Couple of cm of sleety snow in NW Leeds. Well @p20 sent a photo at 5 am when he went to work, I’m still in bed listening to the wind thinking there is no point rushing up. In-laws were in the red zone in the NE so will check in with them shortly.

Our power lasted the night, though we've no water as a water main burst yesterday and no-one is going out to fix it in this weather.

Windiest I've seen it here (just NE of Dundee), so I suspect we'll be missing a slate or two off the roof as a minimum.

Our back gates have been ripped off in Whitley bay

One way to spend the time I suppose.

Breezy and lots of sleety rain here near Derby. Forecasting freezing temps tonight so club road rides being cancelled tomorrow.

Best wishes to all those waking up to see what damage has been done, hopefully not as bad as you feared.

And Drac+1 - this has been forecast for a few days, looking at the news I can't believe anyone who isn't involved in emergency work thought it was a good idea to be out last night.

Camper has been rocking all night in the Peak along with the horizontal rain lashing the side
Just had a look out and it's now sleet but not settling.

When the 45 year old platform your on 130 miles north east of Sumburgh is rolling about like a wee fishing boat you tend to have a very nervous nights sleep I can tell you 😉

Slushy snow this morning, the kind that turns to ice if the temp drops. Also wind has died down considerable from last night - furniture and toys blown all over the garden.

Humble brag. 😉

Ok here in Pennines, plenty of wind, plenty of snow, electricity intermittent, all roads out of the area shut by snow… but we’re hunkered down with plenty of firewood and food.

Having seen a moan on Faceache already this morning....

... When your power goes off in a storm, there is usually a team of people out in that wild weather. They're physically checking the line, removing trees and debris and then bolting things back together, before other folk flick switches and check no one is getting fried....

It's not some faceless, useless corporation, it's real people out fixing things in the wild wind, snow and rain with thier hands. And that takes time.

Have some grace people.

Power cut here in holmfirth, I think we're the only ones on our street that opted for a gas hob so at least I can have a brew.

To be fair, I think you might overestimate the consistency in which news is delivered to people these days. As an outdoorsy type I generally take a keen interest in the weather, and yet I had no idea there was a storm forecast until yesterday. In fact I only became aware of the severity last night when I actively started looking into the details after some snippets of info peaked my interest. I hadn't seen or heard any news reports on it.

Couple of cm of slushy snow here (northern edge of the Peak District) and definitely a lot of windblown branches but, at a quick glance, nothing too major.

Will head out in a bit, try and have a look over to Kinder.

Pretty sure I've even looked at a couple of weather apps over the last few days and not noticed any warnings etc. I never watch TV news at all nowadays so maybe that's the issue.

Close to Stirling. Front wall came down. Back fence. Every neighbour losing roof tiles. Some sheds blown into the street. Oh joy.

I was in contact with 2 line engineers from SP Energy Networks last night, we decided to abort trying to get things going at work till this afternoon as they were getting at least 10 new failures an hour last night.

Hats off to them working in that weather with big power supply kit is ****ing dangerous!!

Snow is slowly turning to a mushy mess here. p20 reporting a couple of trees down whilst out at work. Was mid video call to my parents on the southern edge of the North York Moors too loose them to a power cut. My Mum had to dash into the garden to send me an old fashioned text to say they were fine as they have no comms in the house with no WiFi. They’ll be fine - they have a camping stove, off grid camper van and wood burner!

I said it would take a named storm for me to embrace the decorating of the hall, stairs and landing…time to make a coffee and good on my words (well that and @p20 started it in the week!).

Pretty sure I’ve even looked at a couple of weather apps over the last few days and not noticed any warnings etc.

MetOffice have had a yellow warning in place for the northern half of the country for at least the last 3 days or so, which got upgraded in various parts in the last 24-48 hours.

Woke up to our back fence lying in the garden in three pieces, which is great as we have potential buyers coming to view the house in less than an hour.

Light dusting of snow and clear skies here this morning in Shetland. Still pretty breezy, but off out for a swim in a sheltered spot in a bit.
Thankfully no damage that I'm aware of.

For a nation obsessed with weather we're pretty crap at taking it seriously.

The warnings were in place for a few days although they were increased to amber and red later on.

If the storm had taken a slightly different track there could have been a significant sea surge too.

As it is there will probably be some localised minor coastal flooding

Missed it all last night here in Cardiff, just a lot of wind noise but nothing else to report. Did have 'fun' yesterday though driving a high-sided big van with no load back from Exeter, the open sections of the M5 between the Barnstaple and Weston-Super-Mare junctions were a little bit precarious.

Hopefully everyone is safe!

Lots of talk on TV and radio news the last couple of days about the first named storm of the year. Yellow warnings out 3-4 days, amber certainly in force from early Thursday and red from early Friday that I saw.

I'm in Arnside just a short hop across the bay from the Lakes. It was pretty scary last night and there's been a few big trees down/minor roads blocked but nothing thaaaaaat crazy. My house/garden seems surprisingly ok.

Wind has dropped considerably from last night and should keep going down but I would imagine there could still be some disruption/smashed trees that could still go over etc.

We can see more sky from our house. The neighbours palace behind lost a couple of rather large trees...One of which a few other neighbours have been telling them since we moved in 8 years ago was an ill tree that would come down some day. It's neatly flattened a hedge and neighbours shed...

Chickens lost their favourite tree in the 'chicken zone' although luckily it missed the coop.

Many fence lost their lives but to be honest I'm kind of glad as now it's an insurance job rather than gradual maintenance having to be done by me.

No power here (about 6 miles south West of Newcastle) either, mother has power but no Internet (she lives less than qtr of a mile away), off at 5am when I went to work this morning. The the northern power powergrid website was working fine and was showing cuts in almost the whole of Northern England so I'm guessing it’s not going to be fixed any time soon

Then there’s fact when it hit as predicted around 3 it was bad then, got worse by the hour, tress down, floods and objects flying around. Yet some how they needed to travel.

Locals with chainsaws have opened all the roads.
I had the drive three cars (one a 4x4) up two icy hills and deal with. A broken wrist and cables on the road. One of the drivers couldn't understand how he couldn't get the 4x4 up the slope but I did and then went back and drove the van up as well. Hint I didn't razz the nuts off it.

I did 90 miles trying to find a way to a location that 8 miles away, used my local knowledge, routes I know from biking and tracks my grandad showed me when he was alive and farming. 5 hours 90 miles later and I exhausted all options, another crew were battling their way in from the west.

Big tree at the bottom of the garden split in two at the base and has pushed over the garden wall onto the pavement. Got about 10m to rebuild when I get home. Bro-in-law is currently chainsawing everything in sight, we'll have firewood for the next couple of years I reckon. It's a shame because I reckon it was a good 40-50 years old.

I don't know. A lot of people simply don't watch TV or listen to radio, and there's not a lot else in the way of reliable local news. The local rags are mainly junk and covid has dominated national newspaper headlines.

For many people, their first awareness of any storm will be when they notice it's REALLY windy outside.

I was fortunate, only one big lump of gnarly old oak came down blocking the road, put my saws to the test. Had to stop halfway through sorting it to go grit all the roads. Going to take a good couple of days to clear all the debris from the roads

You can be snotty all you like folks but many people don't watch the news or listen to the radio any more, and I'm run ragged by three young children. Given how grim most of the news is I try to avoid it as much as possible for the sake of my mental health anyway.

I didn't go out driving in it though!

I'd agree. I don't control the media though.

There's really no need to be quite so judgemental. I'm literally just pointing out that many people, for whatever reason, don't receive these news reports in their day to day lives.

If I was heading out into the hills, I'd know exactly what the forecast was.

This is exactly why it received relatively little mainstream coverage before last night. Having lived both in the SE and the North it’s amazing that ‘extreme’ weather only gets proper coverage if it affects London or the Home Counties. Winds me (and a lot of people north of Watford) up no end.

Turned on Radio 4 this am, first story SA Virus, 2nd some dead American composer. By then pretty much every emergency service in northern half of UK had been working their arses off for last 12-18 hrs responding to mad weather but barely a mention.

I'm currently co-ordinating the Tree Cutting response by SSEN in Highland and North Caledonia.

I'm just off the phone with one of the contractors in Tarland who said that they have seen people cycling and walking over fallen power cables and other members of the public trying to remove fallen trees off of power cables themselves!

Stay away from the cables folks, even if the power is currently off it could be swtiched back on without warning.

Please pass this info on to anyone you see in the vicinity of a downed cable.

And I’m literally pointing out its incredible how people missed the reports.

Did you view them on your iPad by any chance?
