Over the last couple of years, and I'm sure it has to do with the expansion of people on instagram and youtube representing themselves as minor authorities, brands or "channels" but the amount of stickers plastered all over signage on cols in the Alps and even relatively minor passes in the UK really astonishing.

This summer I cycled through the alps and the dolomite's, and by the end of August i would say that most of the signage at the top of cols was so obliterated by stickers, that they all looked the same.

It's just the same as graffiti or other kinds of vandalism. Am I being a miserable old bastard or is it not cool?

My personal favourite is the addition of capes to the leaping deer signage around the haute region.

I quite enjoy looking at the stickers and where they are from, less threatening than bullet holes.

My main issue with stickers is they obscure my efforts to spray paint ‘Research Flat Earth’ on every bit of highway signage I pass.

Not sure why you say the last few years?

It's been like this for decades, at least the nineties, certainly in Europe.

I can't even put myself in the headspace of someone who would be bothered by this. What do you get out of it?

If you get upset about a metal sheet covered in stickers then you're not leaving yourself any headroom to react to things that are actually bad. You must walk around being furious at everything.

Scenic area, relatively subdued sign, people litter it with stickers announcing THEY WERE HERE!! and creating an eyesore. It’s not a major headache for me but it’s unquestionably, imho, ill-mannered, selfish behaviour. On a par littering the area.

Well, while it's subjective whether you think it's an eyesore caused by self-important arseholes can you not see the potential problem of people not being able to read warning signs? I think the Applecross sign ^^ might be a bit tricky to read from a moving vehicle.

For me it's like graffiti it depends if it has any artistic merit, which is obviously very subjective.

If it's just a 'tag' I'm not a fan really, and it is essentially just putting more paper/plastic into the countryside with little justification. Nowhere near as bad as littering though IMHO.

Looks like the work of people that love to hang padlocks on stuff.

Padlocks

They were removed from that bridge not long after.

Indeed, a local group of mincers like to leave their 'rad' skull emblem sticker around, it's rather embarrassing to be honest.

Ha, the Telford Bridge over the Spey here in Craigellachie started to gain more than a few padlocks, they were a bloody eyesore and thankfully the village council had them all removed. They've tried to return but never last more than a week.

I can almost understand the stickers being a nuisance like the Applecross sign up there though ^, but meh, there's worse things to be worried about, like the actual shite and litter these staycationers are leaving behind 😉

In Estonia they create 'love monuments' for this - so that the locks are only placed in appropriate places. They then get cleared up annually.
