My girlfriend just called to say that she nearly got blown off Blackfriars Bridge (London). I can tell you for a fact that she would have been exaggerating, but it sounds like she had to put a foot down to stop herself getting blown over which is pretty extreme for these parts

Parents' place is just far enough inland to be outside a severe flood zone. Not sure why it thinks some nearby old quarries are a risk, but not the one 10 meters away. About a mile of farm fields before the north Kent marshes start.

My leaf pile needs a bit of a tidy, but what storm?

TBH high wind always affects you more if you're levitating.

Well I'm working near Blackfriars Bridge and it's simply windy, nothing special - so yes she is exaggerating. Unless she likes to walk along the guardrail or something.

I did have a bit of a chuckle though this morning listening to the news. When there's a storm down South STW's Northerners are queueing up to blather on about how bad weather in the South is over-reported and no-one pays any attention to them and their weather.

Well there's nothing going on down here and the Scottish/Northern storm is headline news all day long. So shut your mahf.

and on the wirral where there was just a bit of wind earlier, this afternoon armageddon has arrived, huge beech tree down in local park, just missing childrens play area, massive flooding at new brighton, 60 million pound leisure and shop complex flooded, people trapped inside, morrisons supermarket, home bargains, a cinema, casino, and lots of cafe and coffee shops flooded deeply, cars floating round car park etc.

then down the road west kirby, cars floated off and smashed into each other lots of walls down,flooding to peoples homes etc.

flange, I too hope that it turns out to not be as bad as predicted, since the EA have issued severe flood warnings for pretty much the whole of Boston and large swathes of the East Anglia and Kent coastlines. Hope it doesn't affect your family, and if it does, hope they stay safe.

In the North Sea, usually the surge builds as it travels south because of the way the winds force it and since there has already been flooding further north I think the EA are taking an (understandably) cautious approach by evacuating areas that are vulnerable (caravan parks, bungalows, close to raised defences) or are particularly low-lying.

Will Jaywick get washed away ? From what i`ve read it would be an improvement

Depending on where they are on the Norfolk coast, they should have been visited by an EA or police officer if they are at high risk. But still worth moving important items upstairs and bottling some drinking water just in case if they are on the coast. Not surprising seeing as a lot of those properties are in a high risk flood zone.
I know many millions have been spent on sea defences but if you get the right conditions ie high tide and wind then it will happen again and again unless the defences are significantly raised again.

I think your more likely to get blown off under Blackfriars Bridge.

Not even a breath of wind right now on the Thames Estuary, the tide is going to be the problem here. The storm churned up the North Sea pretty good it would seem. My niece lives right on the beach at Winchelsea near Rye, so just to make sure she's staying here tonight. Hopefully she won't have to bail out her home this time tomorrow....

Couple of our blokes took our 6" pump to Boston today and couple of gone to Swineshead to help out and some have gone else where.

I must admit a few years ago I thought "yeah right, stealth tax etc", but now it's becoming a reality all over the world. The Philippines, Hurricane Sandy, various F5 tornadoes, two hurricane force storms in a month over here, it's all adding up and it's not even properly winter yet!

I did buy a new kayak yesterday, but, although the Prom was closed, I haven't needed to use it.

I live up a hill just outside Whitstable on the north kent coast. Major alerts in a few places nearby, namely Seasalter and Sandwich. People are being evacuated from a few places. The major concern here is that high tide is overnight and Seasalter has one small road which would make access extremely challenging later on.

I've spoken to my parents. And it's all ok, they've put my Christmas present on top of a wardrobe. So unless the water reaches 12ft above sea level I have nothing to worry about.

Tide has just turned on the Humber where I'm working. About 18" from the top of the sea wall at one point. Glad we didn't have to shut the entire plant down... 😐

Yep, despite Project protesting it was a light breeze earlier.
Back of Morrison's & look at the calm water behind the sea wall!!

Morisons totally flooded out, the loading bay slopes down from the sea wall, and no flod gates, cinema casino, and cafes and shops all flooded.

West kirby was also badly hit, lots of damaged cars walls down, pictures up soon.

Although not flood related, I travelled down the M8/M74/M6 by car today. Witnessed 4 seasons (even had shades on at one point it was that sunny) and unfortunately, I also witnessed 3 lorries on their side.

Just spoke to my parents in Hunstanton who have a shop on the seafront. The boarding and concrete steps in front of the shop have been smashed to pieces. Shutters are badly damaged. 😥
Won't know the full extent of the damage until after tomorrow mornings high tide.

Well I was with the forecasting guys at the EA yesterday and as the model runs for the tide came in it was an anxious time. They don't issue a severe very often because the implications are huge. It will be a terrible time for some people tonight. Be thankful that we have so much better flood defences and warning systems in place than in 53.

We ran an exercise last year that simulated this occurrence, now it's time to get it right for real.

Apparently the River Tees is now on top of the A66 near Stockton and it's impossible to tell where the car parks end and the harbour starts in Whitby.

The increase in reported tornadoes over recent decades is down to increased reporting through better communications, weather radar etc.

That shop is now an estate agents but the one on the seafront under the carpark next to the 3 in 1 -now The Waterside - is still run by them. Before I left Hunstanton nearly 20 years ago I used to work there too.

Enviro Agency haveissues a warning for my road . South coast , Hampshire.
I live 100m from the sea , so will be assembling a grab bag in minute ,just in case . Probably wont come to anything as its very calm here tonight .
Sea defences just rebuilt using 70,000 tonnes of granite to make large groynes to break up the waves .

We live just off the sea front at deal kent. Got an email off the EA last night saying sand bag the doors etc but high tide is not until after midnight so will not know about the damage until the morning

Pictonrd - My mum ran that town shop that had wool but I used to make the burago model displays at the seafront shop.
Apparently there is quite a bit of damage but at least the shop is closed for the winter so they have a few months to sort it out.

She had some in the back too, might have been even longer ago tbh.

I used to ride in the woods at the ringstead end of the downs too. Back then I thought that was mountain biking!

It was! My mates and I built that little bike track in the woods and chalk pit near ringstead on the downs, perfect for my Raleigh Mustang.. I grew up in ringstead on the Peddars Way. Went to Glebe House School.

I lived in Ely for a few years, bought a house on Victoria Street by the cutter and then Chiefs Street. Loved Ely, a really nice vibe. Best bookshop in the uk when I lived there, Toppings.

The Tyne has been quite badly affected.

Pass that section on my commute. Water was jut coming up to 2" as I went past. Caused traffic chaos when they shut the road but they were still letting bikes through.

Unfornunately Jaywick in Essex survived the devastation (no really)

we were called to boston yesterday teatime as water rescue, spent the evening wading waist high through the estates and transporting them by boat to dry ground.

very sad wading through peoples houses watching their possessions floating around. i know theres no good time for it to happen, but itll be a miserable christmas for them 🙁

Hemsby has lost several houses and part of its lifeboat station to the sea, they've been trying to get some funding for sea defences for ages bless them. I was there in the summer and those cliffs are very fragile.
I wonder if Happisburg has been reclaimed by the sea some more?
