My daily commuting stuff is minging and really stinks.
I've cleaned my helmet in normal shampoo, no-tears baby shampoo, fairy liquid, removed pads and bunged them in the washing machine - still stinks a day later.

My gloves - same again, still stink.

What will nuke the minging stinkiness without having to bin perfectly good gear?

Milton sterilising solution? Freezing them? Microwaving them? Lynx Africa? Fabreeze?

Another Halo user here too, brilliant stuff. Always stock up on it whenever it's on offer on Ebay/Amazon.

Thanks all

I'd never heard of the stuff before but it's available from CRC and gets good reviews.
Have ordered a 1lt.

Hang them outside on the line to dry. The UV in sunlight will kill the bacteria that makes the nasty smells.

Bottle of Dettol, or supermarket own brand equivalent for half the price.

Follow instructions for adding to washing machine - basically dilute it before chucking some in the powder drawer, add powder and wash as normal.

Repeat every few months when it gets mangy again.

Put Formula H pet disinfectant in the prewash cycle.

Oh, and run a washing machine cleaner on a boil wash cycle. This'll get rid of the things growing in your machine that will add to the flavour of your clothes.

Assos cleaner. Seems very expensive but you need like a teaspoonful per load.

Makes you wonder what Assos know that Persil don't - it's that good.

IME, Halo is the best for technical stuff. Napisan is effective too but doesn't leaving them smelling or feeling quite as nice.

(Not tried Assos)

We used Milton anti bacterial stuff on nappies and it ruined the PU coating on some of the wraps. I'd be wary of using that kind of thing on outdoor gear just in case. Napisan may be different, may be the same stuff.

Napisan

I read that as Napalm which while effective at removing the smell it would also remove the kit.

Still...new kit...just saying....

Napisan is a good call it gets nearly everything out of the kids school polo shirts (who thought it was a good idea to give primary school kids white shirts as uniform!). School tomato pasta sauce still wins against napisan though (only an issue for the OP if he's a teacher and messy eater). I don't think it's as brutal as Milton but never tried it on sports gear.

garage-dweller; if they are white then get some laundry bleach in there!

I have a feeling that bleach has also been tried and found wanting against Agent Red.

As a preventative measure, I have a spray can of Boots Anti-Bac Shoe Spray - basically the same stuff they used at the bowling alley to spray the shoes?

Give my helmet, shoes and gloves a wee squirt when I get in.

Must be good cos it catches the back of your throat.

oo-er

all my clothes get washed @40c on a 40min wash cycle using that Halo sports stuff. I've got biking clothes that are years old and used to have to soak them in antibacterial washing up liquid once in a while to get the ming out. since using that Halo stuff there's no need to soak anything.

If you've dried them on a radiator when wet from the commute than it's probs a bacteria holiday home.

Wash them at a high-ish temp (non bio) and line dry them on a sunny day, the UV should kill the bacteria

+1 for Halo.

I had some older tops that were not pleasant for the nasal passages. Two washes later no more stink and it does not return after a ride either.
Wash all cycling stuff on delicates @ 30C.

That reminds me I need to order more.

Halo sports wash seems to say it's safe for Goretex (and presumably then other waterproof fabrics) but NOT on wool. So don't stick your merino in there.

Napisan

Read this as Napalm and giggled

Halo is very good but unfortunately I developed a skin rash despite giving the load an extra rinse, so now use Detol's antibacterial wash ... very effective at neutralising the whiff from 'man-made' fabrics etc

So don't stick your merino in there

Halo and merino definitely don't mix - I accidently left some merino socks in and they turned to 'fuzzy-felt'

We've washed merino stuff in Halo and it's been fine on several washed but the wife did get some neck warmer thing as a gift that died in the first wash, maybe that was why. Never noticed Halo didn't play nicely with wool before. Perhaps I'll go and read the destructions again.

I found that Vanish Oxy wash is great stuff for getting kit properly clean with out trashing it. Just bung a scoop in with the normal washing liquid and softener stuff.
