OK, I know there are a few STW Volvo owners out there (the ones who saw the light and avoided Skoda or Audi).

Well first a PSA.....if you have a D5 engine and are not sure when the cambelt was last changed then JUST CHANGE IT NOW!

If anyone past Huddersfield West bound on the M62 on Wednesday they would have seen a majestic XC90 just past J22 on the hard shoulder. Well that car is now scrap as the aux pulley seized, snapping the perfectly healthy aux belt which then took out the perfectly healthy cam belt. Result? Knackered engine and their for the car is scrap (though check out the Volvo forum for some very good spares opportunities).

Now the other bit. I have a 2.5 tonne roadside ornament outside my house with two virtually new Avon 235/60 R18 tyres on pretty decent Atlantis rims. The rears are the same tyre and must have 5mm plus on them.

So if you have an XC90 with scabby wheels or knackered tyres then get your backsides over to South Leeds for a mega deal before this car disappears to a random scrap yard next week.

Other bits including roof aero bars available.

Happy to help the STW community, slightly gutted that a perfectly good car was killed by a £30 component failure.

Hi! Just seen both your posts. Rusty: £600 is the scrap value I have been offered. Car is in good condition other than the cam belt damage. There are £400 worth of tyres on the thing too!

Vinnyeh: I have a load cover in the garage somewhere, never used it. You can have it for £10 less than the typical Ebay price (not sure what that is have not researched.

What age and model is it? You'll be surprised what a non-runner goes for on t'bay.

That said you should be able to get a replacement used D5 fit for less than £1500.

It's a 2005MY 163bhp with the 5 speed auto and no DPF to worry about.

Where about are you CHB? We were looking for a cheap XC90, if the rest is in reasonable nick it might be prime for an engine transplant!

Hi OHP. Car is in Leeds. Reg is DG54ANR if you want to do MOT check. All kept in splendid condition for an old gal.

New Volvo suspension arms last year. Brakes OK and always Pagid/ATE. Regular fluids changes etc.

Top spec leather and tow bar etc. RNP has first refusal.

I was considering getting something newer/smaller for work anyway, just not this soon!

Genuinely a good car up to the ford spec pulley taking out the cambelt!

Commiserations

A new Cambelt wouldn't have helped if it was an aux pulley at seized.

Having one of these and having changed an alternator, there is 1mm separating the aux belt from cambelt, so any issues with any pulleys is a big danger.

Moral of the story is to use your ears and always keep an ear out for the health of all pulleys by listening out for any chirping, and visually look down the sight of the aux belt to make sure it is running nice and straight and not wonky due to a wobbly worn pulley

Sorry I had to pull out - completely forgot I'm storing my parents car for a month which will take up workshop space.

D5 engines are plentiful - an easy job for someone half handy with spanners who wants a bargain XC90.

Gutted for the OP-nowt worse than when a cared for car lets you down big style.

If anyone decides to do this I would highly recommend putting a new core plug in the block.... I had one loosen (just after a service) and it cost £800 to replace the £5 part because the gearbox has to come out to get to the back of the engine.

Do the main oil seal at the same time which I believe is right next to it.
