What typically causes a car brake pedal to stick?

Symptoms are it feels v stiff at top of pedal stroke when first driving, but easily works through and is then fine, brakes as normal. But after a few minutes driving around without braking it will do the same thing again. Like a mini-sticking action at the top.

Also feels like its affecting the clutch pedal a little, like there's some movement there when the brake sticks.

Car is a Skoda superb.

Checking the footmat wasn't involved is about the limit of my auto mechanic ability tbf - but no it's not that.

Mine stuck on a mark 3 golf.

Wd40 on the pivoty bits near the pedal sorted it out.

I'd be giving Skoda a ring. Why chance a problem braking in a car at 70mph. Get someone who knows what they are doing to have a look.

Or...

Try briskoda forums. They are a helpful bunch.

@tall_martin I'm assuming from your username you're a tall bloke. What Skoda do you own? I'm 6'5" and thinking of getting a Superb. Just wondered how they sized up?

@jeffl
I'm 6"4 with long legs.

I had an 2001 octavia vrs from 60k to 140k.

Then had a 2015Honda Civic 1.6d estate for 60k.

I changed car in 2018. I didn't go for a 2014 octavia as the seat didn't go back far enough. The golf and a4 I tried, which are very closely related, did go back far enough.

The superb and A6 were massive. Loads of leg room behind me. However, they are both big enough that I thought I'd have trouble parking them.

I ended up with a 2014 Bmw 3 series touring diesle.. Its been great, except for the one time where something died (EGR Cooler) and it spat me a £2000 bill! would sort of recommend.

Assuming its a hydraulic clutch then the clutch probably shares the same hydraulic circuit as the brakes, at least in every car I've had they do, so if there is a problem with the hydraulics then that cold affect the clutch. Its a strange one as if there was an issue with the hydraulics like old and contaminated fluid or a leak then you wouldn't get the symptoms you describe. I guess either the master or slave cylinder piston could be sticking which could presumably cause the stiffness on the initial part of the stroke that then eases, but I've never heard of that as an issue as these things are so well lubricated by the fluid. Or look for a mechanical problem with the brake pedal bearing or something. I have had this on a car before where the bushing for the brake pedal broke up and gave the brake pedal a strange notch feel with some play, it also affected the clutch pedal as the clutch pedal was on the same shaft as the brake pedal and when you used the brake pedal it bend the shaft due to the disintegrated bushing enabling the shaft to bend.

I'd check out the pedal box first.
