At last, the judges for an important award think 'outside of the box' - god how I hate that phrase but it's fit for purpose here.

Great. Alex de Rijke was completing his DipArch when I was an undergrad. He was a clear star then, and hasn't disappointed since.

Making a virtue out of a vice ? I am delighted its been recognised and to see the pier rebuilt but I can see why it’s called The Plank. Saves money not having much in the way of structure.

You couldn't be further from the truth - the vast majority of the budget is IN the structure. Its very poetic, and will be interesting to see HOW it does become used in the coming years.

It really does nothing for me.

I think the prize is more for what it is and what it means for the community, rather than how it looks (even though it looks ok IMO).

The UK can be so backwards looking when it comes to inventive architecture. At least this was saved from crumbling into the sea like the rest.
It’s almost like “if it ain’t Victorian and Brown, it ain’t going in my neighbourhood”

Jeeze, celebrate it ....

That isn't the reason it does nothing for me, I simply don't see it as being particularly outstanding. Yes, it's good lateral thinking in how to use a space, but the award is for architecture, not lateral thinking and as a piece of architecture it doesn't inspire me personally.

It's like you've had a fire in your beloved campervan, so the insurance people take it away for repair and when they bring it back it's a flat bed truck.

johndoh - but the award is for architecture, not lateral thinking and as a piece of architecture it doesn't inspire me personally.

Architecture isn't just ascetics.

I like it. Boscome pier has similar clean lines and 'emptyness'; it feels spacious & really lets you connect with the sea. It's very peacful. compare to Brighton - it's all fair games, karaoke and drinking grockels!

I had to Google that word. And after Googling it, I don't understand what you are trying to say 😕

Was trying to say aesthetics but wasn't concentrating and fudged the autospell.

Architecture isn't 100% about how the building looks, it's also about how the building connects with it's surrounding environment and the people that use the building.

No way - I've met Alex de Rijke! The colour of his (usually very bright) glasses always match his trainers 😆

That explains it - I was wondering why you were saying architecture isn't just about hermits LOL!

Personally, I don't like it. £14M for a blank space which will require constant funding in order to host stuff. Boscombe pier IMHO is far better, the interactive musical instruments, the golf with fish food balls, it isn't overdone, but it is fun and imaginative.

I do hope they addressed the fire problem at Hasting pier, otherwise it's a big pile of firewood 😯

And the caravan wasn't loved, and hadn't been used for two years before the fire. And the flatbed can host a lot of cool public stuff on the back.

(not the pier, just an example of public use of flatbeds for entertainment)

Any different to any other wooden (or partially wood) structure?

Although without buildings if someone was to try and burn it down the fire wouldn't spread as quickly if at all.

I live a few miles from it, and go on it often. There have been gigs, open air films, circuses, nightime lit up bike rides and it is absolutely magnificent. It triggered my partner and I starting a bit of a quest to visit as many piers as possible. But still my fave. I voted in the public vote for the RIBA prize.

The photo in the linked to article is pisspoor. Lots of much better ones on the pier's facebook group.

The pier is in an odd place - not central to Hastings, or the old town, or even St Leonards, in the way Eastbourne or Brighton piers are, and it was dying a seedy death.

It is a huge improvement from the old pier. Please come and visit it - then judge the way it links in to the surroundings.
