Ok so i am a bit of a dinosaur when it comes to mobile technology, don't own a smart phone and not relay bothered, laugh if you want. 😳
I would however relay like to use Strava for cycling. Is there any other device, preferably cheap & simple that i could use Strava on?
If anyone had a redundant phone/ device capable of Strava, not bothered what else it did i would be interested.
Cheers
Garmin 200? Used
Any GPS device capable of producing a GPX file will do the job. You might as well get a device which is cycling specific though as it will also double up as a bike computer. As mike mentions, something like a Garmin 200.
Supposedly any device capable of logging gps co-ordinate should be capable of having those uploaded to strava. Phones that can load the app are the easy option but are noted for not the greatest for accuracy*, dedicated devices like the garmin more so.
* more an annoyance.. but I have a couple of strava segments I ride alongside on loops.. strava registers me on those segment (that are easier than the tracks I use) & lists me as bloody slow on the main segment, which is annoying. I've also created a segment on a short sharp climb but my phone totally misses the real height gained.
That all said, I mainly use it to record mileage (not a KOM contenter).. and it does that fine.
Cateye Stealth 10 can be had for about £50. My wife has one and it works adequately, about the cheapest and simplest device we could find at the time.
I've got a garmin 200 for sale if interested, £45 posted 🙂
Yes preferably bike specific so Garmin sounds good. Again excuse my ignorance could i get Strava on a Garmin device? Reason i ask as i have mates on Strava so nice to try and compete against their best times etc.
No, Strava won't be on the unit. After a ride you download the ride GPX file to a PC, logon to the Strava website and upload your GPX file to Strava. This will work just the same as if you had a fancy phone with Strava on it etc. You'll be measured against everyone using Strava including your mates.
Get a Motorola Defy Plus on eBay. I paid just under £30.
They're tougher than normally phones, rain- and shock- proof.
I made a mount for it out of a Edinburgh Bike Coop phone pouch and some sugru - so about £40 all in.
If you are using it for MTB off road then the Garmin edge 200 is not ideal as it uses variable sampling between 1 & 5 seconds and doesn't record fine detail. If the segments are short then you can have start and end times +/-5 seconds and if the track is very twisty sometimes Strava will fail to pick up the segments. You would be much better off using a device that you can specify or has by default a fine sampling rate.
I have and use the garmin edge 200, but now record my rides on my phone and use the garmin as an information source on my bars, such as mileage or route following.
What devices? ThanksYou would be much better off using a device that you can specify or has by default a fine sampling rate.
I would have thought a cheap second hand phone as suggested by Yourguitarhero could be ideal. You could use it without a sim card, install the Strava app to record the rides and upload it via wireless network once you're home again.
Alternatively the next model up of the Garmin, the edge 500 can be set to 1 second sampling rate and is what I would have bought originally if I had known about the limitations of the 200.
I'm sure others can suggest alternative devices, I'm a bit out of the game as I don't look unless I'm buying as I cant stop myself if I do...

It's even simpler than this with a Garmin, connect it to your PC with the cable, go into Strava, press "upload activity" then select the ".fit" file directly from your Garmin device, job done!
I've just picked up a second hand Edge 500, tried it out on the weekend, just pressed start then chucked it in my camelback and pressed stop at the end.
I would grab that Edge 200 offered above and that's all you need!
Seconded - used Garmin 200. Easy to use, simple display. Has everything except an easy to read clock. £45 is a good price. I ought to sell mine at some point, but I am attached to its simplicity for off road use.
Depends if you want to be able to see it while on the bike. If so, the Garmin is probably the winner. If not, a really cheap Defy is going to be cheaper (I got mine for £20) and will upload directly to Strava once connected to wifi.

Sent you email.
Cheap Android phone?
If anyone else wants an edge 200 I also have one to sell, £45 posted.

I don't know, but I'd guess a Garmin is probably a bit more accurate than a cheap phone if thats important.
I just use my normal phone in a sandwich bag for weather protection, has served me well for years.
Actually, I'm not sure that that is the case in the real world. In the past it was but more current phones (which to be fair the Defy may not be) seem just as accurate as my Garmins. The garmin wins for robustness and use on the bike.

He speaks the truth! Same problem here with my 200, the sampling rate is just too slow which results in some odd segment times or some missed entirely. If I knew what I know now, I would have gone for the 500.
Just a point if you're missing segments - if it bothers you, you can use the link below to 'correct' your trace

Thanks guys, sorted now, gone for yorksire89's garmin, all the advice much appreciated.
