Hi all,

Looking to tap some collective wisdom on building my own shed in the coming months. I'm in the process of drawing things out and planning the design so will pop up a drawing later to help illustrate things, but in the interim:

i'm planning a pent-roof shed. I've seen some wisdom regarding shed floor battens running from shaped end to shaped end (which in my case is horizontally when looking top down), but i dont know if there is a specific reason for this. I have a feeling it will be easier if i go vertically based on the shape of the shed, but if there is a gotcha waiting for me when i do this i'd like to catch it at design stage.

Any advice appreciated!

Do you mean the floor joists, or some kind of runner/beam to sit the joists on?

Sorry yes, floor joists. So the online advice i've seen suggests the joists should run from shaped end to shaped end, so the floorboards would run perpendicular to this. I'm just not sure if there is a good reason for this.

I know this thread is useless without a diagram, so i'll spin something up tonight.

Most of the diagrams I've seen show joists running in the shortest direction.
Assuming that the shed base is still rectangular.
That's certainly what I've done.

right, so your pic there mimics the advice i've seen. Here's my plan so far:

so, i've got to lay timber bearers one way, floor joists the other, then floor boards the other way again. So, the way mr overshoots pic is, the bearers are in brown and the joists in blue, which i think would be ok. the lines are obviously not to scale though 🙂

On a related note I'm thinking the bearers in brown will be 75*75 or 100*100 tanalised posts resting on concrete blocks(400mm*215*100), with probably 75*50 or 100*50 joists in blue. I was thinking 600mm centres for the block spacing would be ok, given i'm not parking a JCB in the shed. Anyone have any wise words on this?
