Slightly light hearted with a hint of snobbery…
We arrived at a Park last night close to Skegness for the kids annual rugby tour. Having endured a 9pm move to a second caravan due to the first being in state of disrepair, I trudged around the swamp like flooded grounds learning that the gas and water needed to be turned on, and still can’t light the little boiler for hot water.
Having woken up cold due to a limit of 1 electric convector and a gas fire that puts out less heat than a box of matches, Mrs K is close to investigating the nearest hotel.
Any tips for turned this around to a liveable standard for people used to the standards of the glorious south east 😉 would be appreciated…
Well, may I ask what you were expecting to experience from a static caravan at Skeggy? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? The Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically across the dunes?
I lived in a static caravan for 3 years with no mains power or even running water over the winter when I was young and just starting off living away from home. Lots of jumpers and getting used to being cold and damp helps 😄
Leave the gas fire on. Get the oven on, door closed until it really heats up then open the door and let the warm, moist air flood the van.
Use the convector in the hall/bedroom if poss and keep the doors closed so the gas is only heating as little as poss.
Tbh it sounds like an old, poor quality, van.
Good luck!
Sounds luxurious compared to many of the student houses I lived in! If you can’t see your breath in the morning as you huddle under 2 duvets it’s not cold.
Presume the gas is from bottles? Might be low hence low fire output.
An electrician mate of mine went to change some sockets in one a few weeks ago, it was 1deg inside.
Good tips thanks. I turned the big grey rotary dial across bottles and closed off the bottle not used (assuming this is what the dial does) no change to the fire output.
But huzzah, the boiler is working. I can’t see the Pilot but it fires up when the water is running, so with the Flame dial on Max showers are now a thing. The convector is indeed in the hall with the bathroom door open to help warm it.
It’s a bit odd, clearly this van is owned and rented off season, it’s like an old peoples house and last night felt very odd, like sleeping in your parents bed 😳

Well, the last two years in Norfolk and West Sussex were luxury compared to this. Last night the main “Club Tropicana” area was a din of noise, full of unruly kids and pit bull dogs, all topped off with a decor of plastic palm trees.

The classy part of skeg then*
Most of my childhood was holidaying in caravans in ingoldmells as it was cheaper.

This is just bloody weird. What sort of arse sleeps with the heating on?
The problem is the duvet, not the heating. And don't even think of trying to blame that on the establishment 🙂
You're in skegvegas so...under no circumstances should you mention brexit or migrants.
If you hear adults addressing children - their own or others - as ****g aholes, don't be concerned; it's a local term of endearment.
What makes you think any of the local hotels would be an improvement on your static van?
Enjoy!
You’ve not had the full Skegvegas experience till you’ve been cleaned up by a blinged up mobility scooter!!!
If you get time out though pop up to Anderby Creek or down to Gibraltar Point. There are nice places on that coast.

Funny you you should say that, Mrs K got her toes run over by one yesterday.
Anyway, we are home now and thawing out. Although we have a pretty humble home by SE standards, its reached a whole new level of appreciation overnight 😀
I am however going to shout out Skegness RFC who hosted an amazing youth level Rugby Tournament at their club which was - the sheer brutality of U14 Rugby x 5 matches in one weekend aside - enjoyed very much by the kids especially after the guest at the presentations turned out to be Tom Curry, what a treat for them.
