My partner has been involved in youth work and teaching all though her adult life. She would like to start a organisation that offers skill, training and activities to young people. Some things might be boring soft skills like interview techniques but can help a young person, others some fun activities like maybe a water sports trip etc, I might even run some short programming course if there is an interest. She doesn't want it to be a youth club as she wants it to have greater structure and potential for learning but still offer lots of the activities. I think it's a branding thing in her (now teachers) eyes.
She is all up on the CRB requirements heath and safety but no idea but a the finance side. What she is not sure about is the finical side of things. She have had some initial interest of and offers of donations an the potential of a the use of a small building. Parents would have to pay to cover most running costs with a weekly subscription. I guess she should set up a Ltd company to protect herself / create some sort of separation? Longer term if viable she would like to take a wage of some sort if it takes off but profits would be reinvested in to more equipment with any luck.
Sounds like a great Scout group to be honest, which is very much to be applauded, although you don't' get paid to be a leader in that.
Scouts. I don't get paid though and subs brings in £60 a week tops that we have to use to cover costs.
I think she is hoping to be able to run it full time in summer holidays maybe some other holidays too.
Might key in well with revision sessions for the GCSE years too.
I know it's not a youth club but all the youth clubs she worked at she was paid. Plus she would have to cut down her hours at work to cope.
Intent is laudable, but yeah, she's basically had an idea for the Scout Association.
Ok so people think this is in competing with the scouts. It's not I am probably not explaining all her idea properly (it's not my idea after all).
The question though it about the finance side. How does that work?
Not dismissing the idea, but your local Scout and Guide groups would love someone keen to help deliver this sort of thing. The finance/procedural/safeguarding barriers to setting it up separately are a ballsache.
Sounds like the post-year 11 thing my son did. You could contact them, ask how heir financing works -

As I stated above I have obviously miss explained her idea it's not like scouts the question was to do with the legal structure of the finance. Not if it is like the scouts.
Thanks See DezB I will get her to take a look.
I'm guessing it either has to be run as some form of a business or a charity. Either way, I'm assuming there needs to be proper accounting and auditing of income and outgoings, has to be a proper bank account, two signatories etc. Seems to be how our Scouts, Guides and cycle club seem to operate.
Do you know any accountants to see what they can suggest? Must be some on here somewhere.
