The 2009 event was described as a once in 100years - except it's happened again.
It doesn't mean a flood of this scale will only happen once every 100 years in a clockwork cycle, or will only happen once in every 100 year period. Think of it in terms of describing the severity of the event rather than anything to do with at what point they will happen in time.
edit ^ see above
It's probability...
Probably.
From a hydrologist via Twitter
@JakeZackAndy: 300mm rain
= 300,000,000 litres per km2
= 15 billion litres of water for a 50km2 catchment
He also points out that no fixed flood defences which are environmentally and financially feasible could possibly cope with that amount of water that quickly.
I'm sure that won't stop the media blaming the EA and other government agencies
aye 1mm of rain is a litre per square metre. So if the weatherman says 10mm of rain imagine 10 bottles of mineral water being poured over a small kitchen table (approx 1 square metre) - thats actually a lot of water to deal with. scaling it all up to the size of a river catchment gives you a ****load of h2o to deal with
Looks like here in Carlisle we're in for it again, already some flooding now but defences are due to be breached at 1am tonight. Major evacuations underway, good luck to all. 🙁
I couldn't agree less @moses The solution is not planting trees on high ground.
Suggest you read this. It's certainly not the whole answer, but can definitely play a part.
Good luck squire
Well, it looks like while the new defences in Keswick and Cockermouth have been over-topped, it would have been much worse without them. I'm told that this time there was no release of water from Thirlmere, which added a lot of water in 2009. Fingers crossed that the Main St of both towns will be up and running again much sooner than 2009.
What a day for the new Cyclewise shop to open in Cockermouth..... At least it's well above flood level.
Good to hear you're ok and relatively promising news boxelder. Saw a pic on FB a bit of the road between Grasmere and Keswick has totally collapsed - will be shut for a long while I think.
@zokes, thanks I have done, I agree in that it could make a difference. My gut feel is that modifcation of river flows and flood planes due to development is far more relevant than farming practices and high level tree removal/planting. That plus climate change leading to more intense rainfall thus changing what is "normal"
@box, yes indeed very tough for local business with Christmas shopping season in full swing
water flooded the cellar to about 6 foot but stayed just below the first floor so no real damage done
Lifeboats outside the door so the river kent burst its banks by about 200 metres!!!
Good luck to everyone in the Lakes. Drove down Dunmail a few weeks ago 😯
Amazing Kinder video.
Nature is both beautiful and awful at th same time!
Jambo, which particular
are you thinking of that could have made a difference here? We're talking about a sparsely populated area, not the sodding Thames Valley. Have you travelled north of the M4 ?modifcation of river flows and flood planes due to development
Dunmail road 😯 😯 😯
@moses I think three have tried to point out to him that the Lakes National park is not swamped by developments and river diversions 😯
He has go to be just posting for laughs as no one can actually think that, Either way it pointless though as he needs no facts to form nor maintain his view as he is demonstrating on this thread
Threkeld to Keswick Cycle bridge gone probably for ever!
🙁

Some "amazing" pictures in Carlisle, I don't think anyone truly expected the latest flood defences to be breached! It's not 2005 but it's horrible. One work colleague has been caught out, gutted, she'd just moved in and had just bought a load of furniture, imagine there's a huge number of people in the same circumstances 🙁
Awful. Stay safe!
A591 at south end of Thirlmere (just by Wythburn) has collapsed so there'll be no road from Keswick to Grasmere for a long time.
I saw the picture of the bridge this morning. 🙁
Phoned my former boss in Lancaster, he's had no power since 10pm last night although his more pressing concern seemed to be dealing with his 14-year-old son who was struggling to adapt to a life without wifi!
Managed to get into Ambleside to work today, shop is flooded but everyone ok.
Road in from windermere is passable but still flooded in places.
Absolutely gutted to see the Portinscale bridge gone, that was part of my commute for a few years... 🙁
Be careful out there.
Managed to get into Ambleside to work today, shop is flooded but everyone ok.
What's the Clappersgate / Skelwith Bridge road like? And the little lane (Under Loughrigg) up the back of the River Rothay?
Hope you get the shop sorted soon, good luck with it.
Carlisle floods.
Pooley bridge has collapsed according to photos on Twitter.
Dunmail Raise - our main route south. Crappers.
Going to be a huge amount of traffic disruption and diversions for months. Pooley Bridge at north end of Ullswater has collapsed. A591 at both Thirlmere and Bassenthwaite has collapsed. The road down the side of Ullswater at Glenridding is very severely buckled.
the current government will spend lots of money to remedy the situation and do something to help the peoples and tradesmen who are going to fix everything, just like they bailed out the bankers and are sending planes to bomb syria.Money no object.
Gutted about Portinscale bridge. I doubt it'll be replaced.
Like the bridge over the quay in Workington:-(
My brother stayed dry,but several of his in laws are flooded. Buggery.
Gutted about Portinscale bridge. I doubt it'll be replaced.
Hang on, has that gone too? Portinscale Bridge is the one at the north end of Derwent Water, the little cycle/foot bridge here
This one:
The bridge a few pictures back is this one:
which is on the Keswick - Threlkeld old railway path east of Keswick. Crosses the Glenderamackin River.
Sorry ,misread thread.
very tired but very fortunate, most of our neighbours are flooded in the middle of the penrith, appleby, shap triangle. It was much worse than 2005. thankfully our village is high so the water moves on. i owe a big debt to the man across the road who was able to get sandbags over to us on his tractor . daughter had great fun.

Just seen a pic of the Pooley Bridge missing the start of the bridge. 😯
photo's aren't working
You've linked to a direct page on a private Flickr account that's why.
Make the photos public then select the "share photo" option to get the actual picture info rather than the page url.
Blimey! I know everyone from Cumbria is hard as nails but that looks dreadful, stay safe guys.
Just asking questions about developments inc chanelling/ducting of rivers through towns both locally and further downstream ? There is far more to this imo than current very heavy rainfall and farming subsidies. It wouldn't seem approporate chaps to post jolly pictures of my last trip up in Sep 2012, not been back since as my knee wasn't strong enough for the sustained climbs on foot and/or by bike so spent the holiday tokens on a 3 week trip to Chamonix and Verbier where the lifts can do the climbing and even then couodn't manage that much.
Best of luck to all those affected, flooding is a nightmare
That one is still standing! (it took em long enough to rebuild it last time, so I guess they did a good job)
Almost everything else is underwater. White Water hotel and the Swan; an massive torrent just raging through there earlier. Lakeside hotel had a what looked like a Windermere Lakes cruiser in the middle of the car park 😯
Madness; seems much worse than the 2009 floods
Drove west over the A66 before heading north up the M6, it's just mind blowing the levels of water at the moment. We actually got stuck in borrowdale a couple of weeks ago and afterwards thought, yeah, that's the usual flooding problems done for a while now... Crazy to see the old railway bridge go. Thoughts with everyone affected.
I took a ride out today from Cockermouth to Keswick to see how bad things are.
The A66 is closed due to Bassenthwait lake flooding onto the road, but Keswick is is very bad. Also Braithwait at the bottom of Whinlatter pass has had the road washed out.
Anyone thinking of driving up from that side to Whinlatter forget it!

One of the main bridges into Carlisle centre, always amazes me it's not damaged when there's flooding. Water pressure must be off the scale.
Related: both bridges in Lancaster are currently closed due to water damage, there's no vehicle access from Lancaster city to Morecambe and J34 to the M6 is closed too.
One of the other major routes into town is also closed, they're saying the bridge has been damaged. Think it spent all of last night under water too.
Just seen a list of all bridges damaged/destroyed in Cumbria and it's pretty grim!
one of the local councilors just said on tv a bridge was taken out by a floating mobile home coming at speed down the river.
Watching the news earlier, my heart goes out to all those affected, the amount of water falling is a record, apparently, just unbelievable.
Saw a couple of people being interviewed, one chap very angry, demanding questions be asked about the inadequate flood defences, while a lady was more fatalistic, pointing out that without them, there would be even worse flooding, and where do you stop building the walls ever higher?
14" of rain in 24 hours! 😯
The scale of the damage is mind blowing. Pooley Bridge may have to be renamed just Pooley. It would be nice to think that Westminster might actually put their hands in their pockets and do something to help the many families and businesses that have been well and truly done over this time round. Given that they managed to find nearly £15 Billion for crossrail in London and appear to have no shortage of ordnance to drop in the Middle East, surely helping everyone in Cumbria isn't too much to ask, is it? Or does the north get treated differently from the Deep South? 🙄
55,000 without electric, and another 60,000 almost without power if the water gets into another sub station, one large resevoir polluted and a water treatment works now flooded and not working. Hundreds of people without homes to stay in, its going to be a long hard push to get back to normal.
Here's one from our ride earlier today, this is AFTER the waters peaked & were dropping, yet look how high the water level is on the bridge...

Sanny +1
Actually, making me want to head down for a ride, unusually I've not been down since spring.
Best of luck folks.
Bustaspoke - is that the road after Loughrigg Terrace?
Or does the north get treated differently from the Deep South?
My guess would be if they have Tory MPs, they'll get a bail out, if it's Labour they'll just be left to rot.
The recovery from this is going to be tough.
Once the roads are clear, if you get the chance to visit the Lakes to support local businesses, please do!
My thought are with everybody not in their homes tonight.
A few years ago during the previous floods (2009?) the army built a temporary bridge over the river at Cockermouth. Can see them being called in again for more of the same.
Mate living in Borrowdale has been out on his padle boards - beautiful weather today....
The temporary bridge was at Workington. Tesco also built a temporary supermarket (!). Hopefully the Derwent Bridges will all be ok this time.
Local MP (Sue Hayman, lab) has been in Cockermouth today with Floods Minister (also MP for Penrith) according to her facebook page.
MartinHutch,Yes, it was impassable by cars earlier today as were a lot of other routes when we headed for home..
Don't forget Carlisle - it'll be first in line I'd say.
Given we got a months worth of rain in 24hrs I think the defences have done a great job.
The foods would of hit harder and faster if it wasn't for the defences. Apparently a newsagents on Cockermouth Main Street is ordering news papers for tomorrow, which has got to be a good sign.
Nobeerinthefridge
I was meant to be driving down yesterday for the week! 😯 Hope the guys at Biketreks and KMB are ok.
I was on UK fatbikes facebook page earlier. Thirlmere is impassable due to big landslides.
I just saw the Environment Minister on the telly who was conspicously avoiding answering the question of what action will be taken and when. Obviously no votes in it for him! 👿
I am gutted for everyone down there. As doom mountain says, the local shops and businesses really need our support now. So much of the area is dependent on tourism that it will be a really tough Christmas and New Year for an awful lot of folk especially if they can't open.
Sanny
Sanny, go check out KMB's FB page, they've had a load of help and grafted like **** today and will be open tomorrow!!!
Pooley Bridge may have to be renamed just Pooley.
Or Poorly Bridge.
It's pretty nuts though, to see damage like that. It must bend the minds of the locals who take these things for granted, stuff that's always been there. Fundamental infrastructure. Gone overnight.
Sanny the video below shows the damage to the Keswick to Grasmere (Dunmail Raise) road:
From 50 secs
KMB had about 2ft of water and have been clearing out today.
My guess would be if they have Tory MPs, they'll get a bail out, if it's Labour they'll just be left to rot
I suppose that's why London exports £32bn in tax revenue every year the the rest of the country. 2 boroughs in central London alone contribute 10% of the stamp duty paid nationally with that money being spent elsewhere. In crude terms (and a generalisation) the Conservative constituencies pay the bills in the Labour ones.
Awful day for cumbria I am in Carlisle just off warwick road missed being flooded by about 60 metres so lucky have no power but nothing compared to the devestation around the city
Feel for all you that have lost there homes today stay strong
Rudds - has the water subsided yet from Warwick Rd and Hardwick Circus? Looked terrible yesterday so not looking forward to going into the city for work tomorrow as awful to see the damage caused last time.
Daughter is in Carlisle, just out of flood area (North)but isolated from city centre and work at opposite end(South) No power till 10am and been informed it is likely to go off tonight again. As a teacher she "needs" to get to work in the morning, her partners work was flooded and will be working from home if access to servers can be gained...
Jambalaya - and you think those boroughs could do it alone without the rest of the country? It may sound basic, but the country/nation/state works as one. Those individuals/areas that get rich can't then decide that it's time to stand clear of the rest. Heard of the Welfare State, National Health Service?
Those boroughs pay via the same tax systems as the rest of us. I bet they have better NHS facilities/access, better transport etc. So, as individuals they pay the same and arguably get better.
Trekster - most schools closed tomorrow. If not, the new bypass will get her to Dalston end of town from the north.
Kind of puts erosion to paths from mountain biking into perspective doesn't it! 😛 :sorry:
As soon as roads are open I will try and get up there biking as much as possible and support the local economy. Going to be a lot of businesses hit really hard by this, some probably won't recover. 🙁
Hardwick circus still under water, just walked down and had a look. For those that know it I didn't get past the most extreme edge of Wickes. I'm unsure about Warwick Road, it's still all closed off from around Richard Rose area, generators are running by the sounds of it and there's flood lights up. I didn't want to walk down further in case I pissed anyone off.
4 Play Cycles just missed it and I hope KMB get sorted out quickly. We flooded in 2009 and it really is shit, we were closed for a long time.
Greystone road still flooded upto jesmond st (irvings coach depot), was upto Norman st this morning.
Trying to get to my parents house in Brunton crescent, they're being stubborn and not shifting from upstairs.
Not heard from them since 10.30 yesterday morning so getting a bit worried now.
Penrith MRT organiser didn't want to send his guys back to check they were OK despite them finding out my mothers on so much medication that she'd give lance a good run for his money. They all packed up and went to the Lint.
Apparently my dad took the dog for a walk on the flat roofed garage! 🙄
Monkeyfudger - cheers. Knew people last time who took 12mths to get back in. Nightmare for them.
Sounds very stressful flatfish. Let us know how your parents are when you hear from them. I have a mate with a canoe if you need....
Good news about 4 Play mrV. Hoping the main St isn't devastated this time.
Main street is under water dude. It's receding very slowly, water came up to us. The shop was surrounded by water for a while, looked like we had a moat.

Mate living in Borrowdale has been out on his padle boards - beautiful weather today....
Fantastic video, presume they're his kids? What a great Dad!
Thoughts going out to all you guys and your families.
Well all of my crowd seem to be ok. A couple of people flooded out on Petteril Street, some hastily dug drainage ditches around Mungrisedale and some very nervous people in Armathwaite but that's it.
jambalaya - Member
This amount of flooding/rainfall is not that unusual
Can this be post of the year?
Cumbria Council have just tweeted this:
Victoria bridge now OPEN in #Kendal. Romney Bridge also OPEN. Netherr, Miller & Stramondgate remain CLOSED. #cumbriafloods
Although someone else in Kendal I follow on Twitter was saying "don't bother coming to Kendal, it's difficult to get in and even more difficult to get around".
I saw the pictures from Keswick MTB on Facebook, looks like Amos and crew did an amazing job.
Been keeping an eye on the floods. We are moving up to Cumbria in April next year. Most of the houses we are looking at are around Wigton and Cockermouth (for the schools). We are up in January to look at some properties.. 😕
Got lots of friends in the areas effected, it truly is crap.
Umm.. has anyone heard from Junkyard since he said:
My bike has just had to be rescued from the cellar due to the flood a few feet and rising.
Hope you are okay fella.
Edit: he's alive! Just showed up on the Liverpool thread.
