Hi there,
it's ages since I logged on here. I did a lot of mountain biking from 2005-2014. Then I had a bit of a rest until recently when I got my 2012 Stump Jumper 26" bike back out along with starting to use a folding bike on the train. I've been riding a few hundred miles per month on my road bike recently too.

All good. I've joined up with a few local people to campaign for better walking and cycling facilities in the Stroud area.
We're on Twitter https://twitter.com/StroudActive
and Facebook

We're organising a demo ride for Sat 25th July regarding the local road widening scheme which has made conditions worse for cyclists and walkers. It would be great to have some support for this

Hi Tom

fellow Stroudie here and happy to support.

Can you post the details here as not everyone who rides a bike uses Facebook and/or Twitter.

Brimscombe based here 👋

@tomstickland

As above, i'm not on FB and i plain just don't get Twitter, can you explain in a bit more detail about:

regarding the local road widening scheme which has made conditions worse for cyclists and walkers.

I know that the council have some kind of Dutch influenced pipe dream to create a segregated highway / cycle track / footpath from town to the bottom of Cowcombe Hill (although they couldn't explain what they'd do at the St Marys pinch point!!!). What other plans are there ❓

Personally (i use it a lot so have a vested interest) i think that a community action group to clear the shared cycle / footpath edges of mud & debris between Clockhouse Vets & Dudbridge Hill would be a great thing to do, theres so much encroachment of mud and bushes that all would benefit by the reclamation & creating a wider path, it should also help with run off too. Plus the addition of some Type1 sub base at the initial bit beside Clockhouse Vets would go a long way to making it a pleasure to use.

Great idea but it'll never happen, despite SDC's green credentials. Such a shame that towpath is waaaaaaay too narrow along there. Totally unworkable. And there's steep steps at one point on it, too.

Personally I don't even use the newly-surfaced multi-use path between Nailsworth and Dudbridge. It's not fit for purpose and overcrowded. That <1m-wide stretch behind Inchbrook Trad Est: 6ft-fence one side and a steep slope on the other. Nowhere to pass.

And then there's local horsey-group who are campaigning to get that path redesignated to a Bridleway so they can ride horses on it. Bonkers.
