I like True Grit (not seen the original, no fan of JW).

I also like how this is turning into a "good remakes" thread.

Mine: Cape Fear.

Talking of films you might not have known were a remake – ‘Airplane’ is a remake – pretty much scene for scene and word for word

I did not know that, can't believe I've never seen that before.

Suspect that the In Order of Disappearance remake starring Liam Neeson may well be a sack of poo but I'll wait and see.

True Grit?

It's a good remake he's not a very nice guy in the remake and it's not John Wayne as John Wayne.

A remake of Sabrina the Teenage Witch?

Ohhh, I do hope it is as good as the “original” tv series... I remember watching this in bed on Saturday mornings all those years ago..

👍👌🍆💨

I agree fully with the OP. Its soooo lazy and pointless. Asshats indeed!

The remake of The Wicker Man with Nic Cage was a particular low point in cinematic history.

Robert Zemeckis & Bob Gale are on record saying no BTTF remake, while they're still alive & they're looking into ways with their estate to prevent it from happening after they are dead.

As far as good remakes - I enjoyed The Thomas Crown Affair, The Fly, The Thing, The Crazies, The Jungle Book, Little Shop of Horrors, Heat....

However there is a massive difference in taking a movie like a star is born & Ghostbusters in terms of remakes

Actually, that could be pretty good I reckon.  Originals look dated now.

Van Gough's sun flowers could be improved by taking a photo of some sunflowers too?

I think re makes can/could work if they change with the times or the story was told differently. So they could re-boot Bond with a female Bond, the opening scene of Casino Royal where he shoots his predecessor would work just as well. The rest of the character can stay the same (not a million miles off the assassin in killing eve, which was written by a woman). Or plenty of scope to tell stories from another character's perspective or just swap a few roles around.

So so many great gifs though. It’s worth it for “No, Not the BEES!”

I think the Coen’s True Grit exceeds the original. Then again I tend to like their films and Jeff Bridges. I also think John Wayne is the equivalent to Will Smith nowadays. Just plays himself. So I may be a tad biased.

IT (although not technically a remake) is far better than the TV movie imo.

I'd go further than that.  I think a good remake simply has to have the same concept, but re-imagined.  If it's just a re-shooting of the same actual story then it's boring.  You know what happens, for a start.

Ghostbusters for example (not a terrible film IMO) - four fringe researchers start a ghost capturing agency - that's it.  The films and even the characters are pretty different.

Back to the Future remake could simply be an entirely new movie in which someone with a flaky time machine gets stuck in the past.  For added lolz they could get stuck in 1985.

Totally agree with this. Anyone who likes the original films doesn’t like them for the magnificent acting, or for the chance to watch Michael J Fox almost fall over (but not quite fall over) while running away from someone.

Its the concept of the story, and the feeling that they had when they watched the originals that people enjoy. Capture that correctly and add to it,  I would be happy for it to be done again.

Just not a scene for scene remake, as that would be fairly pointless.

There are plenty of spoof BTTF 4 clips on YouTube, by golly even I got all excited and posted one on here a year or so ago.. I got slated for it, rightly too.

I would want to see a BTTF 4, I reckon there is plenty of expansion left in the original storylines..

Doesn’t need Emmet nor Marty, though a guest appearance would be nice. No need to replicate the original characters, there’s plenty of other angles where the film makers could expand the storyline.

Don't understand the dislike of John Wayne! Yeah he's just John Wayne but films like the old True Grit, Red River, The Searchers.. he balances out the other characters brilliantly.. and man the number of films he made is quite amazing. Legend. Proper legend. Wooden as hell though, yeah 😀

Now that's interesting because of all the films he has made it was the most middle of the road. (Still great by anyone else's standards!)

The Coen brothers basically just remade the same story multiple times with different locations and casts. There's a bag of money, anyone who chases the money comes to a sticky end, the hero doesn't chase the money and lives happily ever after.

Aliens and Terminator 2.

Prefer the originals. Alien is a bleak sci-fi horror and despite being made in 1979 doesn't feel particularly dated even today. Aliens is okay but it's a bit 80s action hero and some scenes date badly (extended cut especially).

T2 similarly and original Terminator is a raw classic to me with a bleakness about it. T2 is more action fun special effects with annoying kid.

Not that I don't like them. They're great films, just not a patch on the originals to me despite the bigger budgets.

3 pages and no one has mentioned Get Carter...…….FFS
they even gave it a happy ending.

True Grit, not a nice man … I guess being a bounty hunter could do that to you.

John Wayne... the Nick Cage of his time..... probably could act if pushed.

Hols 2 -

The Coen brothers basically just remade the same story multiple times with different locations and casts. There’s a bag of money, anyone who chases the money comes to a sticky end, the hero doesn’t chase the money and lives happily ever after.

May I suggest No Country for old men.

It's gone on for years. 'Yojimbo' was made into a 'Fistful of Dollars' and then 'Last Man Standing' Seven Samurai became 'The Magnificent Seven'. 'The Hidden Fortress' is re-made into 'Star Wars'...Even 'A Star is Born' has been remade what, 4 times now?

This IS the Hollywood model and has been since it started, if you've only just realised, you've not being paying much attention.

There is a difference between a sequel and a remake. Aliens sequel was not a remake. The reboot of Battlestar Galactica was better than the original. All of star wars is shite, apart from empire.

Really? 10,000 years ago, most Britons were black*, and there were traders from around the Mediterranean including the phoenicians, coming to Britain and trading with the Cornish anywhere from 1500-300BC. The Romans brought black slaves and troops the Britain, plus there were the Crusades going on, and Moors who held part of southern Spain.

Remaking The Intouchables. Without subtitles and I think set in in the US. My favourite film. My son is outraged. Ironic as None of the Tired clan wanted to watch it originally, but I said give it five minutes and if you don’t like it, I’ll turn it off. They’ve all seen it more than once.

18 episodes (plus deleted scenes and bloopers!) on 5 DVDs labelled "the complete series"

quite enjoy but mainly for the nostalgia of gross sexism in the workplace and smoking in pubs etc [stw is now a smiley free zone]

Spider-Man not a remake either. Just Marvel helping Sony to make proper films involving the web slinger.

No!

They cannot re-make the fresh Prince as some sort of coming of age/class/race commentary, especially without the comedy and most importantly without Will Smith!

It's just lazy at this point, it's not "re-imagining" it's just rehashing.

Certain things are in and of their times, if a tale or trope is worth retelling then write a new story to do it... I'm with the OP on this, any writer who drafts a script for one of these should be drummed out of the guild.

Out of them, only Home Alone was any good. But even then the first hour and a half is slow and it only gets going at the end. By modern film standards, the old version doesn't have the constant action entertainment that kids like.

Amazon funded TV series in development right now, so no need to wait that long - probably be out in a couple of years time.
