This popped up on Facebook and brought back memories.

Back in '85 the threat that student grants would be cut provoked the students at the Edinburgh College of Art to occupy the college and eject all the staff and management. We slept in the college for a couple of nights, got on the news, then apathy prevailed and grants were lost forever.

The picture shows me and a couple of mates giving the Principal on the other sides of the gates the heavy stares while the SRC denies him and his Ferrari Dino access.

We used my Citadel bike lock for the gates. I lent the SRC my key which they broke inside it, so the sculpture dept had to cut it open.

The student who took the picture Graham Macindoe went on to become a photojournalist in NYC.

Happy days.

Not me, but I worked at London College of Communication (part of University of the Arts London) where students in 2009 did a sterling job of sit-ins spanning days, occupying the Head of College's office and combatting paid for security teams (muscle in bomber jackets) because of course closures to successful courses and inadequate (and brutal) management. Many talented students involved too who will undoubtedly go on to great things.

Mid 80's went to that London for student demos, we were so carefully managed on the first year I went I'm sure no one knew we were in town.

The following year, someone organised for groups to split off and go in different directions, the look on the policemen's faces when we just turned off down an unofficial route.

Our little band sat on Westminster Bridge for a couple of hours for which several were arrested and the rest of us dragged onto the pavement and treated to a personal visit from Dr Marten.

Amazing how important and powerful we mistakenly believed we were. Happy misguided days.

Our department was an annex of an annex of an annex - 2 miles from the rest of the art/design faculty and about 8 or 9 miles from the main uni complex. News of revolts tended not to reach us until after they've happened, when a note would appear on a notice board thanking us for our support.

Once we were gathered together and encouraged by the union rep, on a rare visit, to occupy our canteen (or boycott it, I forget which). He had to be reminded that the only issue we'd ever raise with him, ever, is that we didn't have a canteen.

been on a few

I rember going on the criminal justice rally

Got a bus at 2 am to get there on time Bus was half full of crusties half full of students. the former [ chemically enhanced]decided we needed rave music for the entire journey and when folk asked to sleep they went ape about their rights and told us to **** off- it hey were not very luvved up tbh.

There was fight in a service station [ not me mind]before we got there but we got silence

I realised that some folk were such utter arseholes we did need to legislate against them as they knew their rights but could not give a shit about their responsibilities to anyone else or anyone else rights
Half heartedly protested

the speech given my Jerry Maguire iirc was very moving but would break the swear filter if i typed it

Did few sit ins as well at college and Uni

I stood up against the Criminal Justice Bill, the Nazis, and a bypass. I have a vague recollection of having marched in favour of the legalisation.

I'm not sure how far my causes have changed.

I think I was number 300,000 and something marching under the counting banner at the Countryside Alliance march.

That counts. Doesnt it? 😉

I was at a further education college 87' - '89 and the student union got us to go on strike from lectures so as to go on a march. We mostly went to the pub and then the SU were angry that they were pretty much the only ones that turned up. I wasn't against the loans but they were small back then with a decent grant still.

I went to every demo going at Middlesbrough Poly, whatever it was about, as the SU provided a free lunch of lovely egg sandwiches. My favourite was occupying the Dean's front lawn at his house where some wazzock was running around with an Anarchist flag (I think they had ham sandwiches at that one).

Nope. I was a block release apprentice and it was made very clear that any action like this would see us out of a job.

Still, we had sixty quid a week to spend which dramatically reduced our political disagreements with the uberlords.
