I am sadly.

I stayed up for the Referendum, Trumps "crowning" and May's disaster.....

So apart from seeing May getting her arse handed to her on a plate (sort of)..... my "form" isn't great, so hoping I don't jinx this one too.

weirdly yes.  I'm totally interested in it.

To a degree, the fate of the world hangs in the balance.

Don't really follow IS politics too much. How does it work do they vote for someone to lead their state or do they just vote for a president? How do the mid terms differ from this? I watched Panorama the other day where they were talking of impeachment but also how it could really backfire on the democrats if they fail so is very unlikely.

Cheers.

I think the results will start tumbling in around midnight with many coming in after 1am GMT.

To massively over simplify it, as I understand it, if the Democrats win either house they can basically "shackle" Trump and his ambitions. Investigate his never seen tax returns.... pump more money into the Russian investigation... ensure he can't pull the US out.of NATO too..... If he so wished. This is Trump after all, who knows what damage he can do in another 2 years if given a free reign..... Genuinely scary.

3 Levels of federal government

Congress/House

https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/2018-midterm-election-forecast/house/

Election for the lower chamber, like the commons but without all of the clout

Senate

Smaller Upper chamber, one seat per state

https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/2018-midterm-election-forecast/senate/

Currently very close, terms are 6 (think) years so not all up for election every cycle, this time it's mainly republican bankers so harder to change the balance

President once every 4 years max 2 terms

Finally Governors

https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/2018-midterm-election-forecast/governor/

Some fairly impartial news sources

https://www.npr.org/tags/549279262/2018-midterm-elections

Well basically communists if you watch fox

Good god no! Theres far too bloody much coverage of American politics on British telly, it's been wall to wall for weeks. Though I did manage to kip through most of Beyond 100 days, so I'll have to find something to watch as I probably won't sleep tonight now.

Didn't like Katy Kay's crushed velvet jacket this episode.

I will keep an eye on it yes.

Sort of vested interest in the outcome...

There is only one way I’d like to see it go, I won’t sit fingers crossed but I do hope some people have learned a lesson over the last couple of years.

As for UK politics, that comment is sarcasm Shirley..

I'm nervous........ that after Brexit and Trump and 'they couldn't, could they' that his supporters will mobilise and the results will be an even bigger mandate. And then he'll be uncontrollable.

Please no, but I am nervous

I’ll be checking the moment I wake up.

I really hope the Republicans get their arse handed to them, it might be a turning point, it seems the world has taken a massive leap to the right in the last few years through a politics of stupid.

Trump doesn’t seem to need the Russians this time around, he’s invented a caravan of illegal immigrats, sent 15k real troops to stop them, but I can see him being a ‘lame duck’ President like Obama in his second term, the difference will be Trump will use his executive power with impunity and the House may try to impeach him the moment they can.

The courts will be on him for that though. Also the house can't impeach, senate has to do that and they certainly won't have them numbers for another 2 years to get close so they need hope he royally screws up.

His base sits about 35% though and geographically not well spread, chances of all of them voting is slim.

At least I hope that is how it goes.

The forecasts had Trump as 1 in 4 to win the white house, forecasts were fairly good on that one, so what makes you think the current ones are so far out?

As I understand it in the last mid terms only 37% bothered voting and they're hoping for a 50% turnout this time because of the Trump controversy.Yeah democracy in action.

lol...... like anybody hasn't?

Hopefully the female vote will be the decisive factor here - they were sleeping last time around

I'll be "up" anyway.... will be watching with interest.

For me, it'll be an indicator of whether the slide to the right is inevitable, or whether it can be reversed by "normal" people engaging with politics and drowning out the looneys.

Frankly, if the US doesn't hand The Donald a decisive defeat after the shit he's pulled in the last 2 years.... they deserve everything they get.

There seem to be some good democratic candidates too...... can't blame Hilary any more

Voting booths in gated communities. What the actual?!

It's like a return to the 60's.

That said.......

I'm hoping between BBC and CNN. BBC for chat/opinion and CNN for stats.... that I partly understand.

Florida looking interesting, particularly as Trump has a hard on for the State...

I'm taking the republican online hate machines' frantic attempts to undermine the legitimacy of the elections as a good sign. But the report that 1 in 4 of all Texas voting machines will log an "all ticket" vote for the democrats as including a vote for Ted Cruz as a bad sign.

5 hour waits to vote are pretty interesting. Does it undermine democracy? Of course. Does it mostly happen in minority communities? No shit. But it's still pretty damn fine to see people do it.

It's not looking to be a "blue wave" as the Americans call it. The Republican vote seems to be holding up pretty well so far.

Please no.

It looks like the Democrats might take the House.... which will hamper Trump a lot BUT 2 years of the hate stirred up by Trump seems to be working for him still.

I read on the net somewhere, BBC perhaps.

"Hate lasts longer than hope."

If I had to put money on it I would say there is a really good chance Trump will win a second term.

America, all of us actually, can't say we didn't see the warning signs I suppose...

Think I'll stay up till I've seen the Dems win the House (please, please) Bedford I head off to bed.

I think Trump is going to portray tonight as a victory/ conspiracy.  Ie. It really could have been so much worse for him... and it looks like it really hasnt been. Taken as a referendum on himself I mean. Then he'll street blaming the loss of the House (pleeeaassseee) on some sort of Democratic deep state BS or something, as usual basically.

It's only 9pm here so I might stay up a bit longer.

I'm with some Californians visiting the Lone Star State, so the view I've been given is somewhat skewed.

But it's a bit too earlier to be calling it one way or another yet. But I think the Dems were never likely to win the Senate?

Yep.

The democrats take the House... but really not a bad night for Republicans compared to what you would think 2 years of Trump would do to voting actions in saner times.

Still.... the dangerous blond blob has now has his wings clipped. Phew!

Also...

I friggin can't WAIT to see Trumps tax returns when he is now inevitably forced to reveal them!! 😁

I still think it's likely Trump will win a second term though.

Pretty good result IMO.

At least there are now some checks and balances which will calm “his” policies.

Good to hear more Women came out to vote.

A few disappointments Steve King getting re-elected in Iowa pretty shocking, gillum losing in Florida ORourke in texas, & Abrams not quite there

But house Dems have done well against a big majority (& gerrymandering that seems crazy in a democracy)

http://www.espn.com/espnradio/play?id=25201883

A good round up of the state of play in the middle of the night

I'd say more positives than negatives there, Senate was always going to be an uphill battle with the seats on offer and quite a few going down to 1-2% which as the assessment goes being within 1 or 2% still means you turned out a lot of people on your side

They get 2 years to build on this while Trump has nothing but Scandal and Fear.

There is a scenario where Congress could work with the Senate and bypass Trump

Agreed, well apart from the 2 year bit - the campaigns for 2020 will launch into over-drive in Jan 2020, I can't remember the last time an incumbent President didn't win the his party primary, but this may be one of the rare times they'll fact a real opposition.

Trump can look forward to 12 months of being battered by the house in any way they can, including releasing his Tax return, something he's been fighting ever since he put his name forward, and facing allegations of Russian involvement in the 2016 election, then it's straight into fighting for re-election.
