Anyone else (care to admit) having this problem? My t-shirts are accumulating a waxy build-up under the arms from my deoderant (sure roll-on). I don't remember always having this problem. I think it's maybe down to using a different detergent (I thought they were both biological). My questions to you are:

- how to get rid of current build-up? I've tried soaking them in vinegar a bit before washing, it kind of works but I was wondering if there was something better

- how to prevent/minimise in future? (£5 to whoever suggests stop wearing deoderant [or t-shirts] first)

Use an invisible one, like nivea black and white invisible.

My old tshirts have the hard bits in the armpits from old antipersperants, new ones since using black and white, don't.

I don't use deodorant! Shower and clean clothes works for me. Me wife says I'm just a freak or vampire as I don't smell, other than after a camping/cycling trip away.

haha - I do actually use that very deoderant for my work shirts and it does seem to work thinking about it. I use a different one for weekends and days off to mix it up, maybe I should re-think.

Don't use deodorant. Wash and use natural materials instead

T-Shirts are for the bin (or, more sensibly, turned into face masks)

Hippy deodorant is working for me these days, a tube lasts for ages, doesn't **** up my t-shirts: https://nuudcare.com

Let it dry before putting your shirt on. Running around the streets waving your arms aloft helps with this.

Failing that, cut circles in the armpits of all your t-shirts.

I've stopped wearing deodrant (and t-shirts) during lockdown.

Where do I collect my £5 from?

- Start with dry pits
- Shake the can well before application as that will help get the right size particles coming out.
- Hold 10-15cm away
- Very short sprays - the mist is enough to cover the whole armpit

Benefits:
- No t-shirt clag
- Less product used / better for the environment

this. Problem completely solved. It’s a quid in wilko. (Or it will be if they’re still around..) no need to change any habits or use rocks.

I never use the stuff. Try going without for a while to see how you get on.

Providing they are not ‘delicates’ soak in the bath with washing liquid overnight then rub vanish on them vigorously then wash with some oxy action stuff. I used to get this on my work shirts when I worked in very hot conditions.

Then use less/ nivea black and white. If you have problem perspiration see the doctor who can prescribe something to reduce the problem

Apparently Botox injections can stop perspiration, wears off eventually though.

I never use it either. Genuine question - do you need it? I don’t but I know my niece (bless her) really does. Guess people’s bodies are different.

Apparently some people are just genetically lucky and dont produce a smell.

The ABCC11 gene determines axillary body odor and the type of earwax. ... Most of the world's population have the gene that codes for the wet-type earwax and normal body odor; however, East Asians are genetically predisposed for the allele associated with the dry-type earwax and a reduction in body odor.

I used to know a chap who worked as a mountain bike guide in Greece. He loved his Oxbow tee shirts and of an evening, he'd walk from their accomodation to the guests hotel with this elbows level with his shoulders and forearms hanging down to avoid this very issue.

Personally, I go with no deodorant and natural fibers where possible.

Although it's considered that roll on is better for the environment, spray on is better for your shirts.

It's the Nivea stuff that causes the t-shirt clag for me. It's not coloured, but definitely there.

Read somewhere Madonna washes her stage clothes in vodka for this very reason.

My experience is it's definitely product related so try a few different products and see how you get on. But either way it affects the underarms eventually...it is the main reason I ditch work shirts after a good year or so of use when the underarms turn a nasty colour and the material goes like cardboard. I only use anti-persperant too so have a hypothesis it is probably due to the ingredient that makes it an anti-persperant. If I go for straight deodorant I just get the damp pit problem so haven't switched over to test my hypothesis.

As to not wearing it...well I could get away with it for a day and have on occasion where I've run out or been away with work and forgotten my travel sized stuff. But if I do use it I can get a good 2 or 3 wears out of a work shirt and a good week or so out of a T-shirt so saves significantly on clothes washing which is better for the environment and those Vietnamese children in the sweat shops who make all the clothes we wear.

The thing is there are plenty of people who stink of BO. I catch a wiff of BO in most built up environments at some point...pretty common. Most people are generally too polite to raise it with them and let them crack on. so the individual is probably blissfully unaware of the noxious odours they are producing under the deluded assertion that "I don't need deodorant or anti-persperant". BO is like you're own farts...you don't really notice them, but they are hugely toxic to those around you. So the chances are you do need it but nobody has had the heart to tell you.

thanks wobbliscott, yeah that's kinda what I was thinking but didn't have the heart to say regarding the not wearing it option. Whether you need it is a fairly subjective personal call, nobody needs it. I don't think I'm particularly smelly but my concern is that come the end of the day I'm definitely a little more fruity without than with and whilst I don't find the smell disgusting my concern is that I'm just used to it and it's offensive to others. Realistically I think most people would not confront someone about their body odour unless it was pretty bad, despite finding it unpleasant, I know I wouldn't.

Whilst I'm over sharing in public... Previously I've shaved my armpits which definitely helps a lot (I find it's the hair that smells and not the skin). I went for the hack everything back every month or 2 then let it grow which isn't the most comfortable.

Eh? Wear once then bin? That’s a bit extravagant, Shirley?
I just use a quick spritz of Lynx Dark Temptation, most things seem to bring me out in a rash, that doesn’t. I’ve got tee shirts I bought at gigs in the early 80’s I’m still wearing, no problems with claggy ’pits messing them up.
