Oh woe is me, great is my suffering. I cast this offering to the mighty STW Oracle and pray that your guidance flows freely:-

I have two transport issues:

1) Whilst I am at pillage in Aberdeen and the wife is running/ruining my kingdom in Devon, I need to get my DH bike, packed in its evoc transport bag and weighing in at about 28kg from Exeter to Haringey in that there London, courier? Reccomendations?

2) I will then fly to Luton on thursday night (10pm), travel to Haringey to collect my bike and two mates and their bikes and return to luton on friday morn (5am)to fly out to Alps. Was considering hire car for one night only, worried it will not fit 3 dh bikes in bags/boxes and three stormtroopers.

Can she pack your bike up properly? If not take to LBS give money to sort. If she can get it in the bag then in a box and use one of the many loose your box specialists! Hence the question about packing a bike up for transport - this is possibly the bit where it can go wrong!

Hire a van from Luton or people carrier thing for the day, the better idea (possibly cheaper) is get your mates to sort out getting them and your bike to the airport and check into the Ibis for some kip (Land 10pm, collect bags, sort car (if anyone is at the desk) leave airport 11pm if you are lucky? 40 min drive arrive at mates house 1am?? 4hrs crap kip then up and drive back drop car etc.)

Do you not think sending the bike in the evoc bag is ok?
Ibis is a good idea.

I was suggesting packing it in the bag and then putting that in a bike box for some extra security and somewhere to easily put the packing labels. More a belt and braces approach for dealing with couriers.
Most of the main couriers will do a collection/delivery but someone will need to be in all day to wait for them - if you have a friendly LBS that might be easier. Other option is to get the bag/box couriered to you destination if there will be somebody there.

Yeah could line the bag. I have used various couriers many times. I wondered if you know of any that can deal with a 28kg dh bike.

All of the main ones will, Just looked at one of the freight brokers I used to get stuff over to Oz and a rough bike bag size was about £35 next day ( http://www.transglobal.org.uk/default.asp), senditnow will do it fine just watch out for the insurance.

+1 stay in hotel, see if the hotel are ok with you delivering your bike there too. Your mates can get a taxi (make sure it's a big one!!)

I don't see why you need to collect your mates, they can get themselves to the airport with their bikes. I would stay at a cheap hotel near the airport and have the bike delivered there or alternatively your mates house and they can bring it after its delivered to them. Addison Lee taxis are all people carriers, you might need two. I've slept at the airport overnight a few times, not ideal but do-able and free 😕

Isn't there a bloke that'll ship your bike to your resort in the Alps?

Obviously it's a whole lot easier logistically and you get the added bonus of sitting in the pub at the airport while your mates heft their bikes about 😉
