I made the mistake of glancing at the phone on the chairlift this afternoon and played 3 « straightforward » moves with a 100% blunder rate.

Must be the cold, I played some 10-min Rapid games tonight and had a fairly woeful success rate.

Blunder followed by great move followed by blunder...

Fairly sure I played a cheater the other night as well. A 1000-ranked player who, towards the end, suddenly played about 8 or 9 ! and !! moves in a row to win. 🤔

@stevomcd

I was wondering what had happened.I thought that move tossing your rook away was out of character.

But as you were on a chairlift somewhere and I am currently at work at 00:45am my sympathy is indeed limited

With you there! The prospect of 40 more years in the office outside Glasgow that I was working in 15 years ago is the main reason most of my work these days involves chairlifts!

Well that was close. A series of mistakes by both of us v Django2357. Thought I was losing it at one point.

☹️ I had been trying so hard not to lose concentration and leave myself open to that fork. I had a tentative plan, but you always had your pieces just right, to prevent me. Thanks though.

The number of games on the go has fallen greatly now, in both T10 and T10a, any chance of a Christmas tournament with 1 day a move?

Just noticed Chess.com thinks one of my opponents was cheating.

CHESScom
12 days ago

We have detected that one or more of your recent opponents has violated our Fair Play Policy. As compensation for potentially unfair rating losses, we adjusted your following ratings:

Daily: 1462 + 17 => 1479

No idea who it was. I vaguely recall in one of my other tournaments a couple of players playing well for their grade. I can't find any losses that look like it though. Not sure if Chess.com delete these games from the database.

Doing a bit of research - the way it works is when Chess.com detects a cheater anyone who lost to them in the last 3 months gets rating points refunded. I wass only checking back a month. 3months is too far back to try and identify who it was.

When we close an account for cheating, anyone they played in last three months, up to 100 games, will have their rating points automatically refunded.

When this happens, Chess.com will send you a message letting you know that points have been returned, which looks like this:

Anyone else had a review of 2022 e-mail from Chess.com?

Mine has me at 332 games played.
Best win an 1878 graded player.
Highest rating 1566.

Obvious 2023 target is 365 games. Mine are almost all daily games. If I throw a few 10 minute games into the mix 365 should be easy.

Any love for a one day a move Christmas tournament? As suggested by gauss1777

Can do it as a one group 1 day a move for up to 12 players.

As usual 1 day a move but the vacation option left open for anyone who couldn't avoid missing the odd day.

Count me (kprook) in for the one day Christmas tournament please.

In fact for any future tournaments add me in as the default. Can’t see me not wanting to play in any of them.

I've been playing my lad every evening this week. He managed a Stalemate the other day, but i'm currently unbeaten...

However, i don't think i'm ready to open myself up to the likely chess masters on here !

I've just signed up to the 2023 Chess.com Championship Tournament. I did the 2022 one and got through about 3 rounds before meeting people at 2000+ and just getting annihilated.

Been playing a fair bit of the 10-min Rapid games online recently. Some..."variable" results... ! 😂

My 2022 Chess.com review so you can all have a laugh.
1137 games played with only 55% wins which includes timed out games.
Best win against 1502 rated player.Great I thought until I realised he timed out on the 2 games and then had his account closed for unfair play.
Highest rating 1245 but back down to around 1150 which seems to be my home.

By the law of averages, that's good. As a general rule in chess, assuming fair play all round, a higher ranked player should beat a lower ranked one 80+% of the time.

When it becomes fairly level abilities, so say a 1200 against a 1300, you'd expect 50:50.

I lost a game the other day in one of these STW tournaments. According to the chess.com stats my accuracy was 31.8% and included 2 mistakes and 10 (yes ten!) blunders. Trust me, you won't be out of your depth!!

Despite the horrendous stats it was actually an enjoyable game, one of those ones where the advantage swung back and forward a few times.

Chessron99 invited.

@fruitbat can you confirm your Chess.com username is "fruitbat" and not one of the variations like fruitbat99 etc

For anyone interested in the ratings. Here is a lost of what you are expected to score aganst an opponent depending on rating difference. For example 1200 player against 1000 player. THe 1200 players should score 75%. So a win and a draw.

https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&q=chess+rstings+win+percentages

Crazylegs is rated around 300 higher than me. He should score 85% against me.

Seems fairly accurate. Overall we are at Crazylegs 8 wins, me 5 wins, 1 draw.

https://www.chess.com/member/jlyon77

More than 15% score for me but that includes times when gradings were closer together.

Anyway, grades are averages which will vary over a small numbers of games.

They can't make allowances for StevoMcD making moves while on a chairlift!

I play on my phone and a few times I've been distracted by messages popping up etc. I do wonder about some people I've played as well - if they've lost connection or had a similar distraction.

One player resigned in the middle of a fairly equal game, no explanation - a couple of minutes into a 10-min game, he just resigned and disappeared. Could easily be some sort of family drama in the background or the boss has just phoned. Who knows?!

Thanks. I was very lucky, with a couple of games to go I thought you would win by half a point. But, a game I’d presumed lost, turned totally around. T10A was close all over, with pretty much anyone able to take points off anyone else. It’s made it thoroughly enjoyable.

Some tough games in STW Solstice. I feel a loss or two coming my way.

And I see the Inaugural STW tournament, started just over 2 years ago is still running! One game still going.

@Stevomcd

Apologies. I just noticed you had asked to join the current tournament before it started.

Sorry to say this but IRC you are devaluing the latest STW tournament . A player with a 1500 rating does not lose his queen in 3 games with stupid mistakes like you have made . That's beginner level stuff.

Haha!
To be fair, everyone makes blunders. I've had some absolute clangers in some of my 10-min Rapid games...

I'm in the chess.com Daily Play 2023 Championship tournament which starts tomorrow. I did the 2022 one and got through the first 2 or 3 rounds quite well. Then I came up against the 2000+ players and got annihilated!

To be fair, everyone makes blunders.

I wouldn’t be surprised if someone who is likely playing several games at the same time, let’s their guard down a touch, when playing opponents 400 points below them.

I had 2 queens (almost a 3rd) against ctk and he still beat me! 😭😭

Apologies for not maintaining my usual standards. I have a tendency to be a bit casual when playing 20 odd games at once. I don't even have the excuse of being on a ski lift.

Though in fact over the last 30 days my rating is up 35 so I must be playing to my grading despite the odd horrendous blunder.

https://www.chess.com/member/irc1979

Grading differences aside many of the players in this latest STW tournament have been very solid.

Did you see the article on chessm.com about how overloaded they are now, there are millions of new members! Reckoned that there were about 50,000 moves a second being played at the busiest times. 😳

I got through Round 1 of the Daily Championship thing, won all my games which makes me sound better than I actually am - one was that I won most on timeout; two, I was the highest ranked in the group so some games were a walkover. I do wonder why players ranked 300 sign up for a Championship...

Bit of a pause now while the rest of the games finish then onto Round 2...

OK. Invites out. As well as replies to this thread I sent invites to anyone in the STW Solstice and @stevomcd. Starting 30th January. Currently set up as one group of 12. If we get more than 12 players I'll split it into two groups.

Called this one the Spassky tournament as his birthday is 30th January. An early chess memory was being on a camping holiday in Quebec during the Fischer - Spassky match. No TV access. So my dad bought a paper ever day and played through the moves of the previous day's game on a board at our campsite.

@KennyP Looking better now. A visit to GP last Friday ended with admission that night. MRI scan Monday, operation on spine (lumbar decompression) today. While I gather it is a relatively routine operation any surgery has risks etc.

While I thought I was handling it fairly well I realised I was blundering regularly in some of my online games. Luckily by random chance I was on days off Fri -Tues. Nightshift Wed Thu and have the weekend covered with time off.

But surgeon says operation went as planned. Expect her home tomorrow or Saturday.

@dti &

@RamseyNeil Sorry. Tournamnet has started.

PS @RamseyNeil No apology required. I need to confess to blundering another queen in a current non STW game. But as per first paragraph I guess my mind was elsewhere.

Chess.com seems a bit glitchy now and then. Issues I have had have been resolved either by reloading in a different window or using a different browser. Had to use the alt browser a few times when using android Firefox and it wouldn't let me Queen a pawn. Logged in on Microsoft edge and made the move with no issues.

Chess.com seems a bit glitchy now and then.

I lost my entire account. It was being quite glitchy - refusing to process moves and so on, it'd sometimes take a few attempts to actually get a move to work. Then one day I had an email from chess.com saying corrupted account and closed for security reasons.

It include steps on how to set up a new account which I did and it allowed me to transfer my old friends list across but I lost my entire game history, my position in the Daily Play Championship Tournament and my ranking. And my previous Gold level subscription. So far no response as to what happened or if I can get my ranking and subscription reinstated. Not played at all since then. 🙁

Missed the last tournament due to a combo of a busy winter season and the arrival of a new small human to our household. He isn't showing much interest in chess, bikes or snowboards yet, but his time will come, I'm sure. Happy to get involved again now that season is over and I have plenty of opportunity of being awake in the wee, small hours!

I was running a course in Switzerland back in January. There was a weird-looking chess set lying around in our favourite apres pub and I ended up playing a couple of (real life! with a board!) games with it's owner and got the story:

Quirky chess set 1

Quirky chess set 2

This guy was travelling in Africa in a camper van when covid hit. He got stuck somewhere isolated with very little to do. Another dude in the same situation played a bit of chess. So they made a set out of nuts and bolts they had lying around so that they could pass the time.

Fun games. I won both despite having consumed a significant amount of post-snowboard beer so all the online training must be paying off!
