How are you all getting on with your choice of handheld console?

Got a steam deck couple of months ago. After playing some games from my steam library I'm starting to add retro games through emudeck and it is brilliant being able to play AAA games one minute then old console games the next.

Also the free games from Amazon prime and epic games are a nice bonus.

I got an ROG Ally a few months ago, have rarely used it as I've just been too busy, and when I have had time for gaming its just been short PS5 session. Had a steam deck, one of the first generation ones and actually preferred that to the Ally.

The ROG Ally is great but it runs Windows and can be really slow at times with updates etc, I just found SteamOS to be a much nicer experience on a handheld. I'll probably end up chopping it in to CEX for something that I'll actually use more.

I’m interested in this topic. I’ve had many consoles, mostly PlayStation but stretching waaaaay back. I haven’t been inspired to get a ps5 as most recent games don’t interest me that much - great graphics, amazing movement, but lacking something for me. I’m not really into online play, and lots of recent games seem to have short single player stories. The last games I that truly grabbed me were  uncharted and Red Dead.
I do like the idea of a handheld, but I have no idea what I should be looking for, and I don’t know any youngsters who can advise me. So Steamdeck then? Is that the answer? Or should I go for the new Switch? Or one of the other type that seem to be appearing?

I don't think that's the case, unless you're playing games that are primarily battle royale style games.  I have the opposite problem, I don't have the time / inclination to invest 40+ hours into a sprawling sandbox game.

There's a ton of Assassin's Creed games; I'm obsessed with Life Is Strange (it vies for top spot with Red Dead Redemption as my all-time favourite console game; any number of Final Fantasy games; Deliver Us The Moon; Starfield; and many, many more.

I did quite enjoy the last Assassin's Creed, but it did feel like it was over quickly.

Some of the other games you mentioned felt a bit like work to me rather than fun. I mentioned Uncharted earlier - that's maybe my all time favourite: not the best looking, or with the most realistic combat system, or with great online play, or the smoothest gameplay, but for me they were all fun from start to finish - pure enjoyment.

I'm getting a bit sidetracked. Do you reckon a Steamdeck would be a good investment for me rather than getting a PS5?

If you like Uncharted, the rebooted Tomb Raider trilogy will be right up your alley.

Do you want to tie up the TV, or do you want to game on a train?

Do you want to tie up the TV

The deck plugs into tvs rather seemlessly.

I'm currently playing Jedi Fallen Order on mine, despite being EA (EA and Ubisoft have proprietary launchers which can over complicate tunning certain games) it runs really well. I don't have much experience of other systems to say whether it's better or worse than anything else but I find the thing bogglingly clever. Just have to remember not to throw the "controller" at the floor when you rage quit.

^ edit of my above comment, yet to appear. Probably misread C's comment due to tiredness. C meant PS5 has to use a tv rather than whether the deck has the capability to display on a tv. I'm going back to sleep for a bit.

I think valve has announced the Rog Ally can get SteamOs installed.

Valve have recently announced the SteamOs will be available for the Rog Ally.

Might be worth installing it as it's a more powerful console than the Steam Deck I think.
