Hi all-We're off to mid-Wales for the week soon, travelling around in a campervan and ideally hoping to MTB,hike, surf and any of the other mid-life crisis stuff associated with a mid-forties couple desperately trying to re-kindle the dying embers of their youth.
Was ideally looking for advise regarding campsites, trail centres, places to surf, definites to see and also to avoid if possible please.
Only currently got as far as Coed-y Brenin as a place to start as it's supposedly pretty user-friendly and diverse (GF is a roadie and fairly new to MTB),would like to visit Portmeiron, hike Smowdonia and maybe take in the National white-water centre too.
Any advice would be much appreciated, particularly regarding quiet little campsites and any hidden gems that we'd otherwise miss out on.
Thanks in advance, and any suggestions appreciated 🙂
Id be tempted to take in Nant Yr Arian too.. its all pretty smooth an rollable but if you hit it with more speed its ace.
Many thanks-Will add it to the list
Nanty is a must if you haven't been before and a good introduction trail
As above, NYA is a great ride. A nice balance of trail centre playground and 'out there' wilderness feel. Nothing too gnar for a noob, too.
I’m a fan of Llandegla, I’m a roadie who mountain bikes. I like the climbs at Llandegla....The red is easy enough for a relatively new rider. Failing that the blue is rollable, some great views as well.
just for kicks, this is good, did it with wife last autumn..... https://www.zipworld.co.uk/adventure/velocity
If you want to surf...then Surf Snowdonia in dolgarrog. you have to prebook.
Or in the sea its Hells Mouth on the Llynn peninsula or Rhosneigr on Anglesey.
For a quiet campsite I'd choose Graig Wen, Arthog, fabulous location and Sarah and John are the loviest hosts too. Short drive from CYB, Mawddach Trail bottom of the site.

Just don't take the noob down the reaper trail.😛
I'd suggest a trip to the Elan Valley too if you're going to NYA.

Pamaps grass outside? Careful fruit bowl?
The beach at porthmadog (black rock sands) is lovely, drive your car literally on to the beach and wander for miles, nice basic campsite there to which again fronts on to the sea.
Trail centre wise cyb is good with various grades, I love penmachno as it's properly natural and would make a good half day for a newbie with nothing too gnar.
Blaneau for a bit of downhill and zip wire/caving type fun.
Lake bala area for sheer beautiful scenery.
I could go on and on.
Many thanks for the suggestions guys, all very much appreciated and please keep them coming.
Anybody camped on Shell Island, or is that the complete antithesis of quiet and cosy ?
Up Bwlch Y Groes from the south, perhaps having cycled from Dolgellau on the A470 "The Big One."
Gwerniago farm - lovely campsite near Maccynlleth plus the Climachx mtb trail, The osprey centre near there is well worth a vist even if you aren't a twitcher
if you do go to Graig wen or thereabouts, a visit to Cregganau lakes and the blue laggon at Fairbourne are well worth it
if you have a look at flattyres.com, lots of xc routes in that area - Colin has one that takes in Cregannau lake and the Mawdach cycle path and isn't too teccie although quite long.
Beach couple of miles north of above Aberdovey (big layby ) is lovely and in right conditions has good surf.
Shell Island will be hell.
On Anglesey, a trrip to Newborough beach is well worth it, walk north to the little island and go for a swim. There is a lovely campsite called vineyard camping or something nearby
Many thanks campalumpa
