Loved by some, hated with a passion by others 😆
It's one I keep thinking about learning, and maybe even constructing my own set as I've the lathe, though maybe thats a step too far.
As i'm always watching them on YT, this popped up the other day.
Basically an Indian piper and Spanish pipers backing.
I'm in the hate camp when it comes to those bloody things.
It's an instrument I'd love to be able to play, not for the dirge you hear on Princes Street during the Edinburgh Festival but for the sorta stuff on Martin Bennet/Shooglenifty/Peatbog Faeries etc play.
The highland pipes sound absolutely tremendous when played well, but bloody awful when played badly!
I’m a lover, especially when played in the right setting.
We once listened to a piper in full highland dress, big red beard too, at the car park up Glencoe, playing some sad lament. The weather was bleak which added to the effect.
especially when played in the right setting.
I think that is rather key. I have heard one at a memorial and it suited the occasion but on the other hand there used to be one being played on the local highstreet I assume all day. Not sure how the staff managed to resist from chinning them.
Bag O shite
+1 on Martyn Bennet if you want some ‘hardcore’ pipe music - we were driving around the top of the island on a deserted single track road with views across to Canna, Rum and Skye and it came on as a random shuffle - it was just awesome. Sadly missed in these parts.
