It’s probably something a lot of you know, it’s probably something that most of you, like me, had never considered. In this hot weather it’s likely that hosepipes and water will be used to cool down and children will have lots of fun squirting it around the patio and gardens. This isn’t a water saving thread.

A warning - if the hosepipe has been left out in the sun then any water inside can get extremely hot, hot enough to cause severe injuries and scalding. I only realised this a couple of years ago when a young child, not so far away, was seriously scalded.

Please spread this note of caution around your family and friends.

And on that note, enjoy the summer!

The water that's been stuck in the hose can also be well manky, so always best to flush the first bit out any way!

My eldest is still traumatised from this - his uncle once coiled a long hose on his roof to create a makeshift solar powered shower, then all the kids had to shower naked in the garden 🤣

In my brother's defence there were 11 children staying at his house in rural France at the time.

Good advice - also about the water being manky.

See also steering balls which have metal clamps to hold them to the steering wheel. That ****ing hurt after the car had been parked in the sun for 8 hours yesterday!

Hosepipes should be banned!

Ok that's in jest, but I saw the level of our local reservoir recently (nothing) and wondered why we haven't had a hosepipe ban yet, in Yorkshire at least.

Get one of these:

https://www.hozelock.com/product/pico-reel/

A) Very compact, can store in shed, storage box or under kitchen sink

B) Small diameter hose to discorage water wastage

Something else to avoid during spells of very hot weather, and that’s leaving keys on the top of the dash or seat for extended periods of time. I know it’s unlikely, under normal circumstances, but it’s possible if the car’s on private property someone might toss the keys onto the dash for someone else to take the car away.
I had to get a car from a storage area at work, picked the key up off the dash and the chromed metal strip around it blistered my fingers! The temperature showed 40° once I wrapped the key in some paper pocket tissues to avoid burning myself again while starting the car. Some profane words were said at the time! 🤬🔥

My mum had an original honda civic with black vinyl seats.

Hottest solid known to man.

An interesting variation. I have one of the popup lid drinks bottles, the sort that urges you with motivational 'keep going!' type phrases instead of volume markings. I left it in the car today, that'll show it with its heckling. I got back in the car after work, opened the lid...and the heat has built up pressure enough that the straw fed nozzle jetted all over my face and chest (stop it!)

Hahaha - except after all day in a black car, it was about the same temperature as a cup of tea, and i have a minor burn now on my neck and chest (it's a bit red, not like a proper blister)

Just put the hosepipes away, banned! Unjustified too as our water in Doncaster comes from boreholes to the aquifers which are still in good supply after last year’s record wetness.

Well we have it now.

In 2023-24, Yorkshire Water lost 20% of the water used by its customers (almost 95 billion litres) to leaks. Nicola Shaw, the Yorkshire Water CEO, recently got a £371,000 bonus (on top of her annual £585,000 salary). This year charges for customers increased, on average, by almost 30%.
