You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
So, my 6yo lad is really into star wars through lego sets and books.
I thought about buying the boxed set of the first (last?) three, Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford etc.
However, from the reviews on amazon, it seems to suggest they are tampered with, excessive CGI etc and geenrally spolied.
I taped return of the jedi over xmas and presume this is an original but I think it would be easier to introduce him to the films in the right order, or perhaps not with the first three (last three-phantom menace etc) out.
It's very confusing for a non-fan...
Watch IV then V so you get the Darth/Luke reveal. Then watch II and III as the backstory to Darth. Then VI to wrap it up.
Phantom menace isn't needed for the story. You can safely pretend it doesn't exist.
If you have to ask
........Don't bother.
meh, the tampering isnt that massive
some shinier x-wings
jabba apears sooner
greedo fires first,
hayden cristiansens ghost
what he said
Kids seem to prefer the first three [ better special effets and CGI battles] but the order above is the only one that makes sense for the big reveal of Darth.
The first one of the new ones is dire
lol at beej but that's pretty much it.
Watch the old ones, CGI rendered or not with Harrison ford and gold bikini's, certainly the first two of that.
then watch the new three with the scottish bloke and samual L jackson. Then the last one.
The cronological order is though, the latest three, then the first three but doing that will leave you disappointed. The first two of the first three give you some understanding of luke, darth and all the relationships going on.
Films aside, my son (Now 10) and I really like The Clone Wars. IMO really well made and good for both kids and adults...we have 4 seasons now on DVD and they are good to go back to and re-watch. Son also likes the fact that they do the Clone Wars in Lego.
Does no-one read the OPs any more?
The newer versions have been cleaned up a number of times, with various scenes tweaked, added and so on. The Internet is awash with angry nerds but to be honest, it really doesn't matter a great deal in the grand scheme of things (and probably even less to a six year old). If you really want the original theatrical releases you'll no doubt pay a large amount of money (a quick google would suggest the 2008 DVD with old and new versions on is going for three-figure prices). If you're not a fanboy, and your lad is 6, I'd say you're better off with a remastered copy of a 35 year old film.
As for the prequel trilogy; I'd be tempted just to watch the lot in broadcast order. So, 4-5-6, 1-2-3.
Google "machete order star wars"
I'm not too bothered by the CGI 'improvements'. I quite like all the extra creatures running around. Apart from the stupid bits like Jabba in IV.
As for viewing order, as Beej suggested above, 'machete' is the way to go. Never let your child have to see Ja Ja Binks.
Do the machete order using the despecialised versions of the original trilogy
Do the machete order using the despecialised versions of the original trilogy
I was going to suggest the same - Harmy's Despecialized Editions are superb, an epic amount of work to get the best picture quality but keeping it as true to the original releases as possible.

A few friends have kids at "first watch of star wars" age and have done the machete order, they thought it worked very well indeed.
What's the point in removing all the stupid special edition stuff?
If you removed all the really stupid stuff from all the films you wouldn't be left with much. A political thriller maybe.

"Only" £45 on amazon marketplace
Get the box set, on the bonus disc there is the undoctored, original aspect ratio films.
Use the 'special edition' discs as coasters.
