Strong dog lead clasps…

This keeps happening to our dog leads - last one has only lasted 4 months and came apart in centre of town…

…can anyone else recommend a lead that has a stronger clasp system?

Or is there something I can put in it’s place (possibly something used in climbing?). Really annoying having to chuck the perfectly good lead bit away each time.

Any climbing karabiner (I prefer screwgate for security) and a bit of climbing rope.

26kN is enough for the strongest dog!

If you want a swivel
https://www.marinesuperstore.com/deck-hardware/shackles/proboat-snap-shackle-swivel-stainless-steel

Or to retrofit in an existing stitched/spliced lead with a swivel

https://www.marinesuperstore.com/deck-hardware/shackles/snap-shackle-swivel-fork

These will take a lot more load than a dog can put through them.

If you can find yourself someone who can splice for a beer you could get a nice custom lead made up from a rope offcut.

Ruffwear have a lockable clip - their bungee leads are good if you have an energetic dog or for running with your dog.

Yep I used a wild country wire gate. Won't freeze up and easily operated with gloves on. Perfect for dog walks up the north face

Climbing rope and karabiner would do the job! haha!

How big is the dog?

I think my lead is one from pets at home but I'd have to double check that as I can't remember..seems solid although the rope is starting to frey a bit, it's probably 4 years old now but my dogs only 8kg.

Come to think about it, I should probably get a new one!

It's for a dog, not Nigel Farrage!

Ruffwear and Halti leads here on this guy who can certainly pull when he spots a deer!

To the OP.
The problem with the one you've just broken is the materials are relatively cheap and weak. A combination of the 'pin' part wears, the hole wears, and the wider swaged part wears (and isnt that much wider than the hole to begin with) ... until it will pull through.
(For me the spring / gate fails or wears out 1st instead on those types).

Best couple I've had, have this end piece from Ruffwear (like on this lead). The jaws interlock too so no inadvertent opening. Yet can still be done 1 handed.

https://www.mountaindog.uk/products/ruffwear-crag-leash-2024

Or the non-stop-dogwear ones with a swivel and gated carabiner.

https://www.mountaindog.uk/products/non-stop-dogwear-touring-bungee-adjustable-leash

Im using a Ruffwear 'front range lesd on my Labrador, which I realy like as its got the gate rhat only opens sufficiently in specific places, and secondary slider to prevent inadvertent opening.
But its not been overly tested in tension loading as my fella generally doesnt pull much (i can't abide having my shoulder pulled out, so I've (mainly... he's still a pup albeit 20kg+ and rising daily of pup) convinced him it annnoys me and life is best when im not annoyed !

For the one linked from the Chandlers earlier:- whilst plenty strong, I'd be mega wary of the spring pin being pulled open by accident and hey presto the shackle instantly pops open and your dog ends up....wherever he wants to be... butchers, bakers, or in the middle of the busy road (my parachute has one of those designs of shackles on one element, precisely to allow mega quick 1 pull detachment of a bridle line)

Ruffwear also do a purposely strong one with a gated karabiner

Got a couple of these, both holding up well after a couple of years (although the long line doesn’t see much action).

We have one of these for our Boxer not had any issues

Does your dog need training better not to pull on the lead so much ?

The clip on our otherwise excellent rubberised long line did the same a few months back. I just put a carabineer through the remaining metal loop.

Long term I'd like to replace the rotating fixing as the line gets quite tangled now. Also want to add a secondary clip, probably using a no sew sailing technique I came across while searching.

And if you need to ascend an off-width crack you have the pro good to go. Admittedly it's going to be a big crack if you're out with a Dogue de Bordeau

I was going to suggest a Tylaska snap shackle - they're used on Spinnaker and A sail sheets and guys and are really strong for the weight, and we ran T8s or 10s on most of the boats I raced. Then I googled them. Might be cheaper to stick with the dog lead things (which as said above are super-cheap construction and almost designed to fail) and get a new dog each time instead...
Only issue with the Proboat swivel suggested above is the split ring release, which could get stuck in your dog's coat. How about something like a Nab shackle?

[edit - the laid and spliced leads from all things rope are really clean looking - most decent chandlery can knock something up like that really easily for you, or you can DIY it with a bit of patience and a Bic biro:

The first one of the two links I posted up looks like this, I couldn’t get an illustration to work last night. They cost £2.05…

The other one has a screw shackle and those cost around £10. Both good for around 500lb.

I've just ordered one of these, as I could do with a new one anyway...

https://www.mountaindog.uk/products/rukka-grip-long-line-options-5m-to-20m-handle-or-no-handle

Hopefully it's good...I've never had a problem with that type of clasp, assuming it's actually well made and not a pound shop special.

Another recommendation for Ruffwear, I use the Crag lead which I put around my waist

Not really a fan of their collars though, I don't like side release clips on them, prefer normal buckle
