How exactly have you dealt with this in the past. We work in an small open plan office with 8 staff and 2 of them (not me) suffer appalling BO and all the other staff are complaining. How have other office managers dealt with this rather delicate but foul smelling situation ?
You just need to be honest, it's gonna be awful but if it was you wouldn't you want to know?
You're the manager?
Honest calm just make out only you have noticed and want to head it off before others do
Yes manager but not the boss
Leave cans of deodorant on their desks
Tell them loudly that they stink in team meetings
Retch into a bin every time they walk past
Start a rumour that one of them is bringing fleas into the office
Jeez, can you really not do this for yourself?
Hopefully not like an old boss of mine, after a few complaints about a colleague.
He strode in the office and loudly proclaimed
"Oi ****, * off home and have a shower. She says you ****ing stink"
Do you "manage" the individual concerned though?
Ever wondered why managers get paid extra? 😆
Just take the person aside and have a quiet word with them. You could maybe make it subtle by asking if they've recently changed diet or something.
Secret Santa. Bar of soap and a can of deodorant. If they ask why they got a Xmas present in March tell them it's because they stink.
Yossa i can and probably would attack it with that sort of subtleness was looking for a more softer approach
If of any use there was a similar post here
Quiet word, don't say anyone else has noticed.
If this fails spray deodorant at them whenever they get close to you and encourage others to do the same.
When much younger, and in my first supervisory role, I faced a similar dilemma with complaints against a rather unhygienic female member of staff. Her idea of cleanliness was a quick squirt of cheap perfume. She was rank!! After talking things through with our HR dept. I passed the responsibility on to a combination of the works Nurse and my Foreman. To be honest the issue never really got resolved, but we all breathed a (much fresher) collective sigh of relief when some dope got her pregnant and she left.
We've got a manager who pongs a bit but he's an ex Royal Marine so nobody dare say owt.
Had one of those in the (open plan) office a few years ago. That's what managers are paid to deal with. It's actually not as embarrassing as you expect (no, I was neither party in the discussion).
Set them on fire. Fire purifies everything, they'll thank you.
We've got a 'stinker' at work. Despite everyone noticing it, customer complaints and multiple words from the manager they still stink. Doesn't help that we have to share equipment with them, you can smell the stench and feel the stickiness from a few feet away!! HR say there's nothing they can do despite it being an issue for years!! Has a medical cause apparently. Nothing to do with the fact that they eat crap all day, are massively overweight and don't know what a washing machine or bath are for 🙄
I love that poster!
We had a lad that had terrible BO, we work hard and he does too, we mentioned it quietly to him, so as to embarrass him as little as possible, he appologised and makes sure he has some deodorant with him now. he asked how long this has been an issue and was more upset that nobody had mentioned it before
The chances are they don't realise and may not be down to poor hygiene, and will probably be embarrassed but thankful.
Done this. Approached it from the point of view of "are there any obstacles at home to prevent you from showering daily and washing clothes regularly? Because there seems to be a problem...."
Might have been seen as patronising but let's be honest, how many of us would need to be told?!
As I said plumslikerocks people with BO don't tend to notice, especially if they start the day smelling Ok. Be very careful with approaching this subject and doing it privately is defiantly better it may be medical there maybe a outside reason for it that could be delicate or they may just be scruffy.
I have come home from working and my missus has made comments and I Havant noticed,i work hard and spend a lot of time doing manual work, but i shower before work and after, I take care of my appearance but sometimes just cant help it.
Just spray them with the Red fire extinguisher then the black one to kill the flees
Drag them outside and shoot them, clearly if they cant manage a shower in the morning then they cant do their work to a reasonable standard either.
Issue clothes pegs to everyone ?
It's usually their clothes holding onto the sweat bacteria. My ex used to run a travel agents and one of the staff was rather whiffy.
She just had a nice chat with him about wearing clean shirts and general hygiene. I don't think I would have been very good at that.
