Stow-ick? Or Stoyke?
I'm in the former camp, but I heard someone say the latter earlier today, and it sounded most odd.
That's hilarious - my youngest pronounced it the second way because it's the name of a character in a book and he had never heard it spoken. I corrected him. It's certainly the former...
Love the Hawick option although I disagree.
Stow-ick unless you are talking about chemistry* and then it is stoyke. *Because stoichiometry is just too much of a mouthful.
Thanks all. I knew sort of knew stowick was right, as thats how it was always pronounced when i was a kid, but confirmation is good.

Crickey, if I’d heard someone say “Stoyke”, I’d want an explanation, I wouldn’t have the foggiest idea what they were talking about! Stoic, on the other hand, I would know instantly.
I remember seeing a photograph of a sign on a door, which said something like “Warning, this door is alarmed”, underneath someone had added “but stoic”.
Which made me laugh.
Never mock someone for weird pronunciation. They probably learnt it from reading a book 🙂

Definitely stow ick. However, I'm convinced the pronunciation of some words is simply wrong. Omnipotent for example. It really should be Omni potent (as if it was two words), not the way it is actually pronounced. Always annoyed me after learning that word through reading books as a nipper.

Stow in the Scottish borders is pronounced with the ow as on "ow (shortened ouch) that hurt"

Full disclosure; it was my wife, therefore the chances of a sensible explanation are zero 😆. She said it once previously about 2 years ago, and I convinced myself I'd simply misheard on that occasion. Apparently not.
