Was having a really strange dream last night (involving having to cling to a platform travelling at very high speeds) and I woke up with quite dramatic palpitations. Very rapid (160-170) and irregular HR, but not pounding, just light like at rest. Felt weird and anxious through the first part of the morning, but I am ok now apart from a tiredness headache since I also slept badly the previous night.

Anyone else get this?

Just to make it clear I am just talking about it, I'll definitely be down the doctor's and/or hospital if it becomes necessary.

Night terrors. Not unusual - are you under a lot of stress at the moment?

I think my dear old Nan would refer to that as 'no rest for the wicked'..

Well not overtly so. I mean, it's hard work working away from home and all but I was feeling ok. Perhaps I am though and have not really acknowledged it.

I once woke up (from a smutty dream) on my back and dry humping the air.

Lol@hora 🙂

I wouldn't call it terror as such.

Sounds like night terrors to me. for some unkown reason you wake up in a full on adrenaline flight or fight reaction. Most disconcerting - I do it sometimes.

Nowt to worry about

Definitely not adrenaline tho. Didn't feel scared or adrenalined out at all. Wouldn't have been so scary if it was. Plus, adrenaline doesn't give me a very irregular heart rate.

Hmm.

It could be the bad kind of Aids or you might be turning gay. How comfortable are your shoes right now?

Had one on sunday night. Was descending an Alp on a racing bike and really enjoying it, only to round a hairpin at speed to find water across the road, the bike skidded away from me and I sat up in bed screaming 'nooooooooooo!' (in a dramatic movie style according to the misses). Didn't get back to sleep for a couple of hours because my heart was beating so fast... and rode very slowly to work in the morning...

(and, yes, I had been watching le tour!)

Perhaps a medical professional could be of some use to you?

do you wear your hrm in bed ? (only joking)

it's just a dream, nothing to worry about. Dreams often reflect something which is going on in our waking lives -

Perhaps, yes. I was asking for other people's experiences, not medical advice. The reason it's of concern was the rather strange and very disturbing heart rate phenomena - I've clearly had lots of dreams before without this happening.

Hmmm, I would advise taking one large dose of STW immediately before you go to bed to ensure you have STW based dreams. I hear they can be rather good.

I would advise reading any mountain bike mag whilst in bed. Does it for me any night I can't sleep.

...was it good? Did you wake up having 'dramatic palpitations'?

night terrors can be brought on my gastro reflux. When the reflux occurs during sleep paralysis the body attempts to react but because your physical systems are shut down it triggers fight or flight. I discovered this link with my onset of GERD. I discussed this with both a consultant neuro surgeon and a gastro consultant and the last I hear was they were working on a paper relating to the link between night terror and reflux.

since getting the GERD under control the only times its happened is when I've missed my meds and had spicy food or booze. Check your diet and if it occurs again talk to the doctor about it.

Could do, I did eat badly the previous two days.

I'd like to make it clear this was not fight or flight tho. I was not in a state to fight or run away from anything.

Could have been the amount of caffeine I'd had causing palpitations (I'm quite sensitive to it), and thence the bad dream, but I've had coffee problems once or twice before and it was not like that.

sounds exactly like adrenaline reaction combined with sleep paralysis to me. Known as night terrors

I suggest thats exactly what it was - and as for your assessment of your heart rate how accurate is that?

Linked with hypoglycaemia as well

Did you read the 'Cheese' thread just before you went to bed? 🙂

if you are sure that it was irregular and fast, rather than fast with missed beats ("regularly irregular")- it might be PAF (Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrilliation). If so the key questions are how long it lasted and how you felt during it.
