Finally stopped taking my Statins couple of weeks ago due to nagging wife and have found that the cramp that I suffered, while riding, has stopped nod to the wife. Has anyone else had problems with Statins and is there an alternative to keeping the pipes clear?

I've been on Rosuvastatin for about 4 years, no problems to mention. Why is your wife anti statins? Just after an early life insurance pay out?

Otherwise I think it is diet, exercise and the "Benecol" type products (they do work to a degree at least).

Look at your relative risk. I would do my damnedest to avoid taking statins. I have high cholesterol but no other risk factors so don't take them. Lots of people get side effects. great for people at risk but vastly overprescribed IMO

If I didn't have "other" factors I'd stop taking mine, I suffer from cramp but also did so pre-statins it's no worse now than it was.

"Rhabdomyolysis often begins as muscle pain and can progress to loss of muscle cells, kidney failure, and death. ..........Since rhabdomyolysis may be fatal, unexplained joint or muscle pain that occurs while taking statins should be brought to the attention of a healthcare provider for evaluation."

I've started to take phytosterol complex from Solar and will have a test in a few months to see if they work I've read good things about them.

Rhabdomyolysis tends to occur all the time, not just whilst exercising ime. Although I suppose a mild case might only make itself known when the muscles are under stress. There's a simple blood test your GP can do to check if it is rhabdo.

Whether you'll benefit from a statin really does depend on your risk factors. If you have a slightly high cholesterol but are otherwise fit and healthy there's a tiny benefit. If you're overweight, diabetic, smoke, have had a heart attack or stroke already, have a high cholesterol etc you'll benefit more.

Based on the current clinical trials covering this area I'd say blood pressure control is the most important aspect of cardiovascular safety. So ride more 🙂
