It's 25 years since Steve Marriott died in a fire, probably already unconscious from drink and coke. What a sad end to one of the greatest pop/rock stars of all time and arguably the best white soul/R&B voice ever. There's a story about him almost joining the Stones when Mick Taylor left. Apparently Keith Richards wanted him (what a duet they would have made!)but Jagger vetoed him because he would be upstaged by him. Another story is how Robert Plant used to follow the Small Faces around to learn from Marriott and that Jimmy Page had Marriott in mind when he looked for a vocalist for his band. Hey Presto! Robert Plant.

Total legend of British music. Fantastic voice and fantastic guitarist.
Mr. Weller nicked his guitar playing style off Marriott (no bad thing.)

Always amazed when I see live stuff with that massive voice coming out of that little fella.

I really love Steves stuff with the Small Faces. Was really just getting into them shortly before he died. He had a great voice and lovely approach to guitar too. Brilliant!

For those wondering, the commentator in Bob's vid is wrong, Marriott's playing the sunburst Telecaster and isn't the singer.

Something of a slow car crash of a life with some great moments on stage.

..... arguably the best white soul/R&B voice ever.

Humble Pie was his best vehicle to show that imo

EDIT :

And a classic mod in his day :

I saw Steve perform way after the height of his fame at a pub in the Old Kent Road. He was swigging brandy all through the set, so was a bit worse for wear , but his singing and playing were amazing . Stunning voice, listen to 'Black Coffee' if you can.
