Well, in yet another case of awesome timing for my trips to Scotland, I'm scheduled to fly into Aberdeen with my two kids at 18:00 tomorrow evening and then get a train down to Glasgow.

I'm kind of hoping the flight gets cancelled as I suspect there is more likely to be rail disruption than flight disruption.  Then I'm stuck trying to find accommodation for me and the kids somewhere between Aberdeen and Glasgow.

Wish me luck!

Maybe the plane will be diverted to land at Glasgow saving you the trouble of the train trip?! 😉

One of the campsites in West Wales we visit a few times a year has cancelled its end of season party. It's well known for being exposed but they have had to take down a large industrial event gazebo due to 70 mph winds forecast.

We're going to the Lakes this weekend. It'll have to be low-level walking given the forecast, the bike can stay here.

It's now an amber warning in NW Highlands and Hebrides.  It's going to be very windy up there but they are a lot more used to it.

We are having a party on Saturday night for my wifes 50th. Its all arranged to be outside!!...

We're in Leeds so shouldn't be as bad as further north but still screwing our plans up. We'll manage, but could do with it not blowing a gale and pissing down....

I don't want to be funny about this, but you know it's October in Leeds? Or are we talking about somewhere called Leeds in the Cote D'Azur? 🤣

Daughters first full weekend at uni and she has booked on a day trip to Windermere for freshers. As she herself has just said "I know how shit it is in the rain, I may not bother"

Couple of work colleagues are walking the WHW. I will be interested to hear their plans

I've booked a weekend in a cabin with my wife for our wedding anniversary.  Kids at home with my mum.  1st weekend away together without them since oldest was born.

Cabin is Brecons-ish.  We've booked BPW for us both tomorrow/Friday - her first time riding there - exciting! 🤣

Wouldn't be devastated if it was closed/vouchered, but I don't know if it's going to bad enough until after 4pm.

Had someone (non-islander) tell me today it shouldn’t be a problem “It’ll just blow through” - forecasting 70mph+ winds for tomorrow, but he seemed to think weather is some sort of conspiracy. Ferries to/from Oban cancelled from lunchtime tomorrow and probably all day Saturday.

The first wave of rain before the main course is just arriving now.

That should come through overnight, then there'll be a period of suspicious calm before the main dose of heavy rain arrives sometime on Friday lunchtime.

The cabin could indeed be rockin'. Wind obvs.

Reasonably windy already tonight but nothing out the ordinary. Supposed to ramp up overnight with the yellow warning kicking in at 12noon (rain) and 3pm (wind) where we are. Eldest supposed to be doing outdoors stuff in the Ochils after school tomorrow, I suspect that might be called off...

The ROC Triathlon in the Highlands (Kinlochleven) cancelled earlier today.  The run course goes up onto the top of Ben Nevis and back. Would have been a disaster if its half as windy as predicted.

Yep, even if the plane goes there's no way I'm getting to Glasgow tonight.  On the bright side there seems to be a fair number of hotel rooms available but no point in booking anything until I'm on the tarmac in Aberdeen.

At least it's too windy for drones...

Latest forecast shows the strongest winds coming through early evening. Head west and the gusts are predicted at nearly 90mph, which are the kinds of winds that tear roofs off. Hoping we don’t get a power cut.

Worth firing up the YouTube channel for your local airport and watching some of the decidedly dicey landings going on now.

It's surprising how much an A380 can get blown around the place. They can also generate their own personal cloud from the amount of spray thrown up when they put on the reverse thrust!

We’re right in the middle of it now, wind speeds in excess of 60mph and the whole house is shaking - another hour of this before it starts to abate. We’ve also got a 1.5m storm surge on top of a high tide - if we’d had a spring tide of a metre higher the flood protection barriers installed last year might not have been enough. Hopefully the power will stay on. There’s going to be a lot of trees down most are still in leaf and the ground is saturated.

That's pretty frightening, we had something similar earlier this year, a wind so strong it absolutely roared, fortunately our roof remained intact. Hope all's well.

The house is timber framed with a steel portal and is designed to withstand the wind and weather in these parts - our lounge is Right under the roof so it feels and sounds a lot worse.

The lifeboat is out on a shout due to a yacht slipping it’s anchor - know some of the folks out there so hoping they’re not out there too long.

Power out in a few place and lots of trees down.

Bit breezy and on and off heavy showers in Manchester. Some debris about. Took it easy on M60 earlier in the van. Son is on nights in a HGV tonight - it's a double decker trailer so 16ft high (just under 5m). Even more of a challenge as he passed his HGV a month ago.

Lakes looks to have had it quite badly, various flood warnings in place, a fair few road closures due to flooding and/or fallen trees.

Here (northern edge of the Peaks) seems relatively clear but we're in a bit of a dip and yesterday was pretty constant rain. Never torrential but just unrelenting. Can see the next band of rain on the rain radar app drifting southwards towards us now...

Given Yorkshire is 300 miles south of where the storm hit that is hardly surprising.

I wonder if that weather station survived the night, or just has a delay updating? Locally the observed weather is available all the way to the current time.

My son has recently passed his HGV licence. He was on nights last night going to Rugby and back with a double decker trailer - 16ft high - about as big as you get. Very sketchy on the way back with an empty trailer.

Depending on how much space it has, and how much of the root ball has pulled out of the ground, a tree can often survive if the roots are covered over. Willows do it all the time, and I’ve seen really quite big trees carry on so long as there’s a fair amount of root for the tree to draw nutrients from.

Admittedly it’s got plenty of water available, but that willow above has had bit of a hard life!

Fingers crossed, your apple might survive ok.

Not been anywhere near as bad as the north has had it, but it was pretty windy down here, steady 22-25mph at ground level, went along to the club this morning to get some practice in before we start archery indoors in a couple of weeks, didn’t even set my bow up - there were a couple of people already there, and the wind was directly in our faces, the gusts were blowing the arrows off the rests on the bows, and the target bosses, which are a timber frame with foam packed in, about two metres high, and a bit over a metre wide, had to be staked down to stop them being blown flat! That could result in around £100+ worth of arrows being trashed! We’ve had one blown clean over the brook that runs down one side, and into the next field in the recent past. They aren’t light, either.
Everyone decided to call it a day and put everything away where it’s sheltered.

Is there any point pushing it back upright with a stake to support it, and letting it re-root?

No point in trying to upright the tree but value in piling soil against the root plate so it doesn't dry. Tree may well phoenix and is a form of veteranisation. Bit of soil mounding where limbs touch the ground may also help suckering.

Our power came back on a couple of hours ago after 30 hours - even the mobile phone network was down.
Wind speeds were phenomenal, exceeding 100mph.  Our polydome greenhouse got flattened fortunately it can be rebuilt with a new cover. Lots of trees down - there are quite a few mature oaks simply toppled. Tops of trees simply snapped off. Quite a few locals saying it was the worst storm they’d experienced in their lifetime.

Both the lifeboat and fire crews were out Friday night. Lifeboat was called to assist a yacht dragging its anchor / risk of grounding. The yachtsman refused assistance unless towed to Oban, despite having an injured hand, meanwhile getting nearer to shore so the smaller, Oban lifeboat also had to assist and managed to tow the yacht to a safe anchorage. The crew got back safely at 1am after 6 hours - let’s just see some crew members weren’t entirely happy with the conduct of the yachtsman.

Saw that the Lochaber MRT were out on the Ben both Friday and Saturday to carry off exhausted walkers - WTF goes out in those conditions/ with that forecast?

Some commenting that the level of local warning were inadequate and underestimated the severity - no advance text warnings were sent. This is the second severe storm this year and the resilience of power / phone network has shown to be inadequate. The power could have come on 12 hours earlier but there was no-one with the authority available here to restore it. Only one of the 3 mobile masts here has a back-up generator - both ends of the island 50 miles apart left without coverage. Those few people with old copper landlines were able to make/receive calls.

On a tangent, daughters’ school does a charity of the year thing. No. 1 put in the local MRT as her nomination as the demand is anecdotally going up and up.

Was chatting to another parent at some kids’ thing and he was telling me a horror story about a work crack at the Yorkshire three peaks, where one of the participants turned up dressed in black on a hot day, and was seen cutting the labels off her boots in the car park at the start line. Team leader’s face fell and he said to someone quietly that there was no way they were going to make it round…

I think the RNLI version contextualises it more appropriately

^^ fair enough. I can see why the guy didn’t want to abandon his boat, an act that would almost definitely have resulted in it being wrecked, and in the end he made a decision which resulted in both him and his yacht being fine, but that’s down to a degree of luck, and in hindsight I guess.

On the other side I can see the frustrations of the crew, plus the fact that because of his decision, 2 lifeboats were tied up for excess time where they may have been needed elsewhere.  I would hope that the yacht skipper will be making g a meaningful donation the the RNLI Station…
