do u need to have an internet connection to record a run or just the gps on?

you just need the gps, but you will need the internet connection to transfer that ride to strava so you can see your segments etc.

The GPS will use a tiny amount of data to 'assist' the initial lock; so it'll be slower to fix right at the start if you don't have it. It's not necessary though.
