Anyone seen Children of Men, has some great dystopian scenes of immigrants in cages by the road side, although it's not looking too dystopian now....
Thet do go to the US
ISIS filling the power vacuum that was left when the UK/US pulled out was predictable. Enter a war that can't be won then pull out leaving chaos. Now if Blair had taken any notice of Dominique de villepin's speech you wouldn't have to blame us for not doing enough to stop refugees in Calais.
There are ****stani's there at Calais, what's wrong with that country? One interviewed tonight on C4 was 65.
Imv a fair number are economic migrants as well as war displaced persons.
Tyrion, amazing story, is it a van or a caravelle? Do they try and get into cars?
****stan has been hit by over 2000 US drone strikes. The regional war started by Blair doesn't stop at borders.

I didn't see anyone else, mines got windowless barn door it's a kombi, half van with side windows and a tow bar, which helped whoever it was who jumped on the back as he tried to wrestle the doors open.
We should have more men on the ground there, techically our border is on French Soil as there's is on our side, seriously they need to put troops in, it's not pleasant for the truckers doing this day in day out, I wouldn't like to do it again, I was out there last month and back same day and it was no where near as bad as it was yesterday, they are everywhere.
The regional war started by Blair...
Started? Is that like how John Simpson liberated Kabul? At best Blair was the team mascot.
Bush said he couldn't have done it without Blair and as for Blair - it was his persoanl decision.
tyrionl1 - MemberThere are ****stani's there at Calais, what's wrong with that country?
Quite a lot. ****stan is the 6th highest "producer" of asylum seekers in the industrialised world. Religious persecution, opposition political figures "disappearing", slavery, "honour" murders, 13 year olds being gang raped then having family members murdered for refusing to kill them, then being told that they're legally married to one of the rapists, then being put on trial for having premarital sex...
@tyrion scary story. I drive to France quite regularly and you do see more and more migrants hanging around the roadside. With a small car we don't get bothered aside from having to try and avoid hitting anyone.
There are ****stani's there at Calais, what's wrong with that country?
****stan is a poor country. Most are economic migrants.
Not sure running people over is the solution but this otherwise revealing

Well it's day two now and we are still over run with Trucks parked up here waiting to get across, not sure if the French are 'at it' again, but being a truck driver has to be the worse job going right now regardless of your nationality and the French are really hacked off with us.
Fact is nowhere else do asylum seekers or refugees get instant benefits, plus a translator, plus legal aid, in the rest of the EU they get nothing until they are given asylum, meanwhile we give it to them whilst we deny our own disabled and poor the very things that the system was set up for, now I'm no Daily Mail reader, but this totally sucks and leaving the EU won't help, they'll still show up there trying to get to Eldorado UK.

The fact is that the UK is forced to comply with EU Directives with regards to minimum standards for asylum seekers in Member States, just like France. So if it bothers you that much leaving the EU would indeed help.

*Warning - may seriously challenge your Daily Mail fueled prejudices*
If you believe that my deluded friend, you've never stepped outside your million pound Islington residence away from your fellow champagne socialists and lived amongst this. Your wife or girlfriend isn't witnessing daily the excesses afforded our newcomers over and above those that are afforded our own disabled, old and poor. When was the last time one of yours was purchased a motor vehicle by the state in order to save the job seeking taxi fares, or issued six months of expensive drugs even with the suspicion they were headed straight out of the country. Or granted a 'Guardian' from the state because he claimed to be 14 even though clearly he was 20+ which put the running cost of the thirty pound per hour translator, the guardian and the other benefits well above the disabled allowance or old age pension.
I don't read the Daily Mail but I do live in the seaside town opposite Calais, and my girlfriends work in the Doctors Surgery or the local Social Services and the Police and Ambulance service that mops up after the running street battles amongst the various factions and their drug suppliers and people smugglers, so please don't lecture me on the benefits of asylum seekers or economic migrants, we've endured it for years, in fact probably coming up a decade now.
How are the streets of Islington are the borders tidy?
If you believe that my deluded friend, you've never stepped outside your million pound Islington residence away from your fellow champagne socialists
Do I believe EU Directive 2003/9/EC ? Well it's clearly stated on the EU website so I don't think whether or not it exists is really up for discussion.
And I have no idea why you think I live in a house in Islington worth million pound or drink champagne. I'm a building worker who lives Croydon and drinks builders tea.
I don't read the Daily Mail but I do live in the seaside town opposite Calais
Of course you don't read the Daily Mail, I imagine it must be too liberal, left-wing, and lacking in prejudice, for you 🙂
And when you say that you "live in the seaside town opposite Calais" does that enhance your understanding of the situation with regards to EU policy and rules towards asylum seekers in the same way as Sarah Palin foreign policy credentials were enhanced because her "neighbours were foreign countries" ?

A building worker? My my, do you have a fine construction worker décolletage ? Just asking by the way at my height I come into closer contact with them than most would prefer.
So a building worker? Who, if he really were a proper building worker, would be totally distressed at the way pay rates have been depressed by the influx of my new neighbours and by now dressed in purple and yellow and working on Nigels campaign team.
No my friend you are far from being a building worker with your virtual keyboard warrior socialism and lack of real life understanding, but yes I can see France from my house on a clear day, and recently if you missed the tale, I could see economic migrants trying to climb in the back of my building workers van as I returned from another 16 hour day working over there.
Someone needs to have a word with the Calais Mayor. *This congregation is not Britains problem. Its a EU problem. Its disgusting keeping them in makeshift camps and allowing them to be around (and causing a danger to themselves) the terminal and access roads.
At Christmas I witnessed it for myself- slate grey sideways rain and lots allover the place with loads of Police transit vans running around after them everywhere. *They are supposed to claim asylum in the first EU country that they land in.
Someone somewhere in France is letting this happen and the Calais fiasco continue almost as though they want a complete open border between France and Britain.....
Look at my last line again. This is whats happening (or France wants to happen).
We need to get out of the EU. All the benefits of being a member are sadly being eroded by the neghatives.

My dear fellow we have, remember Sangatte? They closed for us, that was five years ago, did we learn from Iraq? No we went and bombed Libya.
The French blame Ernie the champagne building worker socialist and his friends Tony & Gordon and now they blame the Wisteria clearing expense fiddling David Cameron.
But whoever is to blame the certain fact remains as anyone from the Iron Bank to your own discredited HSBC will tell you, borrowing large sums of money to give away can only lead to disaster and that is what successive governments of your silly little island (his words not mine) are doing to tempt the worlds displaced persons to your shores.
tyrionl- do you live in the real world? The world of facts? I suspect you don't.
Migrants bring in vast amounts of money to this country. Vast. Remove migration from the equation and the UK's debt would go up. If there were to be zero net migration the Office of Budget Responsibility say the public debt would be around 145% of GDP by 2062, as opposed to 73% of GDP with high net migration. It's something like £20 Billion a year.
(sauce- http://migrationobservatory.ox.ac.uk/)
This means we have enough money to help out the few asylum seekers we do deign to take (less than half what Germany take). And they have a pretty rotten life on what we do give them - around £5 a day. You try living on £5 a day.
http://www.refugeecouncil.org.uk/policy_research/the_truth_about_asylum/facts_about_asylum_-_page_1
As for illegal immigrants claiming benefits- they can't. Regardless of what you say- they are here illegally. If they go to collect any benefits they'll be found out and deported. So they work on the black market, which I'll agree will undercut you if you're a cockle-picker or something else shit. If we maybe had a more reasonable asylum policy where more people were officially granted asylum we would have less of a problem with illegal migrants. But we don't- we have migration policy now being guided by the bigotry of your mate Nigel and so we're rejecting twice as many applications for asylum as other EU countries.
Get some compassion and have a good hard look at just how lucky you are to not find yourself in a situation where you feel the safest thing to do is cross a continent in a truck with no food or money and break into a country illegally to avoid being killed/shot/dying of starvation etc.
munro - the migrants who bring in millions to the UK are frequently from countries where they have to apply for a work visa, like the US or French and German bankers. Trying to suggest that these economic migrants from sub Saharan Africa are going to bring in millions is a falacy.
We need controlled immigration from the EU and we need to continue our approach to asylum seekers, we granted very few places last year and this should continue
The asylum rules are that you should claim asylum in the first safe country you reach, these migrants have traveled through Italy, Greece, Spain, France etc. They should have claimed asylum there if that was there intention. The fact is they are mostly economic migrants coming to work illegally. (@ernie apologies I could not find the news article, perhaps it was a tv interview).
The French don't arrest these people as if they do they know they will immediately claim asylum in France
At the EU conference last night the debate on migrants was very heated with some countries speaking of reintroducing passport checks and suspending the Shengren agreement. Our opt out is looking golden
Chap I have been living in the real world, in fact I stand to correct myself, Sangatte opene in 1999 and closed in 2002 that was 13 yrs ago, we have endured this since then. Whatever your googled links may tell you, folk here working on the front line who I meet each and every day of my life to the point nothing surprises us. There is a complete centre that has been established to deal with them and process the claims, it's not my bag this, only the fact I experienced the near boarding of the van of joy only two days ago has set me on this excessive realtionship with the keyboard.
But it is exactly the attitude you silly people who don't have to deal with it in your own back yard show in your albeit in normal times excellent humanitarian views and libertarian ideals, that are bankrupting your own country and denying your own assistance.
You dont' seem to get the fact you are broke, you are borrowing trillions and the welfare budgets counts for a large portion.
You simply cannot afford to finance this never mind putting all of us who have been here accepting without complaint the worlds war displaced since the Kosovo crisis.
I really can't stress enough the depth of the problem please don't try and convince me unless you come with me next trip and you can fend them off, I'll give you a baseball bat.
My wife's a migrant. She is, quite literally, in my back yard (sometimes. Sometimes she's in the front yard). She can't claim benefits (by the time she can she'll have been in the UK for 11 years) and has to pay £200 a year to use the NHS.
That first googled link is from the University of Oxford. It's not some hokum nonsense, it's scientifically researched facts, not a racist sat just off Beachy Head saying "I saw this immigrant go to the doctor's once".
With regards to your nonsense about benefits-

This has nothing to do with legal migrants, this has to do with a lucrative trade of people trafficking, drugs, arms and all manner of profiteering from human misery.
You can google and pie graph to your hearts content, here's one from me of Ernie's decolletage..
It's irrellevant to our problem.
Explain to me how last week in the White House Surgery Cheriton the young man of 20 who claimed to be 14 came along with his Guardian and Translator to demand 6 months of prescription drugs that patient client confidentiality forbid the nurse in question to report, but suffice to say have an excessive street value wherever he had just arrived from. He was fully briefed on all the things to say, be a child, be sick, ask for these particular drugs..
Every day of every week this goes on and has been going on in one way or another for years, I should have kept a diary, written a blog, dates, times, places, amounts, witnesses..
Then you could have googled that, maybe made a pie chart. For sure no other statitician could compute the entire cost when you consider all that is involved from NHS, thru Legal Aid and Translation & Social services.. Meanwhile we cut back care for our own in the community, we don't like it.
On radio 4 this morning they were interviewing migrants in Calais and asking them why they were so desperate to reach the UK and not interested in staying in Italy or France or other countries they passed through on their journey. The main theme seemed to be (verbatim) "free house, free money, free food".
I rather suspect this won't be the reality for many given the numbers sleeping rough in Parks etc. but for at least some of those who had reached the UK and were also being interviewed it didn't seem too far off the mark.
At the EU conference last night the debate on migrants was very heated with some countries speaking of reintroducing passport checks and suspending the Shengren agreement. Our opt out is looking golden
Haven't Hungary already done this? I'd imagine what EU officials from certain counties are saying publicly is quite a bit diferent from what they're saying behind closed doors. At this rate, the borderlesss Europe ideal is looking about as sustainable is the long term as the Euro
"Migrants bring in vast amounts of money to this country. Vast. Remove migration from the equation and the UK's debt would go up."
Whilst this is technically correct the reality is somewhat different. The last research on this by Migration Watch suggested that once you strip out the net contributions of a very small number of high net worth individuals who reside here for tax purposes the vast majority of economic migrants fail to make a net contribution.
I can't find the exact figure but I think it was something like each Migrant would need to find employment paying a minimum of £28K before they became a net contributor to the UK - much more if they moved with families etc.
For some migrants with skills we need e.g. Healthcare, Engineering, Science etc. the "financial" contribution must be weighed with their broader contributions but the reality is that a majority of migrants do not work using these scarce skills or earn £28K - allowing even more people here without some kind of points system is just more of the same and overall serves to increase public spending and requires a proportionate increase in tax contributions from existing UK residents.

Indeed. You forgot the free healthcare and free education for their kids. They were quite keen on the idea of that too. All paid for by the magic money tree.
I've always been a bit dubious of the 'we're a soft touch and being taken adavantage of' narrative peddled by the Daily Mail. But even allowing for selective editing (which I doubt Radio 4 is that guilty of) their reasons for wanting to come here is the 'free everything' message that seems to have travelled around the globe.
How much truth is in it, I don't know. I imagine they're going to be very disapointed. But that seems to be the impression that they're all under. You make it here, and you're laughing. Its free everything from that day on. No wonder they're shlepping across entire continents to get here.
Well I have no great desire to leave the EU anymore than the next person, that daughter I brought back lives and hopes to work in Amsterdam, I've just got a new job working with a dutch organisation, I also work with a German company, almost my entire life has involved working with Europe. Nor do I wish us as a country to cease to be able to live up to its obligations as a former colonial power and despolier of the worlds poorest regions, but....
Right now it's got to stop for a bit, so we can gather our breath, re organise our own social infrastructure which is already at breaking point.
Not quite sure how that's going to happen, but for sure it must involve better security at the borders and particularly at Calais and this side, I bet even now if i leave this keyboard as I must, i have a wedding to attend, I'll see some lonely wanderers at the edge of the M20 waiting to be arrested, but this side of the tunnel, they'll be smiling.
Good day to you all and please excuse the ranty nature of a couple of posts back there..
just5minutes- Migration Watch are a biased group who are happy to pump out "facts" with numbers tweaked to suit their anti-migrant agenda. The Observatory is the only genuinely non-biased credible source of information on this and they say migrants increase the UK's income.

If you're a people smuggler in North Africa, you're going to sell the final destination as some sort of Utopia as you want people to sign up for your very expensive and very perilous service. They've been sold a lie long before they even start their journey.
So
Whats the way forward?
Personally, I think the only answer can be refugee camps either at point of entry or nearer to point of origin, and a clear and unequivocal understanding that the ONLY way to asylum in Europe or the UK is through the correct UN channels via one of these camps - as part of this, anyone arriving here independently must be immediately returned to one of these camps to be processed and allocated asylum according to case and need, if we want to take the traffickers out then its vital that there are no ways to short cuts they system.
has anyone got any fairer ideas?

You have to address the demand, which means over seas military intervention to bring the various civil wars to a pause.
A lot of these people would return home if they had one to go to.

Maybe the BBC would be a better source for you unless you believe they are biased too? Their analysis in 2010/2011 showed average government spending of £22K per family. Add on a few years and the £28K for personal taxable income is entirely in line with that even though it fails to reflect the additional higher costs of housing, translators etc. for many migrants.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-13633966
The BBC analysis shows that people don't make a net contribution as tax payers until their earnings reach a similar level cited by MigrationWatch - the telegraph put the figure even higher for the break even point at £38K:
Edit- forget it. I don't want to engage with the fool.
we also have to deal with a population growth of ~10million in the next decade or 2.
housing, transport, hospitals, schools, power, food production, water, waste, etc. will all face a massive increase in demand.
we can ignore this (which seems government policy), or we can get on with building all the stuff we'll need to supply a population heading quickly towards 80million.
leaving this to 'market forces' will not produce a civilised, healthy outcome.
@tyron rants are ok, they brighten the place up !
@munro as others have posted migrant workers make a huge contribution as it includes all those Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan etc bankers paying millions in tax each. It's also misleading to use stats calculated of net contribution in an era before the expansion of the EU and recent surge in asylum seekers. £200 a year for the NHS is a bargain. I thought UKIPs idea of all migrant workers having to buy an private insurance policy approved by the NHS was a good one.
A side effect of increasing the personal allowance is that migrant workers can arrive and undercut local wages and pay virtually no tax. I appreciate we want to help the less well off and reduce their tax burden but it has a side effect of encouraging lower paid immigration and depressing wages
A side effect of increasing the personal allowance is that migrant workers can arrive and undercut local wages and pay virtually no tax.
Illegal immigrants aren't allowed to work, so it's only legal migration from within the EU where this applies (ignoring the black market).
Understood footflaps, I was replying to muro's point about migrant contributions.
It's interesting what the Australians have done with working tourists/gap year students, they now have to pay tax and don't get a full Aussie tax free allowance. A UK based agency can hire workers (eg builders, farm workers) for say 6 months each, pay then each 10k and nothing comes back to the UK tax man.

Was only a matter of time
Sadly desperate people dying in Calais because they have taken desperate risks is a regular occurrence.
Calais fubarred again.
Another week another opportunity to pour the worlds troubled masses into Kent, whilst disrupting everyone's lives in this region.
Just a quick nod to Champagne Ernie_Lynch and his pals Tony & Gordon for creating this situation in the first place, not to mention the rest of the human rights legal industry that is still enjoying the fruits of their corruption.
just5minutes - MemberThe BBC analysis shows that people don't make a net contribution as tax payers until their earnings reach a similar level cited by MigrationWatch
All of which assumes that people only contribute as taxpayers, and overlooks the value they add as workers, which at the lower end of the pay scale is massively more.
All of which assumes that people only contribute as taxpayers, and overlooks the value they add as workers, which at the lower end of the pay scale is massively more.
And this assumes that there isn't someone already here with the capacity and capability to do it. We don't need to import cheap unskilled labour when there's plenty of it here - what we do need to do is sort out the ridiculous merry go round of low wages, tax credits, enormous administrative costs and a portion of the able-bodied society who have no intention of working.
Is this a good time to call Tony Blair a ****?
However badly you champagne socialist charlies might feel toward Thatcher (who I also hated) and what she did to our manufacturing and regulation, what the Blairs have done to us is much much worse and has a far reaching legacy that can never be unravelled.

I am sorry I missed this before my earlier ironic aside referring to your political choice of sparkling beverage and just to clarify I am perfectly aware of the differences between immigration, legal, illegal economic and purely transient, indeed my family enjoys the free legal movement within the EU as do I.
What I don't however enjoy is the casual way in which those who you politically support engaged in the American style influx of taking on the entire worlds poor and oppressed without first putting in place a social infrastructure with which to deal with them.
We are quite literally on the front line here, from Kosovans to Eritreans, Afghans to Somalians, Christians Sunni & Shia all battling it out within our streets at night. To contrast with that we also have the Ghurkas in town and you couldn't get a more pleasant community, the others on the other hand tend to be not only the worlds troubled, they are also the stronger fitter, more devious survivors that are bright enough to work the system and oppress those around them.
Bleeding heart liberals are just not equipped to deal with this, they are twisted around the outstretched and grasping palms that take and take again, from Romanian and Bulgarian blaggers of the late nineties to the Tier 2 & 3 national traffickers too numerous to mention in a post such as this.
As to the plight of chippys & brickies in this area, it is I am pleased to say at long last on the up, we have a thousand new homes being built on ex military land so there is more work for many of my friends and colleagues in the building industry a surprising number of whom however would also disagree with your politics, but then they are not Cersei Blairs guests, many had the unlucky chance to be born here and were not educated perhaps as well as you and your fellow migrants.
Tbh I had no idea what your trade was, but you do show a level of education above that of a local construction worker so my guess would have been local government paper clip shifter and keyboard operator, but you do appear to be able to spend a not inconsiderable amount of time at this place for a legitimate woodsmith.
Could you make me one of those little wooden watch stands for my iwatch? 😉

It used to be called Folkestone, it's now referred to as Eurotunnel on all the signage from that Lunnon and yes it is very different from the place it used to be. Once upon a time this was called Hell Fire corner when 'they' were lobbing shells across, I think a lot of us would prefer that over the situation we currently face and that is almost not an ironic statement.
I spend a few days largely off the site and things get interesting, perhaps there is a lesson there 😉
I was no fan of Thatcher but at least our ports aren't blockaded by workers striking over Eurotunnel's decision to get out of the Ferry business
It was Thatcher that dug that infernal hole in the ground in the first place which, not only decimated some very good riding, but bypassed our Town forced the closure of our Channel Port, which was already reeling from the loss of its fishing fleet thanks to the [s]French[/s] Eu. Our MP at the time was that toad, the utter utter utter bastard and prince of darkness Michael Howard, and we had to rely on the delightful protestation services of another bent MP from Thanet who's name temporarily eludes me but like most Tory mps should end up, in jail or suffocated with a plastic bag stuck in his mouth naked on a chair in a room full of bondage equipment. I think it might have been jail.
Nothing nothing nothing good ever comes from a Tory administration.
In fact since the fifties in terms of personal freedoms, I can't think of anything that much good that's come from any administration of this pathetic country.
Given I was once free to drink, ride a motorcycle without a helmet at 100 mph, smoke wherever I liked, call a spade a shovel if necessary without being arrested, withdraw my labour at a moments notice, carry a large knife or a felling axe, own a gun and what's more people were polite to me and raised their hat would we meet.
Small nomenclature query - why are these people referred to as "migrants" ? Surely they are attempting migrants, until they actually get to the UK. Or failed migrants. Or migruands, for the those of you who went to posh schools.
tyrionl1 - have you thought about going being an immigrant somewhere else? You don't seem to like it here much
you do show a level of education above that of a local construction worker
What do you know of my "level of education" ? If you're asking it's to CSE level, which I would describe as very much average/normal for "a local construction worker".
Yes Mr Binners sir I have, but that operation yewtree embarrassment pretty much put paid to that.. 😉

You can read and write, elucidate a good opinion in debate... Not many building industry workers out here in the boondocks have quite that level.. You could almost have been a teacher, but I thought you obviously were too well educated for that. 😉

I'm absolutely with you on the tipping hats and carrying axes thing
tyrion - most building workers can read and write. I won't deny that what differentiates me from most building workers is that I read the Guardian and the Morning Star. That undoubtedly gives me an advantage over most other building workers in terms of how well-informed I am.
Well here's the latest, the sources are visual, a coastguard volunteer and a coastguard full time operator. Yesterday over 100 illegals (I'm not going to use the term immigrant which denigrates perfectly decent folk)just walked the 20 miles through the tunnel assisted by the French Eurotunnel workers who they have been helping with the burning tyres for the blockade.
You won't be reading about any of this in the Daily Fail, there's a strict embargo on news of this sort of activity as you can imagine in the current climate. Meanwhile yesterdays estimate is 6000 trucks on the M20 with the local coastguard being drawn in along with the British Red Cross as well as the rest of the emergency services to dispense food and water to the stranded truckers.
On the other side of the trench no such assistance, although the French built Lorry Parks years ago to cover this sort of occurrence but truckers being truckers either don't use them or are just unaware of their existence. So they park up, their vehicles are assaulted and there are further hold ups if they do get some shuttles working as the vehicles have to be scanned for CO2 and Body heat (not easy in the weather) as fish & meat cargoes rot if the refrigerated vehicles run out of gas.
Whose fault is all this, ours of course as Eurotunnel is forced to adopt the "anglo saxon' business model maximised for profit over the gallic socialist supporter of french infrastructure model. That and our generous benefits image broadcast across the world.
Locally a journey that normally takes me 10 minutes home from the sailing lake on Wednesday took nearly an hour and that's using back roads once I cleared a bottle neck at Hythe. The only way to travel round here right now is by blue light flashing and there are plenty of those.

ernie_lynch - MemberOf course you don't read the Daily Mail, I imagine it must be too liberal, left-wing, and lacking in prejudice, for you 🙂

tyrion - most building workers can read and write. I won't deny that what differentiates me from most building workers is that I read the Guardian and the Morning Star. That undoubtedly gives me an advantage over most other building workers in terms of how well-informed I am.
😆
That's me cheekyboy ...... well posh 🙂
