We managed a 35km ride this morning up Glen Affric. Breezy, but dry.
Got back to the van at 2pm, and at 2.03pm the heavens opened....
It's odd - there's huge gusts up high and the noise from the ridges/trees is there, but we have been snuggled in the forest away from most of it. Even the campsite is wet but calm.
Once more I'm reminded of nature's ability to provide and help us cope with extremes of weather.
Rescue helicopter of some flavour just flew down the River Don near us in Aberdeenshire, presumably checking river levels and extent of current flooding (which is thankfully not too bad). Rain and wind been battering since about 10:00, but it's just getting going.
Looks like big areas of Aberdeenshire and elsewhere are already without power
I can highly recommend Windguru
I looked at that and the prediction over the next 24-36 hours...all I can say is, I'm glad I don't live in Denmark 😳
Dont know if id beleive that mpa @GavinB I'm in the middle of one of those red splodges and powers still on. I have though told the kids to make sure anything they need charged to make sure its got plenty of bettery left.

It could be out of date, or spread across an entire postcode, when only part of it is affected perhaps? Not sure.
@scotroutes - It was flying at about 50m above the river, so clearly doing whatever it could to stay low. Strong flying on a day like this!
Few aborted landings at ABZ today. KLM made it down safely tho

There've been a few power cuts locally (short lived I think), but so far we've only had a few flickers of the lights. Fingers crossed it stays on. Had the heating on a lot just incase we do get a outage at some point
Powers out all around us. Our streets the only one not had a power cut it seems. Power was out in lots of village and most f the villages west appear to be out.
The rescue chopper was flying up the Dee for a while.out the front of us. Dunno if it's surveying or training
Sumburgh to Inverness flight has given up trying to land at Inverness, and is heading south. Glasgow to Tiree flight has become a Glasgo to Glasgow flight.
Journey home wasn't too bad, lots of smaller branches down but nothing major yet.
Had a flicker of the electric going off at work, then nothing else. It's on here in Aberlour but flickering, two miles either way it's off though.
Not sure if it's Babet related, but 97km winds due tomorrow, Friday, in Liguria....
The van is currently parked up beneath a load of trees.
Think I might park the van in a field tonight.
Sad news, a lady's body has been recovered from the Water of Lee up Glen Esk 😞 On BBC but no details as to what's happened.
More trees down and flooded roads here in local reports.
If anyone's into stats, looks like there will be some impressive river levels tonight. West Water has already beaten it's previous high.
Hope all stay safe up there.

Yeh sepa saying peak heights at 1 & 8am and 5m above normal levels with flood barriers only for 3.5m above normal. More areas identified for possible evacuation now.
@robola - great photo that!
Just taken a screenshot of the wind patterns around the U.K. on Windy.com, and they’re extraordinary, I don’t think I’ve seen anything like the ripples across the north of Scotland before.

I’m also in Angus, body recovered from the Esk yesterday and as I type at 5.50 am the police chopper is over our wee row of houses, close to the South Esk.

Looks like wave, which actually happens quite a lot. Usually downwind of mountains - see it often here (SE of the cairngorms) in a strong NW. In strong conditions the bars can travel a loooooong way though. In this case I wonder if the trigger might be rotor at shear layers rather than mountains.
It's certainly been a rough night here; not as wet as I've seen it but absolutely howling. My carport roof is still attached for now, it's quite sheltered in the usual strong N or SW winds but very exposed in an E.
Duckman, hearing the wind in our house I'm not sure how a helicopter can even fly. It's sounded more windy than wet, but I see BBC have just said that Brechin's flood defenses have been over taken with another potential peak at 8am.
Once it's light I'll probably don wellies and waterproofs and go for a local wander to see what's what around here at some point.
It’s very area specific.
I’m south Angus, just outside Carnoustie and I’d say the rain isn’t as bad as it was two weeks ago. Wind is lasting longer but probably not as strong. We’re more vulnerable to the opposite direction in our village.

Just be careful ! Random but not random. Few years back when I lived near Bradford, someone I know went out for a run after/during a period of heavy rain. He started crossing what was normally a very shallow stream ie your trainers might get wet. Apparently this day it was about 6” deep.
Next thing a wall of water hits him, he’s taken off his feet and swept probably 300-500m downstream smashed against rocks etc before finally becoming pinned against a series of rocks, nearly drowning and having to have major shoulder surgery. His dog died in the incident.
Went back with him later to where it all happened. Could never believe looking at this timid little stream that it could sweep a man away and nearly kill them.
Just watching BBC news disgusting that they are showing people live on TV who are being evacuated
Yeh I just want to see how bad the bits are out to the village and maybe get some goodies from the village shop (2.5miles away).
I've been in floods before and had a flooded house twice (not here) so aren't after adventure!
I know it’s nowhere near as bad as it is in Scotland but there must have been some downpour in the SE last night.
On the commute this morning there was flooded roads like I’ve never seen before around here. I think the rain is finished here for the day, thankfully.
I think the rain is finished here for the day, thankfully.
That's because it's left the SE and is now right over the Midlands and Peak District!
Solid rain since about 3am here.
I’m glad I don’t live in Denmark
My mother is flying into Kastrup today, that'll be fun!
On the commute this morning there was flooded roads like I’ve never seen before around here
Ditto - was like driving along a shallow canal this morning.

Obviously nowhere near as bad here near Derby as it is up in Scotland, but watching tne flood alerts on tne Environment Agency mapgo from amber to red around me, and FB reports of roads flooding and some businesses closing today or not opening.
Getting worse - River Amber in South Wingfield is about to go over. It's already nigh on impassable from Wessington > Oakerthorpe at bottom of Birches Lane. A6 at Rowsley flooded.
Matlock will certainly be flooded by morning. River height currently 1.8m ish - predicted to hit nearly 5m by morning.
mrsmidlife and a bunch of girl guides are camping near Huddersfield this weekend. Yikes.
I've got a motorbike MoT booked in Bulwell at 3pm - there's a non zero chance that the test centre will be underwater by then! River Leen is 1.55m and rising.
Solid rain since about 3am here.
Missing roof has (obviously) resulted in leaks, yey..
That’s because it’s left the SE and is now right over the Midlands and Peak District!
Solid rain since about 3am here.
Yep. The stream at the back of our place is looking, er, interesting. The level is currently just about halfway up the diameter of the culvert pipes that take it under our garden, our drive, both of which are above the level of the house. Hmmm...
mrsmidlife and a bunch of girl guides are camping near Huddersfield this weekend. Yikes.
What does the risk assessment say?
Several roads flooded around Ilkeston now, going to be a quiet night at the 771st Charter Fair.
A52, A46 have closures, various buses and trains not running. Pentagon Island flooded and described as dangerous. Best not build the main roundabout into Derby in a dip by the river....
My wife works in Darley Abbey and has been sent home from work.
Schools closing in and around Chesterfield.
Matlock will certainly be flooded by morning. River height currently 1.8m ish – predicted to hit nearly 5m by morning.
I obviously feel for all the businesses affected, but my mate owns the Tipsy Toad and the crap he's gone through in the past few years.... He has a flood barrier up now, but how effective it will be, I don't know.
It's rarerly the river in Matlock that causes the problem - it's the downflow from the hill and the drains overloading. Building hundreds more houses at the top of the hill is a local bone of contention as the general view is that it's only adding to the problem further
I was supposed to be walking along the flood embankment on the south side of the Humber today, inspecting it. I'm glad I've stayed at home instead!!

Still nowt much in Edinburgh. Couldn't visit my pal in fife as the trains are off. Seems weirdly localised
Very wet in North Wales. Local roads with lots of standing water. MrsF just gone for a dip in the sea.
While we've had a sunny morning in Affric...

Rural south Shropshire. Our house almost flooded this morning. Opened the front door and the water was right at the top of the sill. Cue a couple of hours rodding storm drains, unblocking a drainage ditch on the bridleway we live on and shoveling/brushing water away from the front door. The main issue was a drain that I work hard to keep clear was flowing but just couldn't keep up with the sheer volume of water and was backing up.
All the roads near us are flooded and blocked. Every country lane, the main north south road through the county (A49) and the M54 in both directions. Ludlow is completely cut off in every direction.
What does the risk assessment say?
Bring yer coat!
They've got a pump right by the side of Tipsy Toad now, pumping water from drains into river.
Main roads are shut north from Dundee, so supermarkets up in Aberdeenshire are emptying fast as delivery trucks can't get through. There's folk in far worse situations than not being able to buy fresh food, but it's another layer of complications on a pretty bad situation.
They’ve got a pump right by the side of Tipsy Toad now, pumping water from drains into river.
Good - I think a few local councillors got a bit of heat after the last time it happened
Sun is out North Angus now, what’s that about? I am expecting a cut scene to Ming the Merciless.
I’ve never seen the flood plain and dam on The Avenue country park (formerly the most polluted site in Europe) so full. In the last hour the sluice has been lowered, probably as the capacity of the dam had been reached, water is now rushing in a torrent towards Chesterfield.
Duckman, dry (sky) near Friockheim just now, but still windy as hell. Been for a little wander and we're still marooned atour house worse than the other weekend and lots of tree limbs down.
Next red alert warning for heavy rain over night and through tomorrow isn't going to help those who ar flooded.

Sheffield looks screwed now as well.
I knew that Chesterfield, Ilkeston etc was getting hammered cos I work over that way once a week. Thankfully not there today!
I'm glad the sun is out now and wish the best to anyone affected. But please heed the forthcoming warnings, the front has swung south and is battering the Midlands and Yorkshire but will swing back north overnight. A new red warning has been issued for the Forfar-Brechin-Montrose-Laurencekirk-Inverbervie again from midnight tonight. Hence the authorities are trying to evacuate Brechin in daylight now.
Over 200 flood warnings in England, a few motorways and railway lines closed, and it takes several days for the big rivers to peak so expect disruption for some time.
I wondered why I got passed by about half a dozen emergency vehicles in Horsforth this afternoon.
https://www.itv.com/news/calendar/2023-10-20/plane-skids-off-runway-in-heavy-rain-at-airport
Looking like Sheffield could turn nasty by going home time.
We had to shut site at 11am at old whittington wwtw as river gone from 1.5 to 2.1 during the morning. Cabins could be afloat soon! still chucking it down in wakey. Its grim out take care.
I looked at that and the prediction over the next 24-36 hours…all I can say is, I’m glad I don’t live in Denmark 😳
Just had a chat with a friend near Copenhagen - community out building walls of sand bags to protect houses that have been there since ever.
@ads678 I often ride along that very section you have marked while the wife does the Parkrun on the north bank.
Waves @wheelsonfire1. My wife had to walk across there after dumping her car at the in-laws just down the road from you, as we're on the other (poor) side ;-). A slightly closer look....

Chatsworth Road in Chesterfield...

Seems like most roads in Derbyshire are flooded to some extent.
My normal 12 min drive home took an hour - only one road open into my village.
Yep, Hope Valley looks fairly cut off, anywhere along the River Derwent like Baslow and Rowsley has major road closures.
The river running through mine (thankfully down in a big gorge with zero risk of flooding!) is at least 2m up on normal, can barely see the weirs.
Roads still closed.
Rivers are still high.
Winds still high.
Lots of the standing water has dried up but a new red warning in place from tonight till mid day tomorrow . Much more water and the bridge out from ours will be a no go. It was about 6 inches from breaching on the way home tonight.
Luckily for us we live on a higher elevation in our town (Hucknall - East Mids) than the river and places with run off. Seen a few local pictures and reminds me of flooding here around 10 ish years ago. Also lucky for us that we just had our non functioning soak away drainage hooked up to the sewer due to not being able to dig a soak away within our boundary. As it stood 2 weeks ago our garage would have been flooded for definite, house in theory would have been ok.

Is your weather warning simply Red?

My heart goes out to all the homeowners and businesses affected, but the footbridge in the park shows that flooding off the river isn’t a new problem.
For those interested in Denmark, their meteo agency website has a sea surge/coastal flood forecast which is a worrying
For those interested in Denmark
My in laws live near Sonderborg right my the sea which has the highest level. No reports from them of flooding
Major incident declared in South Yorkshire. The rivers in Sheffield have now thankfully peaked but the flow still needs to work it’s way through Rotherham and Doncaster which aren’t due to peak until tomorrow. Power out in about 2,000 locations. The river gauge nearest to my house broke its all time record by a good half a metre.
Lighthouse on pier at South shields has lost the domed roof.
Also North Shields ferry is suspended due to swell, this coupled with the bus strikes means a long way round dor none motorists.
Hardy students at daughters high school walking home in just shirt sleeves 🙂
@turboflard where in Sheffield are you
diggery, just amber as far as I know so nothing dangerous here.
I am aware of people trying to get in and out and it taking hours and hours to drive 1 mile to head into Nottingham.
Well, Northumberland didn’t miss it. While we’ve not had the red warnings our unfortunate Scottish neighbours have it’s pretty rough. They preparing to evacuate some houses in Rothbury as the flood barriers are expected to breach soon.
Stay safe folks.
For those interested in Denmark
I hope everyone can stay safe, there and here.
@bikerevivesheffield up in Totley, it was the river gauge at Twentywell Lane I was referring to. I’m ok as near the top of the hill but those further down including Totley Brook Road have taken a bit of a hammering.
We're in the middle of some rain but nothing disastrous forecast.
My sister north of Aberdeen had no power last night, scheduled to get it back at 8pm tomorrow.
Even here in the SW the rain has caused issues, the main London- Bristol railway line was closed, near Swindon, with people trapped on a train for at least four hours.
Things not helped by the M4 closed in both directions for most of the day due to a truck going sideways across one carriageway, although unconnected to the weather AFAIK.
I'm reading with some ire the 'story' of various families and houses in Brechin who refused to evacuate.
One heard her elderly neighbour, in a bungalow screaming for help. A couple of families now without power waiting to be rescued.
It seems amazing that anyone would choose to stay, anyone would choose to leave a neighbour in a bungalow during a flood event, and now 'waiting to be rescued'....?
Anyone local able to confirm if some suitable scout hut / school / sports centre was available to shelter in? That seems the only thing to stop people leaving - if they didn't have anywhere to go to.
Yeh the council had organised 'comfort centres' for people to go to with food etc, and they could take their pets too. They are now appealing for B&b,air B&Bs and similar who may be able to accept people for a period of time.
There's a number of places outside of Brechin that have needed evacuations too. Some people have been caught out as they're in places with no history of such a scale of flooding, so weren't expecting it, such as at the Bridge of Dun. That gorgeous old stone bridge is now ****ed 😞
The particular person who was on the news you're referring to was also on the news yesterday refusing to go 🙄
