When I were a lad there was no VR so we had these plastic viewer things that looked like futuristic binoculars. You loaded a slot in the viewer with cardboard discs. The cardboard disc sandwiched tiny acetate stereoscopic 3D images that you could see illuminated in the viewer and browse through by pressing a lever on the side.

Being a fortunate kid I had one for Xmas. Along with two image wheels. 'Bed knobs and Broomsticks' and 'The Jungle Book'. The Jungle Book one especially wowed my brain. I'd spend ages lost in there, peering at the exquisitely-crafted diorama, and the effects of natural light added (to my memory) a shifting, jewel-like quality to the whole thing.

Few weeks back I reached the grand old age of A Certain Age, and have a little birthday money burning a hole. I'm thinking very seriously about buying one of these viewers as a low-cost collectable/misty-eyed throwback. And I would actually enjoy using them. We have a VR set/Google cardboard thing and while in so many ways similar, it's in other ways the very antithesis of the simple old analog experience.

I think the furthest into the present I'll go is to find a vintage backlit Viewmaster and upgrade the old bulb to daylight LED equivalent. Although the one I had as a kid was simply daylight-operated. No batteries required. I wonder if they did one with both options?

So, which model to buy? Looking on ebay there're are scores of models, from 1930s Bakelite to the now? Anyone else have any Viewmaster memories to share?

I had a "Talking Viewmaster." Which would've been great if I could have ever found discs that made the bugger talk.

^ Wow! (Thinks - How do cardboard reels 'talk'?)

Just found a resource of ultimate geekery:

I had one as a kid, I can only remember a Transformers disc.

No doubt it was a Christmas present, along with a skateboard, bike or a pedal-go, which you then went outside with immediately and played with friends on the street.

Now it's all Xbox and PlayStation's, Christmas day the streets are deserted. I'm glad I was young when I was.
