Can anyone recommend me a book or course that could take my statistical knowledge from zero to hero? I was fairly clued up back in the day but 26 years of not using it means I need to start again from a really basic level (just looking at the notation now makes my eyes bleed).
The Andy Field book Discovering Statistics Using IBM SPSS Statistics is great if you have access to SPSS, which is expensive. There are a lot of free R based tutorials on the web, but they aren't much use if you aren't familiar with programming in R. Cheaper to buy an SPSS licence than to learn R programming.
General Reading:
David Speigelhalter - The Art of Statistics
Tim Hartford - How to make the world add up
Andy Field - An adventure in Statistics
Charles Wheelan - Naked Statiscs
Text book:
Andy Field book Discovering Statistics Using IBM SPSS Statistics or Using R
Mine Çetinkaya-Rundel et al - OpenIntro Statistics (Digital copy is free https://www.openintro.org/book/os/) In the same series is Modern Statistics and Introductory Statistics with Randomization and Simulation if those float your boat more - these use R and have a supporting Coursera course
Barbara Illowsky et al - Introductory Statistics (Kindle edition currently free, like the series above they have a opensource model for digital versions, https://openstax.org/details/books/introductory-statistics)
Richard McElreath - Statistical Rethinking if you fancy Bayes (supporting lecture series https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WVelCswXo4)
If you are using your own machine then PSPP shares a lot of the features of SPSS

My A level Stats text book was pretty good, loved the subject. Still regularly use stuff from A level stats.

Good stuff thanks. Some of that should get me restarted.
UCLA stats consultancy is consistently superb on all platforms look under resources here https://stats.idre.ucla.edu
SAS on demand is free if you register and don't make money... Industry standard analysis platform that's part of my day job. https://support.sas.com/en/software/ondemand-for-academics-support.html
Can second the recommendations for David Spiegelhalter's and Tim Harford's books for general statsing.
'How to Read Numbers' by David & Tom Chivers is an excellent general read as well.
Great to hear spss is still in use, I last used it 34 years ago. I too enjoyed stats but never used any of the skills after uni.
Loads of stats podcasts, I 'll give them a listen and post back.
for winning arguments on the internet I can recommend

😉
Don’t bother, 96.2% of its all made up anyway.
I like Stinerock’s Statistics with R. As a language it’s easy to learn and well worth it IMO.
I was recommended a book called Statistics without tears which was fairly basic but got me through the relevant parts of my degree.
