Went for a wee ride in Grizedale and decided to wear my kayaking dry top and rash vest in a desperate bid to stay dry. The trails were like rivers.

Very well intentioned edit jaminb, but the point is that it's not actually raining much if at all in the NW of the UK. In order to make your post more betterer it would actually have been better to put NW England ( and add SW Scotland if you wanted to be totally inclusive)

got soaked working this morning so left ambleside and went home at lunch time and bowness/newby bridge road was fine then, apparently by the end of the day it was chaos.

Wetter than an otters pocket in Cockermouth, flood alerts on the Derwent, Greta at Keswick looking lively, some minor roads flooded and double rain (250mm) forecast for the next 24 hours.....safe travels if you're out and about...

Newby bridge itself (and the a590) is usually fine- it’s the stretch from newby bridge to Bowness that will a bit swampy atm
Looks like a grim couple of days ahead. We're currently 20 miles south of the dividing point between totally dry and deluge.
Judging by Generalist's pic, it might at least start washing out some of the sanitised trails in Grizedale!
Rats, booked into Keswick camping club site on Saturday in the caravan, waiting for the cancellation call from the site. Have been evacuated from there in the past, not a pleasant experience. Oh well, Norfolk here we come!

Evacuated off the Derwent water club site today. Got told to take awnings down last night. Currently sat up at the Troutbeck site. Very windy and wet but no chance of flooding up here. An otters pocket would have been warmer and more homely these last few days 🥲
Upside is managed blue and red north at Whinlatter with the kids and didn’t drown earlier in the week. Might work Friday now and save days holiday. Sigh.
I live in Cambridge so just a hop over the border for me, have to run the gauntlet through the fens to get there mind you, dangerous country that.😬

Been in the lakes at Keswick all week and it’s basically been constantly raining all week. Think we managed a mostly dry Tuesday but making up for it today. Abandoned our plans today after an attempt to drive to ambleside. The wife and kids wanted to stay in all afternoon so I took the dog for a wet walk via a few pubs in and around Keswick. Ah well, got to make the best out of any situation.
Currently holidaying in Craobh Haven, 20 odd miles south of Oban. Been very wet all week and the A93 has been closed overnight three nights in a row due to landslide risk? Just overnight afaik but Im eyeing up going across Stirling to reach geordieland on friday instead of a93 and Glasgow traffic.

@thegeneralist that bit could be bad by tomorrow, doesn't get closed often for flooding but it happens, as mentioned its the a592 that gets bad from newby bridge. hawkshead to newby bridge will be bad as well.
i would be tempted to go from coniston to the a590 at greenodd but i haven't used that road after a lot of rain, i think there will be a few places that will flood as well.
a590 should be ok
apparently there is a car stuck in the flood at rothay bridge but still passable( at about 9pm)

Some pretty intense flooding in Glasgow last night.
COP26 getting disrupted by extreme weather would be somewhat ironical.
Might make a salient point or two, though.
Manchester is weirdly warm and dry today. In fact, so warm that It seems a bit odd for October really.
Sat in a nice warm cottage in Troutbeck at the moment. The garden is a flowing torrent. Be ideal for some white water canoeing. Drove into Windermere yesterday and the a590 was at a stand still. A couple of wet days ahead but the Landcruiser could earn is crust getting us out ;o)
Mostly annoyed to miss the first Troutbeck pumpkin festival. Looked epicly wet down there.

That's just on the cusp of getting very expensive. A bit of wind, and/or a few inches more water and they'll be off. The stack of kayaks (canoes?) in the middle may already be on the way.
Our holiday in Grange over Sands is a bit of a washout, we've got wet weather gear, but it's still no fun. I'm going downstairs now to suggest to the missis we sack it off and have a day out from home tomorrow. ☹️

We were meant to be heading to Keswick tomorrow for a few days. We’ve had to cancel it due to some pretty horrendous family news, but it doesn’t look like we’ll be missing much other than potentially being flooded out and watching torrential deluges coming in sideways. I’ve done that enough times up there

Was our plan to walk around Derwent Water today. We were here last year and had to bail at Lodore as the level was too high to get around the top. The water level was covering the jetties too. Might need to rethink our walk. Despite the wet weather we’ve had a great time and still managed the walks we planned with only our day off walking yesterday being impacted by the weather. A week of rain is bound to take its toll.
United Utilities have been sending us messages here in Manchester over the past couple of months to save water urgently as the lakes in the Lakes where we get our water from are only at 30% capacity (should be 70% normally this time of year).
Looks like it's our fault, sorry :p
Warm and dry here this week so far, guess all the water saving has caused a backlog in the clouds which have pushed off northwards.

Me too, but seeing some of the images that have come out from base I'm glad I'm not! Report from a friend who'd been out since the start of the week putting controls out was "Marquee was put up on Tue, was totally destroyed last night. Weather was too bad to go out yesterday [Weds] - really heavy rain and wind gusting 60kts on the tops."

Rather annoyingly it went from way too low on Monday to way too high, with hardly anything in between. We spent ages scoping out sections of the Brathay and Rothay, but nothing I'd have been remotely happy taking the kid down
The grade 2 section between Grasmere and Rydal was this amazing himalayan looking section of huge wave trains. It looked OK in a hardshell with a solid group, but no chance whatsoever with our group. I was trying to explain to the kid what happens when kayak meets tree, but he was still disappointed. When I pointed out the unavoidable strainer midway down he just said " let's just do the section above then". Erm, and stop where?
Ah the innocence of youth. Reminds me of when I first got my driving licence and headed up to the orchy with a mate and a rubber dinghy. Luckily Big Rock rapid is the first one you find after turning off the A82, otherwise it could have got exceedingly messy. Even that was exciting enough in spate. Got into the main channel, PLFd and the paddle immediately broke. Such good fun, but thank god Easan Dubh wasn't the rapid we found.
Anyway, like every single other person holidaying in the Lakes today, we're going to try and split today. But first things first.... Loughrigg Terrace.... reckon it won't be too busy 😉

If thats at Grizedale on the official stuff, are they not always like that in the winter? I've been river riding there when they've had very little rain (for the lakes, its all realtive I guess). The trails just aren't designed well/haven't bedded in well for good drainage (which is ironic).

Looks like Cockermouth will be hit hard, Keswick is continuing to get worse. All southern routes closed in the county to barrow, so only way is A66 and M6

Ventured out to get more beer. Found an abandoned taxi in the middle of a B road and a VW pick up thing. All by the same puddle. Cruiser went through easily however they might have tried it in the dark when it was deeper.

Belayed our walk around Derwent water and had a couple of hour stroll up a trail followed by a few pub stops. Perfect afternoon if you ask me.
We're at Bassenthwaite, looking like the rain has finally stopped. Pleased about that because I'm wearing the last dry clothes I have with me.
Chose a bad day to ride across Datrmoor with the wife. Damp.

The B5289 to Keswick is a river in places and the other road is 'just' passable at Portinscale.

We abandoned this morning and left wasdale at 9am after only 1 very wet and windy day of hiking. Adventurous drive out of south Cumbria with lots of flooding
It’s not been to bad today, certainly not at storm Desmond levels, but we are in the same manor.
Hopefully we can get 24hrs of reprieve if not then the water levels could be getting a touch high.
