Looking at somewhere near Cardigan for the summer hols.  Will be mostly hanging around at the beach, doing a few walks, chilling out, but looking for some sort of activities we could do.

I see kayak hire is available, also sailing dinghies (which are actually cheaper) but wondering if there were any other things we could spend a modest sum of cash on - I dunno, quad bike hire or horse trekking or something.  Kids are only 7 and 9 though so probably need accompanying.

Do horse trekking places cater for small kids?  My eldest is becoming obsessed with the idea of trekking through wilderness on a horse.

Strange place Cardigan - my home town which explains a lot...

Horse riding can be had at a village called Crosswell which is about six miles out of town. We've used them and it was good with really good views of the Preseli's. If you use them make sure you make the effort to drive to Rosebush afterwards for a beer and food at Tafarn Sinc. If you're prepared to travel further for riding then we have also used Nolton Stables in Nolton Haven where you get the to ride through a nice valley followed by a trot on the beach and in the sea. This option would be my first choice.

Just outside of Cardigan is the Welsh Wildlife Centre at Cilgerran. It's a nature park rather than a big animal type affair and all the better for it. Great cake too. There's also a decent castle in Cilgerran if that sort of thing floats your boat.

Some great beaches so you'll be spoilt for choice if the weather is decent. Nearest to Cardigan is Poppit which is a big sandy bay, great views and also good rock pools once the tide has gone out. Mwnt is great but will be rammed so you'll spend your time having to watch your children like a hawk so you don't lose them. Newport is another big sandy bay and also has a nice little town where you can get something to eat. Other good beaches include Aberporth, Tresaith, and Llangrannog.

Cardigan is a bit of a missed opportunity for holidaymakers I reckon. Very little parking and not anywhere I'd want to visit. There is however one decent curry house and a decent outdoor pizza restaurant both of which are next to the river.

Kayak hire was very expensive the last time I checked. I now live in Bristol but bring my family "home" every year to show them the places I spent my younger years. Even though it's my home town, we avoid Cardigan as it's just not as nice as it's neighbour Pembrokeshire. If you need any specific or general info then just ask.

Another slightly jaded response by virtue of being brought up near there (although I visit Cardigan occasionally, and I think it has improved over the last few years):

There used to be loads of pony trekking places, most of which I would expect will take small kids...

Loads of great (but busy) beaches. (We used to go to Mwnt and there would only be about a dozen people there.... then it was in one of the newspapers as being a 'hidden gem' - buggered ever since 🙁  Can still be entertaining if you like watching drivers who are unused to reversing, driving cars they believe are about a foot wider than they actually are meeting nose to nose on a very narrow single track road 🙂 )

Aberaeron is nice to spend an afternoon - some good resteraunts near the harbour

BUT, the important stuff:

Go HERE  ...it's brilliant (stuff the wife and kids if they're not interested).
