There is a swarm of these things nesting in the space between my wooden/fibreboard shed ceiling and the metal roof. What are they? Also will they cause any damage?
The shed is far enough from the main sitting area they aren't a nuisance. So happy to leave in situ if harmless.

Replying to see topic.
I'm pretty sure its a tree bee.
Difficult without the head but either a Tree bumblebee or a Forest cuckoo bumblebee. Depends on where you are in the country but probably more likely to be the latter.
Didn’t read the swarm bit. Tree then (are you SE?).
Thanks.
The behaviour fits that of the Tree Bee. According to the link the swarming bees are males which don't sting. So I'll leave them to it and just avoid standing right below the nerst entrance.

We've the same bees currently residing in our storage shed. Soon to be evicted. Theyve nested in some garden fleece so gently being removed in that using a 2.5m pole.
Already been stung on the eyebrow when I first discovered them the other day. :-/
Shame, I'd really like to leave them be (hah) but I need my hedge trimmers tools.
Southeast? Glasgow area.
I am behind the times apparently. It used to be a Southern England species, I hadn’t realised how far it has now colonised.
lovewookie - the rspb advise to not cut hedges until late August, after bird nesting season.
I have hand trimmed a few stray branches after checking for birds nests, but that's all.
