Well there appears to be some sort of cyclone in the southern Indian ocean that has a red splodge too.

My wife had to go into work today, despite every other department (local authority) told not to. Because the post that no-one is there to produce has to be sent out.

Anyway she took my volvo rather than her soft-top, and when i chucked a sleeping bag, mat and pillow in the boot she scoffed. Currently all roads in and out of lyndhurst blocked with fallen trees, so she might be glad of my foresight!

I  cycled to work this morning. My office is on the seafront on the South Coast.

It was a 'brisk' if not entirely sensible decision

wind is exciting on the 6th floor. May pop down to the beach in a bit.

Small rant. Had an e-mail from our child's nursery at 10 saying they were closing at 12 and could all parents come and collect their children by then.
Where we are the storm is peaking right now and it's seriously windy out there.

If they were worried about safety of parents, children and staff surely then wait out the storm and close at 4, meaning that parents could see what damage had been done and plan, rather than be out while the damage is happening in the middle of a red warning.

And kids in pushchairs in 74mph gusts. No thanks!

Wife had to drive from work to pick up as small branches etc falling around her, couple of trees down but not quite blocking the road. Potential there for serious injury.

We were supposed to be going to Laggan then on to Nairn. Decided to go to Dunkeld, turned off A9 as all the traffic stopped south of Perth.

Auchterader seems nice. Think we might be here for a day or two because of the snow. No wind here.

Probably not one of our greatest decisions to go away but we have supplies with us, a bed & fridge full of food.

The dog’s pretty happy too

Update - local authority have told my wife to go home at 1pm - at peak of storm. 20 mile drive across the new forest. Muppets!

And another road closed with fallen power line near her so looking even more unlikely she'll be going home any time soon.

From the BBC website:

Do not put yourself at risk to take selfies during the storm, warns James Instance from Cornwall's Falmouth coastguard.

"Your life is not worth a photograph," he says.

Surely he's got that the wrong way round? Shouldn't it be "A photograph is not worth your life"?

“Orange warning in place for most of the UK, everywhere from the M62 corridor, South” 🙄

Half of the UKs population apparently lives in this circle.
https://www.markpack.org.uk/153933/where-does-half-of-the-uks-population-live/

Add in Sheffield, Manchester, Bristol, half of Birmingham, Liverpool, and the entireity of Wales, and I can see a decent argument for "most" - by population, not land.

My mate flies for a living, on a trip with him one time after a robust landing he descibed it as 'positive'

A few positive landings today, but as he said, as long as you can use the plane again afterwards It counts as a good'un.

The approach controllers and flight planners are working hard today. Lots of diversions. Lots going up to Newcastle. One BA from Chicago to Heathrow gave up and diverted to Geneva.

Most pointless guy in the building is my smoking shelter buddy who's the LC tower controller. Zero movements. Quiet shift for him.

Just spoke to my partner who couldn’t stop laughing, she was looking out the window at a woman walking 2 dogs, one a small bug eyed yappy thing that the wind had picked up, she was trying to reel it back in with the retractable lead!
I asked how high of the ground it was? “Nearly a meter”!?

Well, your typical Scottish coastal house gets subjected to this regularly and is essentially battle-hardened already. The chimney stack is probably pretty solid because if it weren’t it would have blown over during any of the storms that winter. And if it looked ropey some local would have gone ‘oh that needs some attention before the winter’.

So we're saying that not only is property more expensive in the South, it's not built or maintained to the same standards either?

It's not the landings that freak me out, it's watching the planes still getting blown about once they're on the ground, that's crazy

Millenium Dome's owners stuck on hold to the insurance because all the operators are busy watching the planes.

Hmmm. I know we don’t get Western Isles levels of wind… but some areas down south aren’t exactly sheltered either.

So you've got people in Scotland saying this is normal and stop making a fuss; and also people in Scotland complaining that no-one's making a fuss about it.

My mind is made up - its the old classic "its only important if it happens in the south east"!  Its also ignoring a large part of the english population

It can both be this and fuss over nothing - it often is with weather events
