3rd instalment of "homeless in 3 months"

After a busy Friday of viewings to both buy and let and meeting with a planning specialist regarding our self build options we ended up with a lovely little house complete with Rayburn, open fire and amazing views in the tiny little village where we are trying to build our barn conversion on a 3 acre plot we use for farming.

Bad news is no parking and not a lot of storage and less room that we have now. A lot of stuff needs to go but we are going to need storage, have a few options so far:

1. Local storage place at £5-20 a week
2. 20ft container for £20 a week + delivery on our land (clad it to make it blend in)
3. 20ft container bought outright - £1500-2000?

Also going to need storage for ideally 2 or 3 bikes outside at the new place so thinking of one of those metal sheds - any suggestions other than Asgard?

Don’t buy a shipping container ;unless you intend to keep it) as you won’t get the resale on it.

Meaning that renting space probably cheaper.

Whatever you do, remember that you need to make sure that the cold & damp do t get to your belongings.

I just did the usual thing of finding a nearby storage business and doing a deal for a minimum committed period. Worked out well but we’re still using the bloody thing over a year on..!!!!

I've had stuff in a 20x10 ft storage container on one of my sites for nearly 2 years now. Thankfully I'm not paying for it. However you should be able to get them down to 12 quid a week. Where are you based?

Do yourselves a big favour and take it to charity shops/eBay/tip. Anything you haven't/won't use in a year, you almost certainly don't need anyway.

People have so much useless crap these days.

Container would be a one way job if you want it to be water tight and not rusty. My old man paid just over 2k for his. You might not get you money back as such but second hand container values change by the day according to what's available on the market so you may not lose out. A one way should have a current insurance certificate meaning it can be sold back to the market when you are done. I think.

Downside of a container is security, rural crime being what it is self storage may be the better option. That said you could keep the container to use as a shed afterwards. YMMV

Definitely having a clear out but I have all my car tools and my workshop/lab stuff and a few items of furniture we want to keep hold of for the new house. The Ikea stuff will probably all just go and we can buy new for the new place. Sofas are a big one, I have a nice leather set that is not worth much to sell but I want it for my new office.

Annoyingly we have a full set of very good condition white goods we have bought over the past few years, all Bosch and all middle/high spec not the cheapest. Admittedly the dishwasher would be going as the new one will be a built in but the washing machine and tumble drier would be going in the utility room so no need for built in but tbh if we store them for a year or so I suspect they will end up all nasty inside so makes more sense to just sell them all and save the hassle of moving them into storage. When the time comes we can just get some nice new ones delivered right to the house and save me the trouble.

All that aside we do need to store the small tractor somewhere, although I do see this as an excuse to buy a proper big one with loader 😀

Well local storage place is out. Popped along today and they have nothing available.

Current favourite is an old 7.5T horsebox I saw for sale not far away for £1k. We could use it as accommodation during lambing and move it round the plot a bit easier as it is still a runner. Could also be useful moving stuff around the farm when it's not storing stuff.
