First thing I was checking before trying to move branches out the way was for power cables, never underestimate the power of stupidity.
I only heard about it on this thread, we don't have a TV and when checking the weather forecast I only look at the local area, which was barely touched by it.
I don’t watch the news on the TV Iin general, I heard about from the radio, reports on social media and the met office app.
There’s really no need to be quite so judgemental. I’m literally just pointing out that many people, for whatever reason, don’t receive these news reports in their day to day lives.
Absolutely. I knew it was coming because I paraglide, therefore watch the wind forecast like a hawk. I don't think any other media I consume would have alerted me to it before this thread started. It would have been easy to miss.
The Tan Hill pub’s having a lock in.

It would have been easy to miss.
Apparently not though.....
Looking forward to a braw midnight paddleboarding at Portie beach
So was it you or the storm which undermined and knocked over part of one of the groynes then? The sea wall must have been busy last night.
and when checking the weather forecast I only look at the local area, which was barely touched by it.
So clearly the comments weren't directed at you
God I ache now... Went out earlier to get a couple of things and saw that I couldn't see my neighbour's house for all the trees, trees that weren't standing up like they should have been.
10 large pines later and we've got the drive cleared. However wielding the big chainsaw for 3 hours with already bust up ribs (crashing bikes obvs.) has taken its toll! Still it's done now and the wind has eased. Hopefully no more come down but Im not holding my breath. They probably lost half the trees in the wood last night. There's at least another 30 big ones down already and when/if the remainder do fall they'll be onto the main road so fingers crossed that doesn't happen.
At least I will not be short of wood for the fires for a little while longer.
Return of power keeps getting pushed back here in CH3. First it was 8pm tonight, then 8pm tomorrow and the latest update says 6pm Monday. Luckily we have a gas hob for a brew and a log burner to keep warm. Also the goshawk pub 50 yards away has power as they are on a different leg so not all bad.
In the 1987 storm we were in the sticks on the end of a long line. Power was out for 10 days I think, phone for 3 weeks.
No electric, water, 4g or broadband for many in our village today + many roads blocked due to fallen trees
A lot of houses being told tomorrow lunchtime at least for power
Looking at the SP Energy Twitter feed they’re saying Sunday/Monday for most people. Hopefully be able to get some staff in from other suppliers that haven’t been affected.
To those without televisons or those who refuse to watch them: there are some helpful apps available on your phone which tell you the weather forecast.
We were out (rural Herefordshire but 2000+ properties affected) from 7:30am. Projected time for power to come back was 4am tomorrow morning. Actually came back around 1pm today with a couple of disconnections since.
Decent covering on the Malverns, light dusting of snow where our daughter is in Brum. Sounds like we got off very lightly reading some of the posts on here. Especially that fella on an oil rig!
Power came back in Todmorden at about 4pm, just as it was getting dark. Which was handy. Whilst I was excited to have found charged power banks and low voltage lights after the house move, Jess the dog was less happy that the only source of heat in the house was the oven. Obviously I had left it on low and moved her bed next to it whilst I went for a ride but she still wasn’t very impressed.
And now our water has gone off.
I can’t see how a bit of wind would effect water, maybe it has to be pumped up to us and the pumps are not working due to no electricity
Many trees down here
But after an extended period of off time a few years back and a number of vulnerable council tennents on the street they buried our leccy line no issues since.
Wierdly all villages surrounding hear appear to be sans power.
I had two roof ladders blown off my garage roof (over a 2 ft wall) and landed in my trailer.
Sheet of tin tried to escape the garage so I did my best rod hull and secured it in peak wind.
Today the ice nearly claimed my car. Was in the next village in one of the estates and a car came round hit the brakes didn't make the corner sailed past the rear of my car and into a house/car on the drive at the house next door.
As I was putting a bike in the boot another tried to follow it......
Got out of Dodge quick.

MrsSteve lived in Sussex at the time of the 87 storm - her village was cut off for two weeks. I was in the Midlands, having just dropped out of poly - the storm was 16th October, on 2nd November I started work in an insurance claims department, overtime from Day 1....
Looks like some poor folk who haven't been restored yet are being told to just batten down the hatches and suck it up until tomorrow (at best, may be longer).
They are working hard.
Culter were told 18:00 tomorrow night before it came back.
Mate in the village just text saying it's back on now. So it sounds like they are setting low expectations and over delivering.
So it sounds like they are setting low expectations and over delivering.
That’s been my parents experience. Were told 9 pm and it came back on before 6.
My Mum spent the day mitigating the lack of electricity by spending hours gardening. Lol.
We were told 4pm, but that’s been and gone, so I shall look forward to 11pm which was the next estimate.
We’re now enjoying the solar harden lights which I’ve been out and brought in 😎
MrsSteve lived in Sussex at the time of the 87 storm – her village was cut off for two weeks.
East Sussex. Roads were blocked for a few days and I seem to remember at least a week off school. Maybe more.
Good evening or morning wherever it is.
I’ve been on scene in the hills trying to get a welfare area setup for villagers. Fortunately power has started to be restored so wasn’t needed. I’m now sat in the village as a response as the station has no heating or power, so I won’t allow my staff to be based there.
Wind is but s breeze, snow has stopped and never laid. I’ve found a wifi to leach. I’ve ran out of food as I’ve a microwave meal. 😂
Originally I was based out of control tonight but I dispatched to scene instead as ops command.
Be a interesting couple of nights.
New update. Next best guess is midnight tonight. Awesome. Joys of semi-rural living.
Well done Drac. Not exactly sure what your role is but it sounds vital and likely to be largely unrecognised by most. Hope you get a couple of days off now to rest up
Lost power at around 10pm on Friday.
No cooker, or phone, until 6pm Saturday.
Luckily we have a log burner, so we had heat. Had friends round most of they day, that only have electric heating.
Loads of damage to the village, some people have lost large sections of their roof, trees down everywhere.
I have never felt wind as strong onshore, they recorded a 100mph gust not far away.
My parents in a Lancashire village lost power at 10 pm on Friday. Still off. The electricity North West site just says "under review" so no estimate of when it'll be back on. Slightly worried as they're mid-70's and dad had a knee replacement a few weeks ago so not very mobile.
Joys of semi-rural living
Try full rural living - we used to have at least 2 power cuts a winter, regularly a few days, once was a fortnight.
Not much to show down here in the South, but I think the strong wind is what caused a pigeon to miscalculate and end up suiciding on the front of my car making a neat 6” hole in the grill. Or at least it was neat once the carcass and feathers were removed.
Apparently, there no way to replace just the grill, it’s a full new bumper job, gggrrr.
Pigeon pie?
It was pretty bad for us at the top of Harlow Hill in Harrogate (the hill that featured in the World's a couple of years ago) so we always get the brunt of the wind from across the Dales - we lost a small tree and I was outside at 10pm on Friday night trying to secure our rabbit hutch with fencing pins as it nearly took off. Thankfully I had over-wintered the bunnies with additional insulation and rain cover last weekend. Also had a door ripped off our Keter garden store so will have to sort out the contents at some point as it's all soaking wet through.
Still no power here. We’re a whole mile and a half out of nearest town but due to location of the grid, our feed “sensibly” runs from further inland through two miles of unmaintained woodland. Latest estimate is 11am but update says engineer not even on route yet so I doubt we’ll be back on today. The way the feed runs wouldn’t be surprised if there are multiple failure points. Village is only 40 houses, so not a priority. Used to power cuts a couple of times a year but been here 17 years and this is the longest one’s lasted. At least the water is back on.
Power and Internet still out (since some time on Friday night) and no estimated time of it being restored, its snowing again and was 7° in my living room around an hour ago. Luckily my mother still has heat and power so may end up down there again tonight (she lives around 500 mtrs away)
Roof damaged in a local pub in Weymouth. Luckily they are opening soon so the jam and gig will be going ahead.
Cheers @welshfarmer it’s my job but I also have family in the area. I even tried to see if I could use my parents as a base but it was no good. I’m an area manager is the easiest way to describe my role, part of which is boots on the ground commander for incidents. 2 shifts left so we will see how it goes.
There are still swathes of the area with nothing but its a glorious day weather wise.
Neighbour refusing to pick up rubbish in shared yard as his bin is fine, despite my holding old envelopes with his name on them.
Just stick them back through his letterbox.
the open sections of the M5 between the Barnstaple and Weston-Super-Mare junctions were a little bit precarious.
I know that stretch well, in fact all of it from Exeter to Bristol, but that stretch is particularly exposed - I had to bring a Smart fourtwo back from the deep South-west once, on a particularly windy day; overtaking large trucks got a bit exciting, having to check there was nothing coming up behind in the next lane over…
To those without televisons or those who refuse to watch them: there are some helpful apps available on your phone which tell you the weather forecast.
Perfectly true, that, I’ve actually got three, WeatherProHD, Dark Skies, and Apple Weather - but because I’ve been off work for two weeks, I’ve not been concerned about what I need to wear because I basically haven’t moved from the house, so hadn’t been looking at forecasts, and was only vaguely aware of bad weather coming - I haven’t even had the radio on, or watched much in the way of news.

Trees were knocked down like skittles along Deeside. Photo was taken near Drumoak.
Looks reminiscent of here...
Some sad news overnight, Twin Pines Mall has been renamed to Lone Pine Mall.
Completely knocked out local transport infrastructure down here.

Also had no power overnight from 6:30 yesterday and it knocked all the traffic signals out on the A33/M4 around Reading.
I believe the storm bought this to us.... and I was just about to pop up there as well!

Nice.
Mate of mine had a huge tree come down just missing his house but smashing a car and blocking his driveway - I'm going there tomorrow to help him clear it
Trails in the Tweed Valley have taken an absolute kicking. Many are destroyed or badly damaged. Forestry has said all hills are closed as no access for emergency vehicles. Will likely take weeks/months to sort. Local bike shop organising volunteers, but weather stopped play today.
Parents now on 2nd night without power.
Elec company rang them 11am this morning to say they were arranging hotel accommodation, they still are waiting
My parents had power for a few hours earlier, seems to be off again but still no water.
These conifers in Glen Ogle were snapped in half by 100+ mph winds from Storm Friedhelm (or Hurricane Bawbag) in December 2011
I was up there a few weeks later and the damage was scarily impressive

Power just come back on, 42 hours. North Yorkshire.
Super chuffed they’ve managed to get it back but comms from northern Powergrid been non existent. One look at the outage map suggests why though!!!
Hearing trails across North East England badly hit, Chopwell and Thrunton particularly bad. A few lads I know been out 2day and found NO rideable trails at either, whole blocks of trees down like skittles and as a lot were unofficial I fear they're gone for good. Sad times if its as bad as they say
comms from northern Powergrid been non existent
We had 2 emails from Norther Powergrid yesterday - presumably because they have our email address from our supplier (I've never signed up for anything directly with them). Of course, had we been affected by power cuts (near Durham - we've been lucky, other nearby villages haven't) I probably wouldn't have seen them until Monday...
This time with a photo...

Now the power has dropped in voltage so only the lower voltage stuff is working. Alas that means not the boiler / CH and most of the lights are LED that don't like the voltage drop. You can tell the more expensive ones though as they're making a fist of it, the cheaper LEDs are not having it at all though.
All of North Northumberland has no power, water or communications. Those that do are on low power and it drops out. We still have some at home.
I’ve been allocating staff to work from home as we’ve bases that have no power or water. I’m trying to get water and hot drinks to the most rural bases. I’ve driven through whole wooded areas wiped out, roads with literally hundreds of trees still partially blocking the roads, It’s snowed and frozen over, roads are lethal
Stay safe folks
I hope you guys who were expecting power to be restored last night are okay.

Really? What are you calling North Northumberland?
I'm in Seahouses and power was partly restored on Saturday, fully restored yesterday.
Mobiles were patchy yesterday but seem fine now.
Internet was back up Saturday.
Alnwick was back up Saturday morning.
I would say you're all East Northumberland, as a casual NE observer relatively new to the area 😉
I hope you guys who were expecting power to be restored last night are okay.
Struggling on. 😀
Had Sunday dinner at the Scapehouse and it was like a community refugee centre! They’ve promised to open at 10 this morning and told us we can all take stuff that needs charging. Several of our neighbours are now booked into the Pennine Manor, and tell us half the village is staying there.
We’re still ok, gas hob means we can get a hot drink.
Updates from Northern Powergrid are a joke.
"Trees were knocked down like skittles along Deeside. Photo was taken near Drumoak."
@aberdeenlune Not far from there - at the RJS helipad the entire woodland area has been removed. like ALL of it entirely flat.
40 of us sat down in the Old Dungeon Ghyll for a 3 course meal by candle light as Llangdale Valley lost all power. Luckily my van ashtray was full of change so could still go to the bar for a drink. Well done to the staff.

`Rothbury, Harbottle, Wooler, Ellingham, Belford, Beal, Chatton and Berwick areas.
Alnwick wasn’t effected much at all just short outages. I’ve spent 3 nights driving across those patches, with no mobile or very little mobile coverage. Airwaves has been off it vast areas of those places, the power even when on has been low. So, water stations have struggled to provide pressure, 3 phase supplies haven’t worked too well either.
Some of those areas have been told it may be a day or two yet. Driving back from Berwick around 4 am I could see villages starting to come back on. It was rather nice in some ways when they were off as you could see so many stars.

Power just come back on, 42 hours. North Yorkshire.
Where is that? I have been getting status updates from PowerGrid all weekend telling me when my service would be restored although it hasn't been off (Pannal Ash in Harrogate). I do know some people further out of town on the Skipton Road had issues though.
There are more important things than trails when folk are still struggling with power etc but most of the trails in southern Scotland are currently closed.
Drumlanrig - Trail Closures & Diversions- Please Read
29.11.2021 Sadly the trails and walks have been seriously affected by Storm Arwen. We are currently assessing the damage and we ask that you allow us to do so and avoid them for the time being. We hope to be able to update later in the week.
Our power came back up last night, half an hour before we arrived home from sisters. House was taking ages to reheat though. Back at work and totally exhausted after two draining days. Could be worse, friends in Stonehaven had their third night with no power last night.
@johndoe just north of Richmond. I know Swaledale, Thwaite way is still off.
Turns out still some streets in Alnwick still with no electric. Schools, pubs and cafes are offering out services including showers.
Callander - both schools closed, emergency shelter in the primary, no power. Friends being told it might be midweek before power is back on.
These conifers in Glen Ogle were snapped in half by 100+ mph winds from Storm Friedhelm (or Hurricane Bawbag) in December 2011
We stayed in Killin - I was at work on Loch Tay south shore. We gathered all staff in the main building and hunkered down. I have never heard wind like it. We then watched skittles as the big trees at work came down outside the window. And by big, some were 1.5m across the trunk. It was 20 seconds from standing to 18 trees down, in one gust.
IIRC, it wasn't highest windspeed but it was the sustained 100mph wind that was the factor that day.

It’s been on the news for days, with the normal drama, then it went to yellow and then red yesterday morning. Loads of reports saying do not travel, keep away from the sea and stay at home. You’ve done exceptionally well to miss it.
I don’t know. A lot of people simply don’t watch TV or listen to radio, and there’s not a lot else in the way of reliable local news. The local rags are mainly junk and covid has dominated national newspaper headlines.
Just going back to the comments about why people didn't pay attention to the weather..
Is it maybe because there are now regular weather warnings about weather that is just wet and windy - amber and yellow warnings, and fairly innocuous storms are named. Maybe people aren't paying attention to the stuff they should notice because weather forecasts are so regularly doom-laden? A sort of warning fatigue, or maybe crying wolf?
Just back in Sweden from Rothbury area. Driving out was terrible. Roads were sheet ice and just managed to get out via Newton on the moor. Sliding into the verge and slipping all over the place. Amazed I got to Edinburgh. Power and mobile signal came back on Sunday at 11.30. Spent two days having whiskey parties by candlelight with the family. House roof full of holes and trees down everywhere. Water out so needed to fetch water for the cows with a loader bucket.
Maybe people aren’t paying attention to the stuff they should notice because weather forecasts are so regularly doom-laden? A sort of warning fatigue, or maybe crying wolf?
Yeah I believe that probably contributes to it.
@Geda roads were interesting with the frozen snow.
Know of plenty of folk still with no power/water/phones since Friday night and have a steady cycle of washing/charging things/etc for them at ours currently. I suspect that several will be off a while yet judging by the numbers affected. At least if you've got a woodburner or calor gas you can get a hot water bottle filled and cook something but there are some people with neither - pretty tedious for them no doubt, and worse for old folk and those with young kids.
Yeah still loads of villages and towns off line, could be a few days yet for them.
Apparently well over 20,000 without power in Scotland still, some remote places being told end of the week...
Oxenhope, West Yorkshire, half the village unaffected, half without power. We were without for about 42 hours. Others are still without. Comms from Northern Powergrid were sketchy. At pretty much the same time on a snowy, frigid but still Sunday afternoob...I was chatting to one of the many guys working away up cherry pickers, diggers etc... while a neighbour was speaking to someone at Northern Powergrid about when the power was due back on. She was told that; as it still so windy, the engineers couldn't start work so please be patient.....they had been busy for the past 5 hours. The wind had died down many hours earlier.
Apparently well over 20,000 without power in Scotland still, some remote places being told end of the week…
id believe that - lotta remote houses round here out.
MY generator is out with friends and so is my camping stove and we have the SIL and dog living with us.
These companies are not really set up to respond to events like this though, are they? bills would be even higher than they are now if we had these guys sitting around for the 350 odd days a year that they wouldn't be required.
its all hands on deck family member is Risk assessment for renewables and being drafted into distribution -
like wise a buddy is project management for substation replacement - hes been doing 18 hour days on surveying lines ( read walking the lines)
We had a lad walking the lines near us on saturday who clearly was used to driving a desk.
They are rediverting resource as far as Risk lets them to get everyone back going from what i can see.
Force 7/30 kt winds forecast for tomorrow around here.
That will probably finish off some of the already damaged chimneys and roofs.
Power restored 4.30 pm yesterday (Monday) so all’s well etc.
Watched the guys in the cherry picker across the moorland from us as I was walking the dog, and headed home in eager anticipation.
