Im driving down to Solden in Austria in August with the family (kids 3 & 10) and looking for a nice place to stopover for 1 or 2 nights on the way back up.
I'm looking to avoid the major cities and not too keen on France (although open to suggestions), so can anyone suggest anywhere nice? Prefer a small town.
Stoping in the Black Forest on the way down so want to avoid that area again.
Thanks
The Swabian Alb is very nice but even closer to Solden than the Black Forest so may not be far enough towards home. Based on your user name then the Museum in Teck would be worth the visit, and would give plenty of pointers on interesting places to visit in the area.
Also the Sandstone area of the Pfalz to the East of Saarbrucken is worth a visit. And if you want to get a bit closer to home then the area around the Ardennes in Belgium is certainly worth exploring, especially taking some time to visit the great Caves of the region.
Where are you catching the ferry?
I usually stop around Luxembourg, nice city.
Careful where you stop....

Martinhutch - Getting the channel tunnel, not the ferry.
Thanks
Depends what your kids are into. You could stop near the German/French border and take them to Europa-Park for the day. By far the best full family theme park I've been to. You can get a decent hotel in Strasbourg for not much, or perhaps stay somewhere like Freiburg.
Speyer Technik museum. Buran space shuttle, clamber through a complete U6 submarine and Boeing 747 displayed in the air, on stilts, at a crazy angle with metal tube slides from fuselage back to ground level. For the kids obviously 🙂
Hotel on site is OK, also a compound for motorhome campers.
Also sister museum at Sinsheim.
Great Idea - Thanks
And every other shop on Speyer main street is an ice cream parlour 🙂
