I want to make a catch tank that can withstand diesel and a vacuum. This is after some fun and games bleeding up the car after changing the fuel filter. The idea is to fit two hose barbs into the lid, then when I pull a vacuum with my oil remover pump any diesel that gets sucked through will stay clean and can be returned to the car fuel tank later.
Any ideas where I can get such a thing? Needs to be about 2L ideally.

Motorbike tool tube might do the trick.

A chemical / car cleaning company called Bilt Hamber have 5ltr containers with a 63mm screw on lid. They are not massively stiff, but probably stiff enough for what you want.

I may have an empty one in the shed.

That's far too good quality reeksy! I'm thinking of something like a sweetshop jar, but stiff enough not to collapse with the vacuum. Being translucent would help me not overfill it.
Any more ideas folks?

Had a thought. The body of a garden sprayer is the right sort of stiffness and translucent, but does anyone know of an alternative plain screw on lid?
@bigblackshed how floppy is the container you are thinking of? And what is the agreed unit of floppiness?

And what is the agreed unit of floppiness

The flump scale. 1 to 10. 1 = Tesco milk carton, 10 = car bumper

I googled reinforced HDPE container and this came up. Certainly looks strong.

Mityvac do one of their pressure/vacuum pump kits that comes with this sort of plastic container. It's not 2l but it is ridgid and for vacuum bleeding fluids.
I have this one. Good for diagnosing turbo/engine mounts etc as well as vacuum bleeding

You can get a bigger bottle separately. £22 on Amazon

Protein powder container

(Whey powder from Holland and Barrett - or equivalent?)

Ask on a community group and someone will have one going spare.

BDH used to be the brand, bit there's lots of these chemical containers kicking around.

I've three which used to contain flares and other safety kit when sailing and canoeing.

Could it be glass? An old pickle jar from the chippy? Metal lid should be easy to modify.

On the flump scale of floppiness, about 4.79 units, approximately.

IMG_7505

You want a Warboy double skinned plastic container specifically designed for keeping hold of yucky fluids...

Lots of brilliant ideas there folks, thank you so much.

@RustyNissanPrarie - you swine, that's a tool I'm going to have to buy now!

In the mean time Daren drums - thanks @welshfarmer - a 3.6L is on it's way, nice and dumpy, looks to score well on the Flump Scale.

Thanks again, this place is great, I hadn't heard of Daren drums or what they were for 🙂
