think the tory party might well either split or and head of further to the far right.

Despite what we think in our STW bubble, not all Tories are fascist headbangers, and a few I know are horrified how the last 5 years have played out, even the ones who thought Brexit was a good idea didn't really believe Boris could manage it successfully. Hopefully it will split and be divided long enough to give the next government a chance to make some important structural and societal changes.

I marshalled the village Remembrance Parade this morning and was approached at the barrier by a very Daily Mail Reader looking woman who said "I hope you don't have to deal with any Palestinians" to which I replied "It's usually just English folk annoyed that they can't get to the shop to buy their Mail on Sunday".

She didn't look happy with me.

It’s easy to mess with their minds when you tell them their beloved St George was a Roman from Turkey/Armenia (if he existed).

We only have that cross as a flag cos we paid Genoa for protection.

If you’re English then you’re descended from German/Danish invaders.

The 3 lions you proudly wear on the replica football shirt & sing about are  a symbol from French noble heraldry.

That's the problem, once you start heading to the far right, there is only one direction to go.

She would happily burn the country down to promote her own agenda to be Tory leader or PM. It wouldn't matter to her if she presided over a charred wasteland. In her head she still won.

This is sometimes that never got into politics to serve her country not even at a younger/more naive age, the plan was always for the country to serve her.

cabinet meeting Monday could be interesting. So, everyone have a good weekend? What you get up to? Anything interesting?

ideally it work be little Richie sitting at the table & Sue Ellen walks in, “Am I the first? Where’s everyone else?”

”ah, thing is Susie…”

but it won’t, more’s the pity

Watching Sky news this morning their own poll put Braverman at a 72% positive rating amongst people who´re Tory supporters, in 2nd and 3rd place were Kemi Badneoch and James Cleverly at 40% and 30% (ish) positive. Sunak´s rating was something like 13% (might now have that actual  number but it was around that)

if they lose the rwanda decision, i could see braverman leading the charge to pull us out of the ECHR

She will lose it and she’ll then go full ‘enemies of the people’ not just against the ECHR but the entire legal establishment. She thinks as Home Secretary/de facto PM she should be able to dictate law by decree and she’s massively pissed off that she can’t. She will do everything in her power to change that

She’s just getting warmed up. She’s an actual full blown fascist. I’ve never seen a more dangerous politician in my lifetime

Its a way back for her family to be from India - she is the child of colonial administrators in Africa IIRC and they were not HIndus.

Braverman is a member of the Triratna Buddhist Community, formerly the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order,[141] but is not a member of the Triratna Buddhist Order.[142] She took her oath of allegiance as an MP on the Buddhist Dhammapada.[143]

Her mother is of Tamil Hindu descent but her father is of Goan descent, and with the surname 'Fernandes' very likely Catholic.

She was presumably not brought up a Buddhist, although she appears to lack the zealous devotion of a convert.

In order to succeed, Braverman has to get in front of the members who will back her. But she needs enough letters to go to the 1922 Committee to force a no-confidence motion, and Sunak's allies are convinced that only a handful of MPs actually support her. Even if others have sent letters for other reasons (Sunak being shit, mainly), they will probably withdraw them if it's a Braverman coup.

Basically, he might as well sack her, and she can swan back in after a GE as leader of the opposition, if she really wants the hard graft of that. Which I'm fine with, if the Tories really want to go in that direction, just don't give her the PM job by default before then.

Ernie – you know a bit about this stuff I believe?

Braverman was previously associated with her local Triratna Buddhist Order as a "Mitra".

My very limited knowledge of Buddhism is based on attending pretty much weekly the Triratna Buddhist centre in Croydon, mostly for yoga, sometimes meditation (including loving-kindnes!) and occasionally Buddhist classes which is really more philosophy than anything else.

But I'm Catholic, not Buddhist! And I actually attended my local mosque this afternoon for a meeting concerning Palestine! I have a general respect for other people's beliefs.

I know that you don't necessarily TJ, my remain-loving friend!

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/nov/12/tommy-robinson-israel-hamas-war-could-mark-return-of-far-right-figure

Robinson’s comeback is, however, likely to be short-lived. He lost a libel lawsuit in 2021 for slurs against a Syrian schoolboy who was filmed being attacked at school, and the attorney general’s office is considering taking legal action for contempt of court after a documentary repeating the libel was circulated.

Assuming it went to trial and he were convicted, it could mean that by early 2024 Robinson is back behind bars. Given his previous convictions – which include fraud, assault, stalking, using threatening behaviour and contempt of court – he could be looking at up to two years in prison.

Two years doesn't sound like much but having him behind bars early next year, and at such a critical time, would be useful.

The thing is, Braverman is emboldening the likes of Yaxley-lennon with her hate fuelled rhetoric.
See the last day or two for examples.

She may call herself a 'Buddhist', but that statement holds about as much water as me walking past a Karate gym and calling myself a black belt.

Even the Buddhist community in London have told her to sod off, in their own respectful, non-confrontational way.

I could almost suggest that Bravermans' words in recent weeks actually caused some of the clashes between the police and EDL type people.
It's almost as if Braverman wants to stir up hatred and distrust. Someone like that has no place in public office.
But of course I would not say such a thing as fact, it's purely an observation and conjecture on my part.
*Cough*.

So… trouble at the pro Palestine march would have been an ideal one to get her supporters on board with both ramping up restrictions and also the general support of racist elements.

Problem is, it was likely to be both large and peaceful which really doesn’t suit the agenda. “Hundreds of thousands of people peacefully protesting causing no trouble” doesn’t help sell the idea of needing to restrict right to protest in any way.

Solution? Deliberately stir up trouble. It didn’t look to have been easy to feasible to get the protest itself to not behave itself and there’s only so far “offensive logos, chants and stickers” would get her. So just go ahead and stroke up trouble with a group far easier to incite to trouble, then encourage reporting to conflate the two events such that the Palestine march not appears to have caused trouble. Job jobbed.

The above appears to be exactly what has happened and and sickened and appalled both that it has happened and that it’s being defended, including the deliberately mis leading messages coming from the top of our own government.

I’ve never seen a more dangerous politician in my lifetime

Very much this. We are sleepwalking into letting right wing politicians think they can "use" the far right bully boys, choosing to ignore how well that has gone when it's been tried before in history.

First they came for the Just Stop Oil protesters....then they came for the antiwar protestors....

Do you reckon if Cliff Richard rereleased "Devil Woman" with a video of Braverman clips we could get him to Number 1 again at Christmas?

Two years doesn’t sound like much but having him behind bars early next year, and at such a critical time, would be useful

Not sure a 'Free Tommy' campaign during an election is a good thing. Might allow Reform to leach off some more votes from the Tories though.

It’s pretty clear what she’s after doing here and it’s another case where I think Sunak agrees with her…

She wants the right to authorise what protests do and don’t go ahead to be taken out of the hands of the police, who have to abide by the law on assessing any restrictions, and placed in the hands of politicians (namely herself) instead

Apparently the proposals are already written. She needed some disorder this weekend in order to make the point why this should be the case, so she invited it

This is the behaviour you associate with tinpot dictatorships, not democracies, but then we know this lot all hold democratic norms in contempt.

We’ve Johnson to thank for that, but someone with a far more sinister agenda was bound to be along and eye the fragility he showed in our (unwritten) constitution and how to bypass it

She would love that - all this evil talk boosts her image. Not that she is not evil mind.

Binners is spot on.
