Looks like I’m going to need a website but have no clue how to start one. Most guidance I can find has commercial or software tie ins. What’s the best way to register an address and set up some simple picture/ text content and information as cheaply as possible using a free and open source set up?

Any advice/ starting points would be great.

Wix is easy and free if you are not too fussed about domain names.

Here are two knocked up in an hour or so using standard templates

Wordpress is pretty simple to pick up. Lots of templates available that look pro and all you have to do is edit the content. Look at 1nd1 Ionos as a host, that have been great in the last couple of years I have been using them.

alternatively try to code - it's fun once you get into it https://www.w3schools.com/html/

you can then just buy hosting and a webdomain name

You need to clean up the SLK's (what I assume is) rocker/cam cover and powder-coat it. I know these things as I watch Wheeler Dealers and that will "perk up the engine no end" 🙂

Wordpress.com do a free version which can be Upgraded to paid for later.
I would buy your domain from 123 reg or similar and keep it separate from the hosting.

Some good info on here:

https://www.harriethead.co.uk

There's a link there to free document about pros and cons of different platforms (Squarespace recommended).

Free and Simple aren't completely mutually exclusive but they are a bit.  Wordpress is fine to get going but a few years later when you have missed some updates and that extra module you bolted on no longer works you might regret it.  If you are happy getting your hands dirty then it works just fine

'Managed Wordpress' where someone else looks after the updating is nice but you pay for it

Wix is a very nice option as is Squarespace.  They both stay up to date by themselves.  I think wix might even have a free plan as long as you want a .wix domain name.  I don't use it so I'm not 100% sure

Of the 'drag and drop' type options I think I prefer Squarespace.

for ref. I use Drupal at work but that way insanity lies

Or maybe someone could ask you the first appropriate question... does it need to look professional, be search engine friendly and or have a reliable contact form?

Theres 1000 ways to skin a cat and 997 of shit ways. Go with squarespace if you dont care about SEO and want the cheapest most professional looking site.. avoid wix like the plague.

If the size of the site will grow to something you'd depend on more for finding customers then find a real web designer to do it for you.

.. just make sure it isn't one of those bullshit ones.  Good luck, I'd rather find an honest mechanic.
